Cambridge helps address challenges for teachers with new editions
International publisher Cambridge University Press has launched two new editions of The Cambridge Teacher Series portfolio, which focus on the latest thinking on the hot topic of continuing professional development and education for teachers.
Teachers Learning: Professional Development and Education, edited by Colleen McLaughlin and Teacher Education and Pedagogy: Theory, Policy and Practice, edited by Dr Michael Evans are both evidence-based books examining important questions around who determines knowledge and what makes effective education for teachers.
Speaking at the launch in the Cambridge University Press Bookshop in Cambridge, the oldest bookshop site in the UK, Colleen McLaughlin said that government policy had ‘radically’ changed over the last seven months.
She said: ‘The Schools White Paper: The Importance of Teaching says all the evidence from different education systems around the world shows that the most important factor in determining how well children do is the quality of teachers and teaching.’
Dr Michael Evans said: ‘Teachers’ education is under siege; people are questioning if teachers even need to be trained and qualified before they start, let alone what that training should look like. It’s a massive issue at the moment.’
He said that the Cambridge approach to teacher education was based on a partnership tradition – linking the Faculty of Education and university staff at the University of Cambridge with schools, which over decades had built up trust.
Teachers Learning: Professional Development and Education presents evidence about the teachers’ roles and profession, knowledge and knowledge creation and the crucial importance and effectiveness of teachers' learning, benefitting pupils and classroom learning.
Teacher Education and Pedagogy: Theory, Policy and Practice provides analysis of effective practice and presents an alternative insight into initial teacher education.
The new editions of The Cambridge Teacher Series are now available, priced from £50 each.
