Introduction. Banana is a worldwide important fruit crop, and improved clones which are resistant/tolerant to different biotic and abiotic stresses are very much required. In this regard, prospects of in vitro mutagenesis are high and relevant. Materials and methods. The in vitro cultures (individual and multiple shoots) and in vivo plant materials (suckers and hardened plants) of banana cv. Basrai (AAA) were exposed to 60Co gamma ray doses ranging from 0-100 Gy. Radio-sensitivity of suckers and in vitro individual shoots was assessed by recording data on survival, multiplication ratio, days to root initiation, root number, root length, shoot length, plant height, number of leaves, leaf area and chlorophyll content. Results. Increase in the dose of gamma-rays resulted in corresponding decrease in the growth of the explants. Further, as a trend, the in vivo explants were observed to be more vulnerable than the in vitro ones. This offers possibilities of obtaining live plant materials even at high doses thereby increasing the probability of higher frequency of mutations. Lower doses of 10 and 20 Gy had an enhancing effect on the multiplication ratio of in vitro multiple shoot cultures. Conclusion. The in vivo and in vitro plant materials exhibited differential response to gamma-irradiation. The results obtained from the present studies will be useful in refining strategies for in vitro mutation induction aimed at banana improvement.

Introduction. Although several pineapple micropropagation protocols have already been published, significant improvement could be achieved if the stages of the in vitro culture were better defined. Our work concerned several experiments aiming at the mass production of high quality plantlets. Materials and methods. Axillary buds were inoculated on an MS liquid culture medium added with NAA (2 μM) and BAP (4 μM). Regenerated shoots, divided into three classes of different sizes, were then used in further experiments. First, these shoots were inoculated in flasks containing the same MS culture medium with or without growth regulators. Then, four basic media, containing different salts and free from growth regulators were tested. In a third assay, the MS culture medium was compared with a half-diluted MS culture medium for studying the plantlet elongation and rooting stage. Results. In the MS culture medium supplemented with NAA and BAP, the highest multiplication rate (13.5 shoots) was obtained with the smallest shoots inoculated, while in the MS culture medium free of growth regulators, the highest plantlets (7.7 cm) were the result of the highest shoots inoculated and showed no vitrification. The normal MS culture medium, in comparison with the half-diluted one and the three other salt formulations, revealed a significant increase in the plantlet elongation and best general features. For acclimatization, the highest values of the survival rate (93.8% ) and fresh and dry weights were obtained with the transference of higher than 7.0 cm in vitro plantlets. Conclusion. Using the protocol described in this work, it is possible to obtain 1 million in vitro plantlets after 9 months from a single bud, with a 45 day subculture interval and an average multiplication rate of 10 shoots per bud.

Introduction. Biennial bearing and malformation are the two present problems of mango which are threatening the very existence of a global mango industry in India. Many factors are closely associated with these problems but, presently, those really responsible are not known exactly. Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) plays vital roles in higher plants and, hence, its activity was measured in swollen buds at panicle initiation in regular and biennial bearing mango cultivars to establish a relation between the PPO activity and the flowering behaviour or the malformation incidence. Materials and methods. Six regular (Sensation, Eldon, Tommy Atkins, Amrapali, Neelum and Bangalora) and six biennial bearing cultivars (Langra, Chausa, Edward, St. Alexandrina, Extrema and Bombay Green) were studied. PPO activity was measured in fully swollen buds by preparing a crude enzyme extract at 4 °C. Catecholase activity was measured by using 4-methyl catechol (4-MC) as the substrate, while 4-methyl phenol (p-cresol) was used for cresolase. Results and discussion. Both catecholase and cresolase activities were higher in the swollen buds in the year 2000 than in 1999. Regular bearers exhibited low PPO activity and showed the higher incidence of malformation as compared to the biennial bearing cultivars.Whatever their type of production, cultivars exhibited significant variations in PPO activities and malformation incidence. Conclusion. A strong negative correlation between PPO activity and number of panicles, and PPO activity and malformation incidence, suggests that the PPO activity is inversely related to both flowering and malformation incidence in mango.

