¹ Mr. Rosenberg obviously did not write with my interests and questions in mind, and I am not criticizing him for failing to do what he had no intention of doing. But the very excellence and richness of his study makes it a good starting point for raising some questions of comparative analysis and discussion, and in so doing I may point to gaps or inadequacies which in no way detract from the book's real merits.
