The relationship between the stable C-isotope composition of the soil environment and modern climate and vegetation was determined empirically along a present-day climatic transect in the eastern Mojave Desert. The δ13C of the soil CO2 and carbonates decreased with increasing elevation and plant density, even though plant assemblages at all elevations were isotopically similar. Several factors, including differences in the ratios of pedogenic of limestone calcite and differences in past vegetation, were considered as explanations of this trend, However, it appears that in the sparsely vegetated Mojave Desert, the δ13C of pedogenic carbonate is controlled by differences in plant density and biological activity. This relationship may provide a tool for assessing past vegetational densities, as long as the vegetation is isotopically homogeneous.

Previous research has established a relationship between children's language development and their behaviour. The aim of the present study was to determine whether children's language ability influenced the degree to which their behaviour changed following participation in the PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) curriculum. Participants were 86 pre-primary children who attended two mainstream schools in regional Western Australia. Analyses of pre- and post-intervention behaviour and language measures found PATHS to be effective for improving the behaviour and social skills of children with language difficulties. Changes in children with better language skills showed a positive but non-significant trend. Although a relationship was found between children's general language skills and their behaviour at pre-intervention, changes observed in behaviour were not accompanied by changes in language skills at post-intervention.

The role of the subject leader, or co-ordinator, in the primary school has evolved considerably over recent years. Ultimately, responsibility for individual subjects remains with the headteacher and governors, but much work has been increasingly devolved, at least theoretically, to subject leaders. In this role they need to demonstrate the ability to be both leaders and managers. Whilst some aspects of leadership and management are generic, others may be specific to the subject and type of school. Through interviews with three subject leaders in schools where music is judged to be successful, this article examines their roles from a leadership and management perspective within the context of the existing primary school (3–11 years) structure. The tentative conclusion is that music is different and may need special considerations in equipping subject leaders to work effectively within this type of school.

We report a study of dynamic cracking in a silicon single crystal in which the ReaxFF reactive force field is used for about 3,000 atoms near the crack tip while the other 100,000 atoms of the model system are described with a simple nonreactive force field. The ReaxFF is completely derived from quantum mechanical calculations of simple silicon systems without any empirical parameters. This model has been successfully used to study crack dynamics in silicon, capable of reproducing key experimental results such as orientation dependence of crack dynamics (Buehler et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 2006). In this article, we focus on crack speeds as a function of loading and crack propagation mechanisms. We find that the steady state crack speed does not increase continuously with applied load, but instead jumps to a finite value immediately after the critical load, followed by a regime of slow increase. Our results quantitatively reproduce experimental observations of crack speeds during fracture in silicon along the (111) planes, confirming the existence of lattice trapping effects. We observe similar effects in the (110) crack direction.

We were members of a support group for women psychiatrists which we found rewarding and which stimulated us to question many assumptions. We describe our experiences in the hope that trainees and consultants alike will consider the potential of similar groups in their own working lives.