Introduction. A previous paper showed that Al in the nutrient solution affected the growth, biomass production and chemical composition of bananas (Musa spp.). This paper aims at providing complementary results on the effect of Al on water and nutrient uptake by young banana plants. Materials and methods. Vitroplants of five cultivars (Grande Naine, Agbagba, Obino l'Ewaï, Igitsiri and Kayinja) were grown for 40 d in a phytotron with a temperature close to that of their cropping areas. Dilute nutrient solutions without Al and with 78.5 μM Al were supplied continuously with peristaltic pumps. Measurements of daily water and nutrient uptake were carried out twice a week. Rhizosphere acidification or alcalinisation were also monitored. Results and discussion. Aluminium reduced plant water uptake and cumulative detrimental effects were observed. After 40 d, water uptake was only 30-40% of the control. Without Al, nutrient uptake (Ca, Mg, K, P, NO3-N, NH4-N) increased with time, whereas Al inhibited the uptake of all elements, particularly Mg. As for water absorption, cumulative effects were observed: after 40 d, most nutrient uptake rates were reduced by more than 50% relatively to the control. The plantain bananas, Agbagba and Obino l'Ewaï, were more resistant to Al than the others. Changes of temperature are likely to modify Al sensitivity as one cultivar, Kayinja, showed greater Al sensitivity at 28/25°C than at 24/20°C.

Introduction. Le contrôle sanitaire des bananes, essentiel pour assurer la qualité après-récolte du produit commercialisé, dépend beaucoup des techniques d'application des fongicides. Une enquête réalisée in situ en Martinique a mis en évidence des temps et des techniques d'application des produits fongicides variables. Différentes techniques ont été expérimentées pour définir les meilleures conditions opératoires. Matériel et méthodes. Plusieurs facteurs qui, au stade du hangar, peuvent influencer l'efficacité des applications de fongicides après-récolte ont été étudiés : l'emploi ou non d'alun, le temps d'application, le type et le débit des buses, l'angle des pulvérisations. Les traitements ont été réalisés sur fruits après inoculation contrôlée avec Colletotrichum musae sur blessures et sur couronnes. Les fruits ont ensuite été conservés 8 j à 14 °C, puis mis en maturation en simulation industrielle (24 h ; 1 L éthylène × m-3) avant d'être stockés 5 j à 22 °C. La surface des nécroses ou l'altération des pédoncules ont alors été mesurées. Résultats et discussion. L'alun ajouté à du thiabendazole a diminué l'efficacité du fongicide utilisé seul. Le temps d'aspersion a eu un effet sur la performance des produits fongicides, une application de 30 s étant le minimum souhaitable. La combinaison de l'imazalyl au thiabendazole ou au bitertanol a eu un effet favorable pour le contrôle du chancre dans les pourritures de couronne. La comparaison des débits testés a montré qu'un débit de buse de l'ordre de 0,4 L × min-1, appliqué pendant 30 s, garantissait le passage effectif de la solution fongicide entre les fruits et les bouquets. La taille des gouttes (fines ou grosses gouttelettes) a peu d'incidence quand le volume pulvérisé et le temps de contact sont respectés (5 L par tray pendant 30 s). Les performances ont été améliorées en utilisant un tray tubulaire "sans fond " , faisant intervenir une pulvérisation par-dessus et par-dessous. Conclusion. L'action réelle des fongicides est directement liée à une qualité d'application qui intègre le temps et le débit. Les préconisations données, liées à une inoculation expérimentale sévère, sont probablement surestimées ; elles peuvent cependant servir de référence dans les situations où la qualité sanitaire laisse à désirer.

Introduction. The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama, is particularly harmful to citrus plantations as it is one of the two psyllid vectors of the citrus greening disease or Huanglongbing. This disease, which limits the longevity of trees, is due to an intracellular bacterium which mainly affects the phloem. Past experience of biological control of D. citri in Reunion Island. In Reunion Island, this disease, detected in 1967, was the main obstacle to the development of the cultivation of citrus fruit. Control of the vector D. citri, by introducing from India and multiplying on site the specific parasitoid Tamarixia radiata (Waterston), was carried out during 1978 when nearly 4600 adult parasitoids were released. The success of T. radiata combined with the distribution of healthy plant material was at the origin of the revival of the cultivation of citrus fruit in Reunion Island. Programme for a biological control of D. citri in Guadeloupe. In Guadeloupe, D. citri was reported in January 1998. No trace of insect parasitism was found and only one fungus, Hirsutella citriformis Speare, proved, under certain conditions, capable of regulating the populations of this psyllid. Taking into account the experience in Reunion Island and that the greening disease has not shown up in Guadeloupe, the introduction of T. radiata from Reunion Island was made in January 1999. About 1000 T. radiata were released all over the Guadeloupe islands. At present, just a little more than 1 year after the last releases, the parasitoid is established and present in almost all the citrus orchards where psyllid populations have decreased considerably. Quite favorable biological characteristics play a great part in explaining the excellent effectiveness of T. radiata in biological control programmes against D. citri.

