Introduction. Detarium senegalense J.F. Gmel is a forest tree found in Senegal whose fruits are locally called ditax in Wolof. It is eaten fresh but it is widely used as nectar, which is one of the most popular beverages in Senegal. However, the chemical characterization of ditax pulp remains incomplete. This paper describes the volatile compounds of ditax to assess its organoleptic qualities. Materials and methods. Free volatile compounds of fresh ditax pulp were isolated by solvent-assisted flavor evaporation and analysis by GC-MS. Results and discussion. Among the 53 compounds tentatively identified, 49 are reported for the first time in this fruit. In total, 17 aldehydes, 11 aliphatic alcohols, 1 terpene alcohol, 7 free fatty acids, 3 unsaturated hydrocarbons, 1 terpene hydrocarbon, 7 sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, 1 phenol, 2 ketones, 2 esters and 1 organic acid compound were tentatively identified in ditax fresh pulp. The main volatiles identified in fresh ditax pulp were trans, cis-2,6-nonadienal (2.47 mg×kg–1), cis-2-heptenal (1.93 mg×kg–1), trans-a-bergamotene (1.11 mg×kg–1), bicyclo [2,2,0] hexane-1-carboxaldehyde (0.80 mg×kg–1), butyl octadecanoate (0.55 mg×kg–1) and trans-2-nonenal (0.47 mg×kg–1 fresh pulp). Conclusion. Among the volatile compounds identified, aldehyde compounds were widely predominant. To assess the aromatic qualities of ditax pulp, the primary impact aromas should be determined by identifying the aroma-active compounds by GC-olfactometry.

Introduction. The invasive gall midge, Procontarinia mangiferae (= Erosomyia mangiferae Felt), is one of the most important flowering pests of mango orchards worldwide. To achieve chemical input reduction, developing integrated pest management (IPM) strategies using bio-control agents is pertinent. Materials and methods. We tested the pathogenicity of two commercial strains of the entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria on non-diapausing 3rd-instar larvae of P. mangiferae. Results and discussion. Neither the Beauveria sp. commercial strain Betel nor the B. bassiana strain Bb 147 were effective, even though they proved their pathogenicity on the control, Galleria mellonella. Hypotheses to explain the inefficiency of the two strains on P. mangiferae are discussed. Conclusion. Other strains of Beauveria or other entomopathogenic fungi or nematodes should be tested on diapausing and non-diapausing larvae of P. mangiferae.

 Introduction. Our investigation aimed to examine the influence of eco-friendly edible coatings composed of sodium alginate, olive oil and green tea extract (GTE) on improving the shelf life and nutritional quality of carambola (A. carambola L.). Materials and methods. The combinations and concentrations of composite coatings tested were (2% sodium alginate + 0.1% olive oil) (T1), (2% sodium alginate + 0.2% olive oil) (T2) and (2% sodium alginate + 0.1% olive oil + 0.25% GTE) (T3), while the untreated fruit served as control (T4) and were stored at (25 ± 5) °C and (65 ± 5)% RH. All the stored fruit were subjected to physico-chemical and biochemical analysis at regular intervals of 4 days up to 16 days of their storage period. Results and discussion. Weight loss and decay occurrence were least in the fruit treated with T1 and T2 as compared with those of T3 and uncoated fruit (T4). The contents of total soluble solids, total sugars and changes in pigments were found to be least in fruit treated with T1 followed by those treated with T2 and T3. The addition of GTE (T3) to treated fruit during the storage helped enhance the antioxidants such as total phenols and ascorbic acid. Conclusion. The composite edible coatings tested in our study enhanced the shelf life of coated carambola fruit, i.e., thirteen days for T1, sixteen days for T2, fourteen days for T3 and twelve days for control or untreated fruit (T4); the nutritional quality of carambola was enhanced with the treatment of edible coating containing GTE.

Introduction. Losses in West African commercial mango orchards due to fruit fly infestations have exceeded 50% by the middle of the crop season since 2005, resulting in considerable income loss for the growers. Materials and methods. In 2009, weekly monitoring of adult fruit fly species of economic significance was carried out in eight West African countries at 12 sites across five agro-ecological zones: (i) Humid Forest, (ii) Guinean savanna, (iii) Southern Sudan, (iv) Northern Sudan, and (v) Sahelian. Trapping was performed using methyl eugenol and terpinyl acetate in 288 Tephri-traps, targeting Bactrocera invadens and Ceratitis cosyra. Results. The data showed that B. invadens was present throughout the year in the Forest zone, abundant for 7 months, with a peak in May at the end of the mango season, C. cosyra being totally absent. In the Guinean savanna zone, B. invadens was abundant for 6-7 months, with a peak at the beginning of June coinciding with the season, with a few C. cosyra. In the Southern Sudan zone, B. invadens was abundant for 6 months, with a peak in mid-June during the season, C. cosyra peaking in April. In the Northern Sudan zone, B. invadens was abundant for 5 months, with a peak at the end of June at the end of the season, C. cosyra peaking in May. In the Sahelian zone, B. invadens was abundant for 4 months, peaking in August during the season, C. cosyra peaking just before. These preliminary results showed that the exotic species, B. invadens, was present at high levels [mean peak of 378 flies per trap per day (FTD)] in all agro-ecological zones, while the native species, C. cosyra, preferred the drier zones of West Africa, with lower population levels (mean peak of 77 FTD). Conclusion. Detection trapping of male flies with parapheromones is a useful indicator of field population levels and could be used to deploy control measures (IPM package) in a timely manner when the Economic Injury Level is reached. Control strategies for these quarantine mango fruit fly species are discussed with respect to agro-ecological zones and the phenological stages of the mango tree.

