Prince of Wales helps launch 2013 writing competition
Cambridge University Press and the Royal Commonwealth Society launch the 2013 Commonwealth Essay Competition.
The Prince of Wales recently launched the competition in Cambridge at a creative workshop for school students from across the UK, with the theme ‘Opportunity through Enterprise’.
The students were asked to explore issues of employment and employability in the Commonwealth, and their recommendations for tackling youth unemployment were presented to the Prince at the end of the day.
The essay competition has been run by the Royal Commonwealth Society since 1883 and it is the world’s oldest and largest international writing competition for schools.
It encourages, develops and celebrates the creative talents of young people and provides a platform for them to compete with other students in each of the 54 nations that make up the Commonwealth.
Entries can come in the form of a poem, letter, article, story, essay or even a short play.
The competition is free to enter and is open to nationals or residents of all Commonwealth countries and territories under the age of 18. The closing date is 1 May 2013, with the results announced this autumn.