Introduction. Essential oils represent an increasing economic importance in the citrus by-product industry. Flash vacuum-expansion, a process leading to the disintegration of plant tissues, was applied to the recovery of essential oils from fruits of four Citrus species. Materials and methods. The flash vacuum-expansion process (steam-heating, then rapid introduction into a vessel under vacuum) was applied to peels of lemon, sweet orange, mandarin and grapefruit. Essential oils were recovered with a condenser, then separated by centrifugation. Oil volatile compounds were separated and identified by coupled capillary gas liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Results and discussion. Peel essential oil yields were (2.41, 1.43, 0.64 and 0.73) kg × t-1 of fruit for lemon, sweet orange, mandarin and grapefruit, respectively. Oils were enriched in limonene and other monoterpenes, while relative concentrations of monoterpene alcohols (linalool, α-terpineol, β-citronellol, nerol, geraniol) and aldehydes (neral, geranial) were lower in comparison with the volatile compounds of native peels. Conclusion. The flash vacuum-expansion process allowed production of citrus peel essential oils with yields comparable to the Food Machinery Corporation (F.M.C.) process. Oils were enriched in monoterpene hydrocarbons and correlatively impoverished in oxygenated volatile constituents.

Introduction. The litchi tree produces fruit in terminal panicles in a development cycle of approximately 4 months. Data on its morphology and anatomy are scarce, although the fruit is of fundamental importance in the Sapindaceae systematic. This work was carried out to study fruit morphology and pericarp anatomy during the development of the cv. Brewster litchi. Materials and methods. Fruits were collected at different development phases on 12-year-old trees. The fruits were morphologically and anatomically studied. After fixation, the samples were sectioned in several anatomical planes, and mounted in temporary or permanent preparations. Results. The flowers were functionally male and female, with a superior bicarpelar ovary with two ovules, rarely three. Frequently, only a single fruit develops. The fruit is a heart-shaped drupe when ripe, fleshy and indehiscent. The pericarp is thin, leathery, rough, wrinkled and red colored, with aril covering all the seed. The fruit begins differentiation with the formation of the pericarp which consists of epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp. Discussion. The litchi fruit is elongated when young, becoming heart-shaped as it develops. It contains one or two seeds and each one is attached to the internal angle of the marginal sutures. When ripe, the litchi has a leathery and broken pericarp because of the presence of brachisclereides immediately below the epidermis, whose function may be protection against mechanical and physiological stresses and herbivorous action.

Introduction. Les comportements de trois fruits tropicaux - papaye (Carica papaya), mangue (Mangifera indica) et banane (Musa acuminata) - traités par déshydratation-imprégnation par immersion (DII) en solutions concentrées de saccharose ont été comparés. Matériel et méthodes. Les cinétiques ont été conduites en bain thermostaté, avec des températures variant de 30 à 60 °C et une concentration initiale de la solution d'immersion fixée à 50 g de saccharose × 100 g-1 de solution. Les fruits ont été parés puis découpés en disques de 9 mm d'épaisseur et 31 mm de diamètre. Le comportement des fruits en DII a été caractérisé par la perte d'eau, le gain en solutés issus de la solution et la perte en solutés propres (vitamines, sels minéraux) du fruit pendant 300 min. Le rapport [fruits/solution] de [1/6,5] a permis d'évaluer le transfert de solutés (vitamines, sels minéraux, acides) du fruit vers la solution, grâce à des mesures directes de teneur en vitamine, conductivité et pH. Résultats et discussion. Le gain en soluté a été d'autant plus important que la teneur initiale du fruit en sucre était faible. Pour les trois fruits et pour les conditions opératoires testées, les pertes en vitamine C estimées à partir de la solution de déshydratation ont été inférieures à 5 mg × 100 g-1 de produit initial. Ces pertes ont été plus importantes lors du traitement des mangues. Enfin, l'augmentation de la température a favorisé les transferts de matière.

