Until recently, the influence of basal liquid water on the evolution of buried glaciers in Mars' mid latitudes was assumed to be negligible because the latter stages of Mars' Amazonian period (3 Ga to present) have long been thought to have been similarly cold and dry to today. Recent identifications of several landforms interpreted as eskers associated with these young (100s Ma) glaciers calls this assumption into doubt. They indicate basal melting (at least locally and transiently) of their parent glaciers. Although rare, they demonstrate a more complex mid-to-late Amazonian environment than was previously understood. Here, we discuss several open questions posed by the existence of glacier-linked eskers on Mars, including on their global-scale abundance and distribution, the drivers and dynamics of melting and drainage, and the fate of meltwater upon reaching the ice margin. Such questions provide rich opportunities for collaboration between the Mars and Earth cryosphere research communities.

Historically near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has enjoyed significant success as the industrial ‘cousin’ of the mid-infrared FTIR spectrometer. Most NIR spectrometers are significantly more rugged than their MIR counterparts, and are therefore suited for use as a QA/QC tool. Sample preparation is trivial or non-existent for most solid-state or liquid samples and data collection is rapid, while still achieving excellent signal to noise. All these factors combine to produce an analytical measurement technology with widespread applicability. Until relatively recently, its capabilities as a microspectroscopy and chemical imaging tool has been largely underutilized. Most NIR spectra have been collected from bulk, not microspectroscopic samples.
Mid-infrared (MIR) microscopy, based on a Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, has been the infrared microspectroscopy technique most readily available up to now. It is a broadly employed chemical identification tool that is used to complement traditional light microscopy.

Optical microscopy has been the workhorse pathological technique, qualitatively differentiating tissue sections by characterizing morphological variations. Vibrational spectroscopic techniques provide quantitative as well as qualitative analytical information that reflects a sample’s biochemical composition and molecular structure. The utility of infrared and Raman techniques for biological characterization has been demonstrated for a variety of applications.[1-4]
FTIR imaging microscopy is a newly developed technique that incorporates the imaging capabilities required for histological procedures with the chemical discrimination of IR spectroscopy.[5-7] The ability to maintain spatial integrity while accessing precise spectroscopic data intrinsic to the sample represents a powerful combination. This technique is much more amenable to analysis by a pathologist than conventional spectroscopy because the data can be presented as images. These images provide direct visualization of a sample’s biochemical heterogeneity.
Vibrational spectroscopic imaging techniques provide excellent sample statistics for the accurate classification of individual spectral signatures because tens of thousands of independent spectra from different spatial locations within the sample are simultaneously recorded.

Conventional Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a workhorse analytical technique providing quantitative and qualitative information on a vast array of materials, ranging from semiconductors to biological samples. By coupling a Michelson interferometer and infrared (IR) microscope to an IR sensitive focal-plane array detector, we have added an imaging component to the existing analytical capabilities of FTIR spectroscopy. This additional capability makes it possible to image the distribution of subtle structural and compositional changes reflected in the infrared spectrum within heterogeneous materials. As such, it is an extremely powerful analytical tool which is currently employed in a variety of basic research and industrial applications. Similarly the utility of FTIR spectroscopy for the investigation of biological materials can be greatly extended by recording spectroscopic imaging data sets instead of single FTIR spectra. This spectroscopic imaging capability, especially when combined with microscopy, ensures that information concerning spatial variations in the system’s biochemistry, as well as its cellular morphology, is maintained.

New instrumental approaches for performing vibrational Raman, near-infrared and mid-infrared spectroscopic imaging microscopy are described. The instruments integrate imaging quality filters such as acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTFs), with visible charge-coupled device (CCD) and infrared focal-plane array detectors. These systems are used in conjunction with infinity-corrected, refractive microscopes for operation in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions and with Cassegrainian reflective optics for operation in the mid-infrared spectral interval. Chemically specific images at moderate spectral resolution (2 nm) and high spatial resolution (1 μm) can be collected rapidly and noninvasively. Image data are presented containing 128 × 128 pixels, although significantly larger format images can be collected in approximately the same time. The instruments can be readily configured for both absorption and reflectance spectroscopies. We present Raman emission images of polystyrene microspheres and a lipid/amino acid mixture and near-infrared images of onion epidermis and a hydrated phospholipid dispersion. Images generated from mid-infrared spectral data are presented for a KBr disk containing nonhomogeneous domains of lipid and for 50-μm slices of monkey cerebellum. These are the first results illustrating the use of infrared focal-plane array detectors as chemically specific spectroscopic imaging devices and demonstrating their application in biomolecular areas. Extensions and future applications of the various vibrational spectroscopic imaging techniques are discussed.
