The effect of temperature on grinding-induced texture in tetragonal lead titanate (PT) has been investigated as a function of the magnitude of loading applied to the sample surface during grinding, using in situ x-ray diffraction (XRD) with an area detector. Compared to the ground PT under lower loading conditions (5 N), the ground PT under higher loading conditions (40 N) retains strong ferroelastic texture near the Curie temperature (TC) around 350 °C and undergoes smaller changes in lattice parameter or tetragonality versus temperature during in situ thermal cycling between room temperature and approximately 100 °C above the TC. Inhibited depoling of ground PT materials investigated by in situ texture measurements demonstrates the effects of residual stresses.

We have studied grain-growth and texture development in polycrystalline lithium fluoride thin films using dark-field transmission electron microscopy. We demonstrate that we can isolate the size distribution of 〈111〉 surface normal grains from the overall size distribution, based on simple and plausible assumptions about the texture. The {111} texture formation and surface morphology were also observed by x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy, respectively. The grain-size distributions become clearly bimodal as the annealing time increases, and we deduce that the short-time size distributions are also a sum of two overlapping peaks. The smaller grain-size peak in the distribution corresponds to the {111}-oriented grains, which do not grow significantly, while all other grains increase in size with annealing time. A novel feature of the LiF films is that the {111} texture component strengthens with annealing, despite the absence of growth for these grains, through the continued nucleation of new grains.

We compute the strain fields and the interactions between dislocations at the junctions of classical small-angle grain boundaries. It is shown that, in contrast with the results for infinite small-angle boundaries, there are always forces acting on the dislocations in the arrays that define the grain boundaries, and that there is also an excess elastically stored energy associated with the triple junction (TJ). The forces on the dislocations and the excess stored energy of the TJ are shown to vary with the dihedral angles formed by the grain boundaries, and that the “equilibrium” dihedral angle based upon the Herring equation and the energies of the individual grain boundaries does not correspond to any kind of force or energy minimum. This relates to an unwarranted assumption in Herring's original derivation, that no interactions occur between the grain boundaries that make up a TJ.

The effect of temperature on grinding-induced texture in tetragonal lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and lead titanate (PT) has been investigated using in situ x-ray diffraction (XRD) with an area detector. In contrast with previous results on electrical poling, mechanically-ground PT and soft PZT materials retain strong ferroelastic textures during thermal cycling, even after excursions to temperatures slightly above the Curie temperature. The relationship between the residual stresses in the surface region, caused by grinding, and those resulting from domain wall motion is elucidated by in situ texture measurements obtained during thermal cycling.

We have measured the porosity in thin films of lithium fluoride (LiF), magnesium fluoride (MgF2), barium fluoride (BaF2), and calcium fluoride (CaF2) as a function of the substrate temperature for films deposited by thermal evaporation onto glass substrates. The amount of porosity in the thin films was measured using an atomic force microscope and a quartz crystal thickness monitor. The porosity was very sensitive to the substrate temperature and decreased as the substrate temperature increased. Consistent behavior was observed among all of the materials in this study.

We have used a transmission electron microscope (TEM)-based method to extract grain size information for 〈111〉 surface normal grains in lithium fluoride (LiF) thin films, and applied this to analyze textures as a function of substrate temperature and annealing time. The size distributions of grains diffracting into the (111)+(200) and (220) rings were measured separately using dark field (DF) TEM images. From these data, we deduce the distribution of 〈111〉 surface normal grain sizes based on the assumption that only 3 principal textures (100), (110) and (111) exist in films. The (111) texture formation was also observed by x-ray diffraction (XRD). For all deposition and annealing conditions, the grain size data can be matched to lognormal distributions within an acceptable error, but at longer annealing times the distribution becomes bimodal. A novel feature of the LiF films is that the (111) texture component strengthens with annealing and substrate temperature, through the nucleation of new grains rather than the growth of existing ones.

High-resolution transmission electron microscopy studies of hydrothermally derived platelike lead titanate nanoparticles reveal that below a critical size of approximately 70 nm, the single ferroelectric domain polarization axis reorients from perpendicular to parallel to the plate. We suggest that during particle growth, ions in the hydrothermal processing medium compensate for the ferroelectric depolarization energy. When the processing medium is removed by washing and drying, single domain nanoparticles minimize their depolarization energy by c-axis flipping.

In spite of their interesting properties, nanostructured materials have found limited uses because of the cost of preparation and the limited range of materials that can be synthesized. It has been shown that most of these limitations can be overcome by subjecting a material to large-scale deformation, as occurs during common machining operations. The chips produced during lathe machining of a variety of pure metals, steels, and other alloys are shown to be nanostructured with grain (crystal) sizes between 100 and 800 nm. The hardness of the chips is found to be significantly greater than that of the bulk material.