La plante.Sechium edule Sw. appartient à la famille des cucurbitacées. Originaire du Mexique, cette robuste liane monoïque est aujourd'hui cultivée dans de nombreux autres pays tropicaux. Elle produit des fruits piriformes connus principalement sous les noms de christophine, chayotte ou chouchou. Pauvres en calories et riches en sels minéraux, ces fruits sont intéressants sur le plan diététique. Dans certaines conditions, la plante développe également des tubercules comestibles riches en amidon. Culture. La Christophine est généralement cultivée sous tonnelle, dans des zones humides à températures modérées. Sa culture est peu contraignante et conduit à des rendements de production élevés. Les attaques fongiques et les nématodes peuvent être évités en mettant en œuvre les traitements adéquats. Valorisation. Le principal frein à l'exportation et l'exploitation industrielle de S. edule est sa conservation après récolte. Un emballage sous film plastique associé à des températures voisines de 10 °C permet une conservation pendant 40 à 50 j. Ces résultats sont encore améliorés en utilisant une irradiation λ. Conclusion. De nos jours, les différentes parties de la plante sont utilisées de façon artisanale dans les domaines culinaire et médicinal. La transformation à l'échelle industrielle de la christophine nécessite la recherche de variétés produisant des fruits de qualité homogène, résistant mieux aux maladies et présentant de bons rendements en fruits, jeunes tiges et tubercules.

Introduction. To compare the mineral nutrition of organically and normally grown banana plants, observations were made on growth and yield of organic banana plants, at the Canary Islands. The data were then discussed opposite the results previously reported for conventional plantations. Materials and methods. Growth parameters (plant height, leaf emission rate, pseudostem circumference) and yield parameters (bunch weight, number of hands, finger grade, etc.) were measured during ten months on an organically grown banana plantation of Dwarf Cavendish cv. Leaf N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn contents were also assessed. Results and discussion. Leaf emission rates showed higher values in late spring and early summer (0.099-0.109 leaf$\cdot$d-1), while pseudostem circumference grew more in late spring (0.238 cm$\cdot$d-1) than in summer. In August, pseudostem circumference decreased dramatically, probably because the plants with a larger circumference had flowered before that month and could not be measured. Bunches gave good yields for the zone (43.59 kg on average) and had a high mean number of hands (12.79). Number of fingers of the second upper hand (25.63), their grade (37.63 cm), length (23.50 cm) and weight (165.19 g) ranged from normal to high. Month of harvesting influenced yield and quality of the fruits. Leaf content of N, P, Mg, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn fell within the normal range related to the conventionally grown banana plants. Potassium foliar content showed low levels but not deficiencies, whereas Ca leaf concentrations were high but not excessive. No relationship was found among leaf nutrient levels and growth, yield and fruit quality parameters.

Introduction. Brazil is one of the most important producers of passion fruits. Inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) may reduce or eliminate the need for phosphate fertilization on this crop. We investigated the response of passion fruit seedlings to inoculation with AMF and phosphorus (P) supply. Materials and methods. A greenhouse experiment was carried out in a factorial design. The seedlings were inoculated with 100 spores per plant of single or mixed AMF inoculum on sterilized or non-sterilized soil which was amended with (11 or 30) mgP × dm-3 soil applied as superphosphate or used unfertilized (4 mgP × dm-3 soil). Relative mycorrhizal dependency (RMD) of passion fruit was estimated for each treatment of inoculation, soil sterilization, and P level, by expressing the difference between the dry mass of mycorrhizal plants and non-mycorrhizal plants as a percentage of the dry mass of mycorrhizal plants. Results. Inoculation was effective only on plants grown in sterilized soil with (4 or 11) mgP × dm-3 soil. Plants were "facultatively mycotrophic" when associated with AMF and when receiving a supply of 30 mgP × dm-3 soil. Seedlings in unfertilized soil with 4 mgP × dm-3 soil were excessively dependent on the mycorrhizal association. In soil with 11 mgP × dm-3 soil, seedlings were marginally to moderately dependent, depending upon the AMF species used. All inoculated seedlings, without considering soil sterilization, were marginally dependent in soil with 30 mgP × dm-3 soil. In sterilized soil, independently of P, they were moderately dependent. However, in the same soil, with 30 mgP × dm-3 soil, the seedlings were marginally dependent. Discussion - conclusion. The relative mycorrhizal dependency (RMD) of the passion fruit cultivar used was influenced by the species of the inoculated AMF, soil sterilization and soil P level. Passion fruit obtained significant benefit from inoculation with AMF; thus, these fungi can be used to improve plant growth even without P fertilization.

