Guillaume de Dole: an unpublished Old French Romance

Extract

The only known manuscript of the Old French Metrical romance quoted as Guillaume de Dole, but entitled by its author the “Romans de la Rose,” is preserved in the Library of the Vatican at Rome (Regina, No. 1725). It is a small folio of the fourteenth century, on parchment, 130 leaves, inscribed in a neat and sufficiently legible Gothic character, without ornamentation; and, with the exception of several leaves at the beginning, which are lost, is in a good state of preservation.

10 Coquault: Table chronologique, extraite sur l'histoire de l'église et de la province de Reims, in 4to, Reima M.DC.L.—This is not, however, the edition to which Trabé makes his references, as the pages do not correspond. The work is an extremely curious one, trveing the history of Reima from the time of the Deluge (the l starting point, for that matter, of the Middle Age chroniclers) la the form, in many cases, of chronologically arranged hints and suggestions of historical facts, rather than of positive information. Here are one or two illustrations:

1226 (p. 290) Du serment de l'Evéque de Beauvais, &c.

St Mile Evéque de Beauvais prit un coadjuteur.

1228. De l' Interdit mis par le chapitre in toutes les Eglises de Reims, pour les entreprises faites par les gena du ban del' Archevéque, sur les droits de l' Eglise L'Archevéque, sur ce requis n'cn voulant faire justice, compromis fait par l'Archev, et le chapitre a Milo Ev que de Beauvals, et la sentence dudlt Milo.

1235 (p. 304) Mort de Milo de Nanthel il Evéque de Beauvals, étant allé à Rome pour avoir raisce contre les habitans de Beauvals, &c.

Wolfram Zingerle ‘Ueber R. de H. und scine Werke, Erlangen. 1880,‘ reaches the conclusion that the Raoul of Raguidel is not Raoul de Houdenc; but his own showing seems to me to point rather to their identity.
