MRS Bulletin celebrates its 40th year with special issue on the unique relationship between Materials and Engineering
“Materials and engineering are soulmates.” Thus opens the December 2015 issue of MRS Bulletin, in celebration of its 40-year milestone with a special edition on Materials & Engineering: Propelling Innovation. The primary goal of the issue is to capture the unique relationship between materials science and engineering applications, two disciplines that are closely intertwined. This relationship continues to grow with expanding social demand for new products and processes.
The special edition, with 20 articles, is guest edited by V.S. Arunachalam, Dipankar Banerjee, Y.T. Cheng and James Williams. It covers all classes of materials and the entire materials cycle in a variety of applications.
The broad range of topics in this issue includes mature as well as emerging materials applications. From concrete—the most used material on Earth (other than water!)—to 3D printing of artificial organs, the articles spell out the challenges of this complex relationship to further propel innovation. For instance, in aerospace, materials advances and the introduction of 3D printing (additive manufacturing) in commercial aircraft have “shrunk” the world. Yet, now, the further application of this disruptive technology into other areas of industry requires research. The issue then peeks 50 years into the future with an article by Mark Miodownik, who asks, “Will our 10,000-year-old track record of materials innovation come to an end as we run out of new materials to invent?”
Paul Drzaic, Chair of the MRS Bulletin Editorial Board, says, “I like the definition of engineering as turning materials into useful things and processes. Engineering is really dependent on materials, and engineering and new technologies enable the discovery and analysis of new materials.”
Y.T. Cheng, a co-guest editor of this issue, expands on this, “Without materials, we wouldn’t have any products, but without engineering, we couldn’t make any products that are reliable, low cost, and that serve society’s needs.”
The special MRS Bulletin issue will stimulate dialogue and interactions between engineers and materials researchers. Due to the unique nature of this issue, it is expected to garner significant attention from the materials community, both in academia and industry. Distribution will be wider than normal, targeting business leaders and the public at large, as well as materials scientists and engineers. Due to the anticipated high demand for this issue, six months complimentary online access will be available to all until June 30, 2016 at journals.cambridge.org/MRSBulletin2015.
