This book and its associated research were generously supported by the European Research Council under the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement no. 716923). The research project upon which this volume was based was conducted at the Jacques Delors Centre of the Hertie School from 2017 to 2022. I am grateful to many people for providing the environment from which this book sprang. Foremost among them are the three wonderful postdoctoral researchers who spearheaded this project and whose work is showcased in this volume: Ana Bobić, Adina Akbik and Tomasz Wozniakowski. Working with these researchers has been one of the most rewarding phases of my academic career, and I am very grateful that they decided to take this important step on their academic journeys with me at Hertie. During the project, we were assisted by a number of research assistants, some of whom directly assisted with this volume. We would like, therefore, to thank Harry McNeill Adams, Elena Bertolini, Theresa Boesl, Evi Kroeker, Francesco Lanzone, Ronan Riordan and Rebecca Segall for their work at various stages of the project. I would like to thank Gabi Bruhl, Nina Shadrina, Markus Jachtenfuchs and the Jacques Delors Centre for providing the intellectual home in which this book was written. I would like to thank my authors for participating in the project and workshop, to begin with, and for their dedication and patience in seeing it to fruition, as well as Bitteschoen.tv for the cover art at the front of the book. Finally, I would like to thank Pierre, Lily and Tristan for their love and patience regarding the time this research project took from them. I hope our readers enjoy the volume.
