The Symptom Check-List 90R (SCL-90R) in a French general psychiatric 708 outpatient sample: is there a factor structure?

Summary

During a French study on anxiety disorders, 708 outpatients seen in general psychiatric settings answered the French version of the SCL-90 R (Symptom Check-List 90-Revised) as a self-report check-list of complaints. A principal component analysis followed by screenplot examination and Varimax rotation yielded an 11-factor solution explaining 47.5% of total variance. These orthogonal factors each have at least 3 items whose loadings are above 0.4 and are all clinically significant. After replication on split-half samples, the 3 main factors (Depression, Somatization, Panic-Agoraphobia) proved to be stable. These results are compared to those from other international studies.

Dans le cadre d’une Enquête Nationale sur l’Anxiété, 708 consultants en psychiatrie ambulatoire ont répondu à la version française de la « Symptom Check-List » (SCL-90R). Une analyse en composantes principales a permis de proposer, après examen des valeurs propres et rotation varimax, une solution à 11 facteurs, expliquant 47,5 % de la variance totale. Ces facteurs orthogonaux ont tous au moins 3 items de charge supérieure ou égale à 0,40 et une signification clinique cohérente; ils ont été nommés: Dépression, Somatisation, Panique–Agoraphobie, Culpabilité, Sensitivité interpersonnelle, Hostilité-Impulsivité, facteur Obsessionel-Compulsif, Evitement social, Nervosité-Irritabilité, Troubles du Sommeil, facteur Psychotique.

Les 3 principaux facteurs, Dépression, Somatisation, Panique–Agoraphobie représentent à eux trois 21% de la variance totale et se sont montrés stables, ce qui est en faveur de leur emploi comme sous-scores. Ces résultats sont comparés à ceux d’analyses étrangères.
