The Sphinx Crest in the Ribchester Hoard

Abstract

A review of the account of the discovery of the Ribchester hoard in 1796 leads to the conclusion that the figure forming a crest was a sphinx but that it was unlikely to have been attached to the helmet in the hoard. The hoard is therefore likely to have been composed of material for reuse.

Résumé

Une étude du compte-rendu de la découverte du trésor de Ribchester, en 1796, incite à conclure que la silhouette qui forme une crête était un sphinx, mais qu'il y a peu de chances qu'il ait été fixé au casque dans le trésor. Ce trésor doit donc avoir été composé de matériel destiné à être réutilisé.

Zusammenfassung

Eine Prüfung des Berichts über die Entdeckung des Ribchester-Hortfunds von 1796 führt zu dem Schluss, dass die Helmzier in Form einer Sphinx gestaltet war, dass sie aber kaum am Helm im Hort befestigt war. Daher ist anzunehmen, dass das Material im Hortfund für die Wiederverwendung bestimmt war.
