Library Edition
The New English Bible, completed in 1970, was a translation undertaken by the major Protestant churches of the British Isles. Scholars translated from the best Hebrew and Greek texts, aiming to present the full meaning of the original in clear and natural modern English. This approach marked a departure from the prevailing Bible translation philosophy and the new version proved to be tremendously popular - several million copies were sold, many of them to schools and churches.
To this day the NEB has a significant place in the history of the Bible in English, and it is therefore now reissued in the Cambridge digital reprint programme for classic and previously out-of-print books. The NEB Library Edition has a distinctive text design: single-column format, with the text arranged in paragraphs and with verse numbers in the margins leaving the text free. These innovative features made it read like an ordinary book.
Unlike other Cambridge Bibles on this site, which have sewn bindings, these reissues are 'perfect-bound' as conventional paperbacks and they are printed on standard book paper, not as thin as Bible or India paper. The books are therefore bulkier, so the Old Testament runs to two volumes.