Introduction. Black plum (Vitex doniana sweet) is a plant widely used by various communities in Nigeria for many purposes, including production of wine and jam. Ripe mature black plum fruit for food use commonly collected from the ground instead of plucked which is more hygienic. An investigation was conducted to find out the mycoflora on the surface and within the fruits of black plum fruits. Materials and methods. Mycoflora associated with the surface, skin, pulp and juice of healthy intact fruits of black plum was isolated in malt extract agar and potato dextrose agar and identified. Pathogenicity test was carried out with three pathogens of the fruit. Results and discussion. Fungi with incidence of 20-100% of occurrence were classified as major components and those below 20% of occurrence were regarded as minor components. Yeasts making up the major components in the ripe fruits were Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans, while the minor yeast components were Rhodotrula sp., S. coreanus and Pichia sp. Filamentous fungi constituting major components were Aspergillus niger and Penicillium sp. whereas minor components were Botryodiplodia theobromae and Penicillium chrysogenum. Spoilage of fruits was caused by B. theobromae, Aspergillus sp. and A. niger. Conclusion. Yeasts and, occasionally, filamentous fungi occur within apparently healthy fruits of Vitex doniana sweet. Stages of development when the yeasts enter the pulp of the fruit need to be thoroughly investigated.

Introduction. Jusqu'à présent, les recherches entreprises en Algérie pour contrôler P. citrella Stainton ou mineuse des agrumes, parasite responsable de nombreux dégâts sur agrumes, ont été très limitées. Une étude sur la dynamique des populations du parasite et l'impact de son complexe parasitaire a été entreprise pendant trois années, dans l'Est de la Mitidja en Algérie. Matériel et méthodes. Des échantillonnages ont été effectués, de 1996 à 1998, deux fois par mois sur deux vergers, l'un de citronniers, l'autre d'orangers. Des dénombrements aléatoires ont été faits sur 500 feuilles par prélèvement. Au laboratoire, les différents stades de développement de la mineuse et leur état (vivants, morts ou parasités) ont été notés par face foliaire et par orientation des rameaux échantillonnés. Résultats et discussion. Une forte contamination par P. citrella a été observée en été et au début de l'automne. Les pousses printanières ont été partiellement contaminées en 1996 et 1997 et pratiquement indemnes en 1998. Le taux de mortalité des populations a été très important en 1997 : 53 % sur orangers et 46,48 % sur citronniers. Quelle que soit l'année, le deuxième stade larvaire a été le plus affecté. Les sex-ratios ont été de 0,12 (citronniers) et 0,11 (orangers). Trois parasitoïdes locaux ont été identifiés : Cirrospilus pictus, C. vittatus et Pnigalio mediterraneus. En 1996, ils ont donné lieu à des taux de parasitisme maximaux de 22 % à 29 % sur citronniers et 26 % et 30 % sur orangers. Ces taux ont augmenté en 1997 et 1998, du fait de l'introduction de Semielacher petiolatus. Conclusion. Pour renforcer l'activité des auxiliaires locaux, il faudrait tout d'abord procéder à des élevages et des lâchers importants de S. petiolatus, tenter à nouveau d'élever et de lâcher l'espèce A. citricola, enfin d'introduire d'autres parasitoïdes performants.

Introduction. The fruit of `Encore' mandarin (Citrus deliciosa × Citrus nobilis) usually shows chlorotic spots in the epicarp from the first stages of development. This peel disorder triggers off, thereafter, the occurrence of a large quantity of dark stains (pre-harvest `peel pitting'). Materials and methods. A biochemical and ultra-structural study of the flavedo, using epicarp with and without stains, was carried out. Quality assays were assessed on the edible portion of the fruit or on juice. Results. The cell structure of pitted and unpitted epicarp analysed by electron microscopy revealed that dark spots were associated with the degradation of cellular membranes. The peroxidase system that shields the epicarp against photooxidative stress showed an inhibition of catalase activity and an increase of superoxide dismutase functioning. Moreover, the activities of ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase remained unaffected in stained tissues. In sunshade trees, it was also found that the number of dark stains per fruit decreased but the internal quality of the endocarp was not significantly affected. The weight and the caliber of the fruit also slightly decreased. Discussion. High light intensities induce an oxidative stress in the epicarp, which is characterized by an increased peroxidation and degradation of biological membranes. On the other hand, protection against solar radiation alleviates the stress, but, although not affecting the internal quality of the fruit, slightly decreases the fruit weight and size.