Introduction. Kinnow is an important citrus crop grown in India, which suffers from several postharvest diseases during storage. Hence, an attempt was made to combat such diseases with the botanicals Aloe vera, Eucalyptus and Ocimum on Kinnow mandarin to prolong its availability for a longer time. Materials and methods. For this, in vitro and in vivo studies were conducted. The poisoned food technique was used for in vitro studies, and, for in vivo studies, Kinnow fruit were pre-inoculated with pathogens (Penicillium digitatum and P. italicum), treated with different botanicals, then stored at (5 ± 1) °C temperature and 85–90% RH. Results and discussion. Our results indicated that all botanicals inhibited the growth (colony diameter) of both pathogens over untreated PDA plates, but the inhibition was the strongest by Aloe vera extracts. Similarly, under in vivo conditions, all botanicals influenced the decay incidence, decay loss, lesion diameter, respiration rate, ethylene evolution and physiological loss in weight, but Aloe vera was the most effective. All the botanicals were able to retain postharvest quality of Kinnow fruits without any adverse effect on quality parameters such as TSS, TA and ascorbic acid. Under in vivo conditions, the incidence of Penicillium italicum was higher than P. digitatum; however, it was the reverse under in vitro conditions. Conclusion. Thus, it is evident from our studies that botanicals have the potential to control green and blue mold without causing any injury or harmful effects on Kinnow mandarin; botanicals can be recommended as a safe method for extending its storage life while maintaining fruit quality at the same time.

Introduction. Strawberry is basically a temperate fruit, but, due to its short production cycle (100–120 days), it has now become the fastest growing crop in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the Asian nations. In India, farmers of northern plain regions transplant the strawberries before the onset of the winter and keep on harvesting until early summer. Not much is known about the impact of the harvesting season (winter and summer) on the accumulation of health-promoting substances or on quality traits. Considering the existing research gaps and practical utility, the present study was undertaken. Materials and methods. Four varieties were grown on raised beds with black polythene mulch, and a drip and fertigation system. Fruits were harvested at the ¾ colour (scarlet) development stage and observations were recorded on different physiological and functional attributes consecutively during three harvesting months. Results and discussion. Our results indicated that both cultivars and harvesting months affected the physiology and functional quality of strawberry fruit. Anthocyanin, ascorbic acid and total antioxidants were found to be higher during March. Ascorbic acid content registered ≈ 50% reduction during advance summer harvesting (April). Among the tested varieties, Camarosa gave better results during all three harvesting months in terms of desirable quality traits. Conclusion. Our findings show that there are some varieties such as Camarosa which have the potential to produce functionally superior fruits over other cultivars even during early summer. The information presented may be helpful in selection of suitable cultivars, and postharvest handling and processing measures for strawberry fruits harvested during different months.

Introduction. Innovation in the management of perishability/freshness is an essential theme of the future fruit sector, not only for commercial and distribution systems but also for production. Plastic films with modified atmospheres represent a postharvest technology that can be used to store stone fruits, such as apricots, that have a short shelf life when maintained in a normal atmosphere under cold conditions. The aim of our work was to evaluate the effect of several packaging materials on the postharvest quality of apricot fruits stored for 21 days by considering the most important qualitative traits. Materials and methods. Modified atmosphere technology with different packaging materials was used to store apricot fruits cv. Tom Cot® at (+1 ± 0.5) °C and 90–95% relative humidity (RH). Different passive modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) conditions were developed because of the interaction between fruit respiration and the different oxygen and carbon dioxide barriers of the films. The effects of MAP were evaluated on the postharvest quality of the fruits by monitoring the headspace gas composition, weight loss, fruit flesh firmness (FFF), total soluble solids content (TSS), titratable acidity (TA) and skin colour. Results and discussion. Changes in packaging headspace gas composition were observed for all films used, but only multilayer films and biodegradable film maintained the MAP conditions until the end of storage. Wrapped fruits lost less weight than fruits maintained under normal conditions; in particular, multilayer films maintained the highest FFF values after 21 days. The biodegradable film exhibited good performance in terms of maintaining the CO2 and O2 equilibrium inside the baskets by balancing the fruits’ respiration and the film’s permeability. Traditional plastic materials, such as multilayer films, and more sustainable films, such as the biodegradable film used in our study, can be successfully employed to store apricot fruits cv. Tom Cot® for up to 21 days in passive MAP conditions.
