We explore some of the risks related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) from an actuarial perspective based on research from a transregional industry focus group. We aim to define the key gaps and challenges faced when implementing and utilising modern modelling techniques within traditional actuarial tasks from a risk perspective and in the context of professional standards and regulations. We explore best practice guidelines to attempt to define an ideal approach and propose potential next steps to help reach the ideal approach. We aim to focus on the considerations, initially from a traditional actuarial perspective and then, if relevant, consider some implications for non-traditional actuarial work, by way of examples. The examples are not intended to be exhaustive. The group considered potential issues and challenges of using AI, related to the following key themes:
Ethical
○ Bias, fairness, and discrimination
○ Individualisation of risk assessment
○ Public interest
Professional
○ Interpretability and explainability
○ Transparency, reproducibility, and replicability
○ Validation and governance
Lack of relevant skills available
Wider themes
This paper aims to provide observations that could help inform industry and professional guidelines or discussion or to support industry practitioners. It is not intended to replace current regulation, actuarial standards, or guidelines. The paper is aimed at an actuarial and insurance technical audience, specifically those who are utilising or developing AI, and actuarial industry bodies.

Background
Identifying youths most at risk to COVID-19-related mental illness is essential for the development of effective targeted interventions.
AimsTo compare trajectories of mental health throughout the pandemic in youth with and without prior mental illness and identify those most at risk of COVID-19-related mental illness.
MethodData were collected from individuals aged 18–26 years (N = 669) from two existing cohorts: IMAGEN, a population-based cohort; and ESTRA/STRATIFY, clinical cohorts of individuals with pre-existing diagnoses of mental disorders. Repeated COVID-19 surveys and standardised mental health assessments were used to compare trajectories of mental health symptoms from before the pandemic through to the second lockdown.
ResultsMental health trajectories differed significantly between cohorts. In the population cohort, depression and eating disorder symptoms increased by 33.9% (95% CI 31.78–36.57) and 15.6% (95% CI 15.39–15.68) during the pandemic, respectively. By contrast, these remained high over time in the clinical cohort. Conversely, trajectories of alcohol misuse were similar in both cohorts, decreasing continuously (a 15.2% decrease) during the pandemic. Pre-pandemic symptom severity predicted the observed mental health trajectories in the population cohort. Surprisingly, being relatively healthy predicted increases in depression and eating disorder symptoms and in body mass index. By contrast, those initially at higher risk for depression or eating disorders reported a lasting decrease.
ConclusionsHealthier young people may be at greater risk of developing depressive or eating disorder symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Targeted mental health interventions considering prior diagnostic risk may be warranted to help young people cope with the challenges of psychosocial stress and reduce the associated healthcare burden.

Objective
To develop and validate a child and adolescent version of the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (CTFEQr17) and to assess its psychometric properties and factor structure. We also examined associations between the CTFEQr17 and BMI and food preferences.
DesignA two-phase approach was utilized, employing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
SettingPrimary and secondary schools, UK.
SubjectsIn phase 1, seventy-six children (thirty-nine boys; mean age 12·3 (sd 1·4) years) were interviewed to ascertain their understanding of the original TFEQr21 and to develop accessible and understandable items to create the CTFEQr17. In phase 2, 433 children (230 boys; mean age 12·0 (sd 1·7) years) completed the CTFEQr17 and a food preference questionnaire, a sub-sample (n 253; 131 boys) had their height and weight measured, and forty-five children (twenty-three boys) were interviewed to determine their understanding of the CTFEQr17.
ResultsThe CTFEQr17 showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α=0·85) and the three-factor structure was retained: cognitive restraint (CR), uncontrolled eating (UE) and emotional eating (EE). Qualitative data demonstrated a high level of understanding of the questionnaire (95 %). High CR was found to be significantly associated with a higher body weight, BMI and BMI percentile. High UE and EE scores were related to a preference for high-fat savoury and high-fat sweet foods. The relationships between CTFEQr17, anthropometry and food preferences were stronger for girls than boys.
ConclusionsThe CTFEQr17 is a psychometrically sound questionnaire for use in children and adolescents, and associated with anthropometric and food preference measures.

Objective
To examine the use of vitamin D supplements during infancy among the participants in an international infant feeding trial.
DesignLongitudinal study.
SettingInformation about vitamin D supplementation was collected through a validated FFQ at the age of 2 weeks and monthly between the ages of 1 month and 6 months.
SubjectsInfants (n 2159) with a biological family member affected by type 1 diabetes and with increased human leucocyte antigen-conferred susceptibility to type 1 diabetes from twelve European countries, the USA, Canada and Australia.
ResultsDaily use of vitamin D supplements was common during the first 6 months of life in Northern and Central Europe (>80 % of the infants), with somewhat lower rates observed in Southern Europe (>60 %). In Canada, vitamin D supplementation was more common among exclusively breast-fed than other infants (e.g. 71 % v. 44 % at 6 months of age). Less than 2 % of infants in the USA and Australia received any vitamin D supplementation. Higher gestational age, older maternal age and longer maternal education were study-wide associated with greater use of vitamin D supplements.
ConclusionsMost of the infants received vitamin D supplements during the first 6 months of life in the European countries, whereas in Canada only half and in the USA and Australia very few were given supplementation.

