L'érudition américaine n'a pas connu un black mit total comme celui qui est descendu sur l'Europe — tout au plus un semi-obscurcissement (dim. ont). On dit couramment que les Américains ne réduisirent que peu leur production et leur consommation civiles, tout en accroissant puissamment leur demande et leurs fournitures de guerre. Vrai de l'économie en général, ceci l'est aussi de la vie universitaire. Jusqu'à Pearl Harbour et à l'entrée officielle du pays dans le conflit, il n'y eut qu'une faible saignée de jeunes maîtres et d'étudiants, diplômés ou non, au profit de l'armée et du gouvernement. Puis les vides se multiplièrent dans les sections de nos Universités, celles des sciences économiques, historiques et politiques comme celles des sciences physiques. Un personnel enseignant réduit eut à faire face à une grande affluence de jeunes gens sous l'uniforme : «détachés » des services ordinaires de l'armée et de la marine, spécialistes ayant besoin de connaissances techniques, groupes à exercer dans les langues habituellement peu enseignées en Amérique, ou des matières indispensables au personnel d-un gouvernement militaire ou de services d'occupation.
