Charities

We work with charities to improve the lives of people in local communities all over the world.
UK
UK colleagues vote for a Charity of the Year, which is local and educational, and is usually supported for a two year period. Our current charity is Romsey Mill, which works to overcome disadvantage and promote social inclusion for young people, children and families. In the first year a combination of corporate support and colleague fundraising amounted to £30,000. In addition, the charity receives in-kind support such as volunteer time, use of premises and book donations.

UK colleagues are encouraged to sign up to ‘Give As You Earn’. In the financial year 2011 to 2012, contributions amounted to almost £14,000.
Brazil
Food for Thought has helped combat hunger since 2003. Attendees at free Press events are invited to bring one kilogram of non-perishable food, which is donated to a local charity. To date the Press has donated 27,599 kilograms of food to 70 charities.
India
We work with the non-governmental organisation Pratham to improve access to learning for very poor children. The Pratham project is reaching thousands of children already and, as one of its main objectives is to help improve English learning, we are well-placed to assist. It is estimated that eventually 200,000 poor children will benefit from this project.
Blind and visually impaired people get digital access to Press books through a partnership between the Press and the Daisy Forum (Digitally Accessible Information System) of India. The Forum produces and maintains a library of digital talking books, braille and e-text books.
South Africa
The Cambridge Journals group partnered with Educational Support Initiative for Africa to help bring our products to university libraries across Africa. Journals colleagues have worked with ESIfA from its inception, donating over 4,000 copies of our scientific and learned journals.
South African colleagues have raised funds since 2010 for the educational charity The Shine Centre in the annual Paddle to Read Dragon Boat Race.

Spain
The Iberian branch signed a collaboration agreement with ONCE, the Spanish national association for the visually impaired, to provide free adaptation of over 10,000 Press titles into accessible forms.
Thailand
Colleagues have visited the Pakkred Babies' Home, which provides nursery care and child development services for abandoned children. They took contributions from colleagues and family members for essentials needed and the office matched the contribution and donated 3,500 Baht towards lunch for all 300 children on the day of the visit.
