Application of colour combinations on visual search tasks under vibration environments

Colour is widely utilised as a visual coding system in visual search, but its application under vibration conditions (e.g., in various vehicles) has not been fully explored. This study was designed to examine the effect of colour combinations on performance of visual search tasks conducted in vibration conditions. Forty-eight university students participated in an experiment where they were required to identify target type and location under 24 colour combinations (half in negative polarity and half in positive polarity) and three vibration conditions (static, low, and high). The findings showed that vibration did not significantly affect performance, perceptions, or physiological aspects. Colour combination significantly affected response time, and the participants preferred colour combinations that had the potential to produce better performance. Colour combinations with negative polarity (e.g., yellow on black and white on black) are recommended for presenting search interfaces. These findings are of importance in human–computer interface designs for information display under vibration conditions.
Genome-wide analysis of gene expression profile in the respiratory tree of sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus) in response to hypoxia conditions

The sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus is a deposit-feeder and vital for marine benthic ecosystems. Hypoxia can influence the behaviour and even lead to massive mortality in A. japonicus in the wild. It is important to understand the molecular responses of A. japonicus when exposed to acute changes in dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration. In this study, RNA-seq provided a general overview of the gene expression profiles of the respiratory tree of A. japonicus exposed to DO of 8 mg l−1 (DO8), 4 mg l−1 (DO4) and 2 mg l−1 (DO2) conditions. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) screening with the NOISeq method identified 51, 59 and 61 DEGs according to the criteria of fold change ≥2 and divergence probability ≥0.8 in the comparisons of DO2 vs DO4, DO2 vs DO8 and DO4 vs DO8, respectively. Gene ontology analysis showed that ‘cellular process’ and ‘binding’ had the most enriched DEGs in the categories of ‘biological process’ and ‘molecular function’, respectively (catalytic activity also had the most enriched DEGs in the category of ‘molecular function’ based on the comparison of DO2 vs DO8), while ‘cell’ and ‘cell part’ had the most enriched DEGs in the category of ‘cellular component’. The DEGs were mapped to 79, 81 and 104 pathways in the KEGG database, and 8, 29 and 16 pathways were significantly enriched, respectively. The DO-specific DEGs identified in this study of the respiratory tree are important targets for further research into the biochemical mechanisms involved in the response of the sea cucumber to changes in the DO concentration.
Photocatalytic growth and plasmonic properties of Ag nanoparticles on TiO2 films

Using nanoparticulate TiO2 films, the photocatalytic growth of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) in the AgNO3 aqueous solution has been studied in terms of reduction, nucleation, and coalescence. It was proved that Ag primary particles were formed in a growth time of <1 s after the photocatalysis started. The growth dynamics was found to be critical for isotropic and anisotropic growth of Ag NPs, depending on the AgNO3 concentration and surface properties of TiO2 films. In the AgNO3 solutions of ≤300 mg/L, the isotropic growth dominates the growth dynamic behavior, producing irregularly spherical Ag NPs. In the AgNO3 solutions of ≥400 mg/L, the increased reduction rate promotes the formation of Ag nanoplates in the product. Ostwald ripening and oriented attachment were suggested to be the mechanisms dominating the isotropic and anisotropic growth, respectively. A photocatalytic growth model of Ag NPs was proposed by taking Ag atom and Ag+ ion diffusion into consideration. The plasmonic properties of the Ag–TiO2 films were studied in terms of extinction, surface enhanced Raman scattering, and fluorescence enhancement.

Innovative printing technology enables fine feature deposition (below 10μm) of electronic materials onto low-temperature, non-planar substrates without masks. This could be a promising technology to meet the requirements of present and future microelectronic systems. Silver nanoparticles (NP) ink is widely used for printed electronics; however, its electrical conductivity is low compared to bulk materials. In order to improve the electrical conductivity of printed tracks for the aerosol printing technique, we developed a novel carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/silver NP ink by mechanical stirring and sonication. The produced sample inks with different concentration of CNTs that were printed with Aerosol Jet® printing system. We found that the CNTs bridged the defects in some printed silver lines, thereby lowering the electrical resistivity by 38%. However, no further improvements were observed with a higher CNT concentration in the silver NP ink samples. We hypothesize that CNT bridges connects the defects thus decreasing the resistivity of printed silver lines when CNT concentration is under the percolation level. However, when it is above a concentration threshold, the resistivity of printed silver lines stops decreasing and even increases because of Schottky barrier effect.

