The Task of Apologetics in the Future: Karl Heim's Theology after Fifty Years

Published online by Cambridge University Press:  02 February 2009

Extract

Karl Heim has just completed two epochs in his theological biography. The first is a twenty-one year project entitled Der evangelische Glaube und das Denken der Gegenwart, a series of six volumes in which an impressive span of contemporary problems has been probed and illuminated by the Christian faith. The second is the golden anniversary of the literary effort which he initiated in 1902 with a volume entitled Psychologismus oder Anti-Psychologismus and which he has now rounded out with his Weltschöpfung und Weltende.

page 374 note 2 Emil Brunner's works also illustrate this method. He himself has given it the aggressive name, ‘eristic’ or ‘Christian Socratism’, and he refers to it as ‘theology's other task’. Zwischen den Zeiten, 1929, pp. 255–76.

page 376 note 1 In the light of his earlier criticism of apologetics, Barth's most recent pronouncement obliges him to a more expansive elaboration. ‘In some one sense all theologians in all times have been and also must be apologists as well. But it is clear that one has thereby seen and comprehended only one aspect of his undertaking, and this not the tendency most important to him, but certainly only a noteworthy by-product of his work.’ ‘Rudolph Bultmann: Ein Versuch ihn zu verstehen’, Theologische Studien, Heft, 34, p. 43.