Gold thin films have a {111} texture component that strengthens during heating. We show that this texture can be affected by the formation of twins, which may be influenced by the substrate material. Gold thin films were evaporated onto rock salt and glass substrates, and incrementally annealed without removal from the substrate. The texture was mapped using an area detector x-ray diffractometer. The films showed a primary {111} fiber texture and a secondary {200} fiber texture on both substrates with the addition of a {511} fiber texture component, which is much more pronounced on rock salt than on other substrates. The {511} surface normal derives from a twin rotation, showing that there is more twinning on rock salt than on glass although there is no lattice matching between the rock salt and gold.

A balance of surface energies exists where grain boundaries meet the surface of a flat solid specimen. The energy balance leads to grain boundary grooving on the surface, and the establishment of the equilibrium dihedral angle. Triple junctions are defined at the intersections of three grain boundaries. Surface grooves are typically observed to be the deepest at the triple junctions. In this work, a simple model is constructed of a polycrystalline thin film using Surface Evolver numerical software. The equilibrium sur face groove depths at triple junctions are investigated as a function of triple junction line tension. Results show that line tension can affect grain boundary groove depths for grain sizes less than ∼1μm.

We have investigated the consequences of negative triple junction energy in grain growth. Two and three-dimensional models for total system energy, incorporating varying triple junction energy are developed. These models show that there is a decrease in overall system energy with grain size corresponding to the driving force for grain growth. Although the free energy available to drive grain growth is reduced under some conditions, it is never removed for any reasonable values of the triple junction energy.

Nanocrystalline lead titanate was synthesized by reacting nanocrystalline titanium oxide in aqueous solutions of potassium hydroxide and lead acetate at 200 degrees C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and TEM studies suggest that the initial KOH concentration influenced the nucleation and growth behavior of the lead titanate nanoparticles. Powders were processed in aqueous solutions containing 0.10 M lead acetate and a Pb:Ti ratio of 1, with varying concentrations of KOH. Powders processed in 0.01 M KOH were composed of irregularly shaped particles with 50-100 nm in size, processing in 0.10 M KOH produced particles with finger-like morphology and broader particle size distribution, and processing in 1.0 M KOH resulted in anisometric plates with (001) facets, and 100-200 nm in size. XRD studies have shown systematic variations in the position and symmetry of reflections with a l component as a function of particle size. This indicates that the c/a ratio of lead titanate increases with decreasing nanoparticle size

We present a model for dislocation array image effects during epilayer island growth. Misfit dislocations often appear at an interface between phases, to accommodate a lattice mismatch. In many situations, such as early film growth, one of the phases may be discontinuous, leaving the interface region clearly bounded. The structure of such a finite interface differs from the normally-modeled infinite boundary because of end effects near the edges of the islands. We have modeled the dislocation structure of such a finite interface in MBE-grown InAs islands on GaP, and compare our results to high-resolution images of the same structure. The 11% misfit causes dislocation introduction from the outset of growth. Islands containing between 4 and 14 dislocations were examined, and dislocation spacings were found to be enlarged near the island perimeters. The model provides a clear understanding of this and other effects.

Well-annealed thin films are typically observed to exhibit mean grain diameters that are approximately equal to the film thickness. The standard explanation of this “sheet thickness effect” is that it results from a balance of grain boundary curvature in two different directions which, in turn, results from pinning at grain boundary grooves. TEM experiments have been performed to assess this model, and it is found that the predicted curvature about axes in the film plane is absent. Alternate explanations of the sheet thickness effect are considered.

We have investigated compliance with the σ-product rule at triple junctions with a common [111] axis using computer simulations and in real thin films, using electron microscopy. Large discrepancies exist between the simulations, which assume randomly distributed misorientations, and the experiments. Although for both cases the rule fails at most triple junctions, the real material shows a much higher than expected occurrences of compliance. This result can be explained in two distinct ways: first, there might be a preference for triple junctions that obey the rule (implying a distinct influence of the triple junction itself). Alternatively, the misorientations in the real crystal might not be randomly distributed: if there is a preference for boundaries that have only small deviations from coincidence, there will be an increase in the compliance with the rule.

Secondary grain boundary dislocations in large-angle grain boundaries (also called dsc-dislocations) can be described as local variations in the density of the primary (or lattice) dislocations that make up the boundary. We present a simple meso-scale simulation in which the interactions of primary dislocations with each other and with the crystal lattice produce secondary dislocations with smaller Burgers vectors and larger spacing. We use the model to explore the interactions of the primary and secondary defects with a free surface terminating the grain boundary, and demonstrate cases in which the primary dislocations dominate the interactions, forcing the secondary dislocations to increase their energy. Other cases are found, for which all of the dislocations can respond in such a way that their energy decreases. The creation of interfacial disclinations is also demonstrated.