Influence of genetically modified rice containing codA gene on physiological metabolism and genetic horizontal transformation in fed rats

To analyse the influence of genetically modified (GM) rice (Oryza sativa) containing the exogenous choline oxidase (codA) gene on physiological metabolism and genetic horizontal transformation in the fed rats, the animals were divided randomly into two groups. One group was fed with the feedstuff containing 30% of transgenic rice. The remaining (control) group was fed with the feedstuff containing 30% of non-transgenic rice. After 30 days, growth, physiological metabolism parameters such as growth hormone (GH), insulin, glucagon, 3,3′,5-triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and the genetic horizontal transformation were analysed. Results indicated that the weight of all rats from the two groups was similar (P>0.05). Also, there was no significant difference in the level of GH, insulin, glucagon, T4, T3 and TSH between the treated and untreated rats. The serum urea nitrogen (SUN), glucose, the glutamate–pyruvate transaminase (GTP), as well as the total cholesterol, of treated rats were almost identical to those of the control (P>0.05). Moreover, no target DNA sequence of rice endogenous sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) gene or exogenous choline oxidase (codA) gene was detected in organs (liver, muscle, pancreas, etc.) except the stomach, gastrointestinal and rectum contents, and no genetic horizontal transformation was observed in rats fed with transgenic rice.
In vitro culture and mtDNA fate of ibex–rabbit nuclear transfer embryos

Rabbit oocyte can be used as the recipient in interspecies somatic cell nuclear transfer (iSCNT). This work was undertaken in order to study the developmental competence of Capra ibex somatic cells reprogrammed by rabbit oocytes and the fate of mitochondria in iSCNT embryos. Metaphase II (MII) oocytes from superovulated rabbit were used as nuclear recipients. The nuclear donors were Capra ibex somatic cells with different proliferative status: population doubling time (PDL)=15±2 (group 1), 35±2 (group 2), 55±2 (group 3) and 70±2 (group 4). Oocytes reconstructed with electrical pulses (2.1 kV/cm, 10 μs, 2 times) were activated (1.4 kV, 20 μs, 2 times) and then cultured in Medium199 containing 10% fetal bovine serum at 38.5 °C, 5% CO2 in air. In groups 1, 2, 3 and 4, the fusion rates were 35.83%, 66.03%, 65.40% and 35.35%, respectively. Similar cleavage rates were observed among the four groups. However, the developmental potential to morula/blastocyst from early nuclear donor embryos (16.42%/10.45%) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in terminal donor embryos (9.52%/3.81%). Polymerase chain reaction analysis of the mitochondrial (mt) DNA cytb gene demonstrated that mtDNAs from ibex and rabbit could be detected at various developmental stages before implantation. In conclusion, our results provide some original information about rescuing Capra ibex using the iSCNT technique. These results indicate that: (1) enucleated rabbit oocytes make Capra ibex fibroblast nuclei reprogramme; (2) the proliferative status of donor cells affects the efficiency of iSCNT; and (3) rabbit ooplasm rescues the donor-derived mtDNAs, resulting in mtDNA heteroplasmy before implantation.
Effect of some factors on the fusion rate of bovine–rabbit interspecies reconstructed eggs

Tests were conducted to highlight the effects of donor cell treatment (bovine G0- and non-G0 phase somatic cells refrigerated for 1–5 or 12–14 days at 4°C), fusion solution (with or without cytochalasin B) and age of the rabbit (young, 3–5-months old; or multiparous, 10–12 months old) as oocyte donor on the fusion and mortality rates of bovine–rabbit interspecies reconstructed eggs. Results showed that there were no significant differences (P>0.05) in fusion and mortality rates of eggs reconstructed with G0 cells or non-G0 cells as nuclear donor somatic cells. The same was also true when nuclear donor somatic cells (G0 cells or non-G0 cells) were treated at low temperature (4°C) for 1–5 or 12–14 days. The fusion rate of reconstructed eggs did not change significantly (P>0.05) when adding cytochalasin B into the fusion solution, but the mortality rate increased significantly (P<0.05). No significant effect (P>0.05) was found in fusion rate of the eggs reconstructed with young rabbits' and multiparous rabbits' oocytes as recipient, but the mortality rate decreased significantly (P<0.01) for young rabbit oocytes compared with multiparous rabbit ones.