Flux density monitoring data at 2.3 and 8.4 GHz is presented for a sample of 33 southern hemisphere GPS sources, drawn from the 2.7 GHz Parkes survey. This monitoring data, together with VLBI monitoring data, shows that a small fraction of these sources, ∼10%, vary. Their variability falls into several categories: sources whose spectral classification is, at best, ephemeral on a timescale of years; sources with a stable GPS classification that vary, but retain their classification; and a small number of sources that exhibit interstellar scintillation, but that maintain a mean GPS spectrum. Existing data on GPS sources with higher frequency peaks, ≥3 GHz, reveals that many such sources vary. However, the majority of these sources possess a GPS spectrum only during outbursts, and hence should perhaps be classified as ephemeral GPS sources. In addition, significant levels of circular polarisation have been found in a number of GPS sources, both amongst the variables and non-variables. Remarkable amongst these is PKS 1519–273, which possesses strong and variable circular polarisation, and which exhibits IDV in all Stokes parameters.

The intuitive notion of action research — planning with individuals to try something out, studying what happens when the change is implemented, making appropriate revisions, and then trying it again — appeals to researchers interested in using the practical knowledge of the people they study, simultaneously allowing them to develop strong personal connections. This paper provides an overview of action research methods and their potential use in applied social research on aging and the elderly. The first section defines terms and gives examples of action research. The second section reviews work in this field, and the final section presents four questions for gerontologists to consider.

Separate studies of rural and urban Head Start systems tested the hypothesis that an emotion-based prevention program (EBP) would accelerate the development of emotion and social competence and decrease agonistic behavior and potential precursors of psychopathology. In both studies, Head Start centers were randomly assigned to treatment and control/comparison group conditions. In Study 1 (rural community), results of hierarchical linear modeling analyses showed that compared to the control condition (Head Start as usual), EBP produced greater increases in emotion knowledge and emotion regulation and greater decreases in children's negative emotion expressions, aggression, anxious/depressed behavior, and negative peer and adult interactions. In Study 2 (inner city), compared to the established prevention program I Can Problem Solve, EBP led to greater increases in emotion knowledge, emotion regulation, positive emotion expression, and social competence. In Study 2, emotion knowledge mediated the effects of EBP on emotion regulation, and emotion competence (an aggregate of emotion knowledge and emotion regulation) mediated the effects of EBP on social competence.

Summary
This chapter provides the basic cost-effectiveness decision analysis methodology and terminology for carotid imaging. The main focus of economic analyses has been the cost-effectiveness of screening programmes for more than 60% stenosis based on the results of the asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis study (ACAS) trial. The cost-effectiveness analysis model typically starts with the reference case, which would usually be a typical hypothetical patient who has suffered from a minor stroke or a transient ischemic attack. A decision-tree model is essentially a horizontal flow chart that depicts all the decisions, chance events and outcomes that stem from an initial set of imaging options. There have been several studies reporting on the cost-effectiveness of carotid imaging modalities prior to surgery. In asymptomatic patients, cost-effectiveness analysis studies have generally focussed on the cost-effectiveness of screening for the identification of more than 60% stenosis based on the results of the ACAS trial.

Summary
This chapter reviews the current state of conventional digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in contemporary neurovascular imaging practice, including indications, techniques, complications and comparison with noninvasive techniques. The main indication for carotid DSA in current practice remains the evaluation of carotid atherosclerotic disease and accurate measurement of stenosis. Complications related to DSA can be classified as puncture-site-related, contrast-medium-related or neurological. More problematic complications such as pseudoaneurysms or large hematomas requiring surgical intervention are more infrequent. Several mechanisms have been postulated to account for the occurrence of neurological complications. Several established measurement methods are used to quantify the severity of internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis prior to revascularization. The North American symptomatic carotid endarterectomy trial (NASCET) method is most widely used in North America, while the European carotid surgery trial (ECST) method tends to be frequently used in Europe.

Summary
This chapter summarizes the current state of carotid magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and deals with the technical aspects of the various types of MRA, including time-of-flight (TOF), phase-contrast (PC) and contrast-enhanced MRA. TOF MRA can be performed as either multiple 2D single slice acquisitions or as a 3D volumetric flow compensated acquisition. Multiple overlapping thin slab acquisition (MOTSA) method aims to reduce the saturation effect by reducing the thickness of the 3D slabs, but maintains the volume coverage by using multiple slabs. Phase-contrast MRA relies on detecting changes in the phase of blood's transverse magnetization as it moves along a magnetic field gradient. Gadolinium-based contrast agents have been used with TOF MRA in order to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of carotid angiograms. Amongst the various types of MRA available, 2D TOF and PC techniques are suitable for screening but they suffer from a number of technical limitations.

Summary
It is often said that the only constant in life is change – in fact, responding to change might be considered the most fundamental aspect of life. As early as the 1930s, Selye used the term stress to refer to any condition (perceived or real) that threatens homeostasis (Selye, 1952, 1978), or in other words, signals the need for adaptive change. Responses to stress signals are believed to have developed as an alarm system for animals caught in a potentially dangerous situation, and as an activation system for animals faced with a competitive situation. These physiological responses to stress are coordinated by a rapidly responding sympathetic nervous system (SNS), and by a slower but longer-acting second stage involving the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the outer cortex of the adrenal glands (collectively termed the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, or HPA; Lopez, Akil, & Watson, 1999). Restorative biological processes (e.g., digestion, immune function, tissue building) are temporarily suppressed so that energy resources can be mobilized for activity (Sapolsky, Romero, & Munck, 2000). In the extreme, the stress response becomes a stereotypical set of behaviors and physiological reactions initially described by Cannon (1932) as the “fight or flight” response. Generally the physiological reaction returns to baseline levels soon after the offset of stress cues. If a stressful situation is prolonged or inescapable, the initial high state of physiological activation cannot be indefinitely sustained – eventually, exhaustion sets in.