Introduction. The date palm tree is one of the fruit trees most cultivated in the Arabian Gulf States. Bioregulators were used for the quality and productivity improvement of date palm tree fruits. A study was conducted to assess the relative effectiveness of GA3, NAA, ethephon and a mixture of growth regulators on some fruit characteristics and productivity of the Barhee date palm tree cultivar. Materials and methods. Five selected female uniform date palm trees of the cultivar Barhee were pollinated on March 5-15, 1994, 1995 and 1996, by placing eight fresh male strands on the female spadix center (flower cluster).Ten flower clusters were used on each tree and divided into five groups of two flower clusters. Each of these groups was subjected to one of the following treatments: control (water), 150 mg GA3 × L-1, 100 mg NAA × L-1, 1 000 mg ethephon × L-1 and a mixture of these three growth regulators. Then the fruit setting, fruit flesh and dry matter percentages, the total soluble solids, the fruit ripening, and the fruit weight per bunch and per tree were measured. Results and discussion. The data showed that the application of GA3 or ethephon on flower clusters of Barhee date palm trees had no constant effect on fruit characteristics and productivity of trees. NAA or growth regulator mixture applications on Barhee flower clusters reduced the fruit dry matter and fruit ripening percentages and increased the fruit weight per bunch and per tree. Conclusion. Treatments of Barhee date palm flower clusters, 20 d after pollination, with NAA or the specific growth regulator mixture decreased the dry matter percentage and the fruit ripening and increased the fruit flesh percentage and the date palm tree yield, therefore, these treatments could be recommended to improve the productivity of date palm trees in the region.

Introduction. Les transferts de matière intervenant au cours du procédé de DII influencent la composition finale du produit. Ces transferts dépendent essentiellement de la forme et de la taille des produits immergés, ainsi que de la température, la concentration et la nature de la solution d'immersion. Afin de parvenir à une bonne maîtrise de ces paramètres et d'obtenir, après traitement, un produit de qualité, les cinétiques de certains éléments constitutifs de mangues (Mangifera indica) ont été suivies au cours d'un traitement par DII. Matériel et méthodes. Des morceaux de mangues d'une variété camerounaise locale, de 9 mm d'épaisseur et de 31 mm de diamètre, ont été immergés dans une solution de saccharose à 50, 60 ou 70 °Brix, maintenue à une température stabilisée à 30, 50 ou 60 °C. Pour les échantillons, les paramètres suivis au cours du temps ont été la perte d'eau, la réduction de poids, le gain en soluté et le degré Brix, tandis que, pour la solution, ce sont la concentration en vitamine C, le pH et la conductivité qui ont été mesurés. Résultats et discussion. La perte d'eau et le degré Brix final des produits ont augmenté avec la température et la concentration de la solution. Au-delà de 50 °C, l'augmentation de la température n'a pas influencé significativement la réduction de poids qui, pour une température donnée, a augmenté avec la concentration de la solution d'immersion. Le gain en solutés a diminué avec l'augmentation de la concentration. Enfin, pour les conditions opératoires testées, les pertes en vitamine C ont augmenté avec la température et diminué avec l'augmentation de la concentration de la solution de saccharose.

Introduction. Originaire du Brésil, l'anacardier est largement présent dans la zone intertropicale. Une synthèse sur les intérêts économiques et les différentes voies de valorisations des produits de cet arbre a été effectuée. L'anacardier. De part sa résistance, notamment aux périodes de sécheresse, l'espèce Anacardium occidentale (anacardiacée) est adaptée à de nombreuses zones tropicales. Malgré sa tolérance aux attaques parasitaires, elle peut être sensible à certains insectes et attaques fongiques comme l'oïdium. Les rendements moyens obtenus pour la noix sont d'environ 600 kg × ha-1 × an-1 ; ils sont susceptibles d'être améliorés grâce à la sélection variétale. La noix de cajou. Elle est le fruit de l'anacardier au sens botanique du terme. L'amande est riche en lipides et contient environ 20 % de protéines. En 1999, les principaux producteurs mondiaux de noix de cajou ont été l'Inde, le Nigéria, le Brésil et la Tanzanie, qui ont produit chacun plus de 100 000 t × an-1. Après concassage de la coque et émondage, ce produit à forte valeur ajoutée est le plus souvent exporté. La pomme de cajou. Elle correspond au pédoncule hypertrophié de la noix qui possède à maturité une chair juteuse et sucrée. Ses principales caractéristiques sont son astringence et sa teneur élevée en vitamine C (200-300 mg × 100 g-1). La pomme de cajou est assez peu valorisée sauf en Inde et au Brésil, notamment sous forme de jus de fruit. Autres productions. Le baume de cajou est une production secondaire assez originale : extrait des coques de la noix, ce liquide corrosif, riche en composés phénoliques, est utilisé dans l'industrie chimique. Conclusion. La culture de l'anacardier, avec sa diversité de produits et notamment avec la noix qui est bien intégrée aux marchés internationaux, semble pouvoir constituer une source intéressante de revenus pour les zones tropicales sèches. Néanmoins, la pomme mériterait d'être mieux valorisée car elle reste encore un sous-produit de l'industrie de la noix de cajou.

Introduction. Afin d'évaluer l'effet de Meliponula erythra sur la fructification et donc sur la production de D. edulis, l'activité de pollinisation de la mélipone a été observée dans la région de Yaoundé (Cameroun). Matériel et méthodes. Dans un verger expérimental de safoutiers, quatre lots ont été déterminés à partir du marquage de 174 bouquets floraux différenciés selon leur type (mâle-hermaphrodite ou femelle) et la présence ou non de protection de ces bouquets vis-à-vis de la visite des insectes. Le rythme saisonnier de la mélipone, l'activité journalière des abeilles, l'abondance des butineuses par inflorescence et l'indice de fructification des bouquets floraux marqués ont été évalués. Résultats et discussion.M. erythra a fréquenté D. edulis toute la journée et pendant toute la période de floraison. Les butineuses ont récolté du nectar de façon intense et permanente sur tous les types de fleurs. Le pollen n'a été récolté que sur les fleurs mâles et les fleurs hermaphrodites, et au cours de la matinée. Le plus grand nombre d'ouvrières butinant au même instant a été de 900 par plant de type mâle-hermaphrodite et de 250 par pied femelle. La durée moyenne d'une visite a été de 7,82 sec par fleur femelle (fleur à nectar) et de 8,32 sec par fleur mâle ou hermaphrodite (fleur à nectar et pollen). Le rythme des visites de M. erythra a été positivement corrélé au rythme d'épanouissement des fleurs de D. edulis. L'indice de fructification des bouquets floraux non protégés a été significativement supérieur de 25,61 % à celui des bouquets floraux protégés des insectes. Cette fructification améliorée serait liée par une action positive des M. erythra sur l'autopollinisation et la pollinisation croisée. Conclusion. La conservation des abeilles mélipones dans les vergers de safoutiers doit être encouragée.

Introduction. La culture des agrumes est très répandue en Guinée sous forme de vergers de case. La moyenne Guinée (Fouta Djalon), principale région productrice d'oranges, assure environ les deux tiers de la production nationale et la presque totalité des exportations régionales. Cependant, à la fin de 1993, la cercosporiose due à Phaeoramularia angolensis a envahi les zones d'altitude du pays à partir de foyers primaires situés en moyenne Guinée, entraînant une nette diminution de la production. Matériel et méthodes. Trois enquêtes par région naturelle et par an ont été effectuées dans plusieurs localités du pays pour établir les limites d'extension de la maladie. Des échantillons de feuilles et de fruits suspects, prélevés sur 25 arbres par localité, ont été identifiés en laboratoire. La vitesse moyenne de progression de la maladie a été estimée. Résultats et discussion. Les observations faites en champ et complétées par les travaux de laboratoire entre 1995 et 1998 ont confirmé la présence de la maladie. Les zones agrumicoles situées à plus de 400 m d'altitude ont été particulièrement touchées par le fléau. Les zones basses et chaudes de la Guinée maritime et de la haute Guinée sont épargnées. La maladie progresserait à une vitesse de 23 km$\cdot$an-1. Conclusion. La cercosporiose des agrumes continue sa progression en Guinée. La presque totalité des vergers du Fouta Djalon est atteinte. La reconversion des zones agrumicoles touchées par la maladie devrait être envisagée par diversification fruitière et délocalisation des nouvelles plantations vers des zones basses et écologiquement protégées.
