Summary
On June 26, 2016, American viewers of HBO's Last Week Tonight were suitably amused by the show's English host, John Oliver, soundly mocking the leader of the UK Independence Party, Nigel Farage, for having declared the previous Thursday, June 23 – the date of the Brexit referendum, when British citizens voted to leave the European Union – as the United Kingdom's “Independence Day.” In making this claim, Farage was openly courting a transient wave of popular appeal in an indirect reference to Independence Day: Resurgence, a remake of the award-winning 1996 film starring Bill Pullman, coincidentally released in British cinemas concurrently with the Brexit vote on June 23. Since then, however, and no doubt more in reference to Shakespeare's less ephemeral Henry V, the date came to be seen more as something of a new Saint Crispin's Day – recalling the Battle of Agincourt on October 25, 1415 – and not only in Britain, as one might expect, but also in France.
Indeed, occasional references to the Hundred Years’ War were already commonplace enough in the popular media on both sides of the Channel before the referendum, but this trend was exacerbated in the period leading up to the United Kingdom's formal withdrawal from the EU on January 31, 2020, corroborating the enduring reverberations their shared history of medieval conflict still exerts in the collective memory of both nations. Agincourt in particular is frequently trotted out by both sides, usually with a hint of sardonic humor, whenever a perceived breach between France and the United Kingdom is felt to be opening. For the French, the battle defines the quintessence of perfide Albion – the term of derision that for centuries has been reserved exclusively for what Jose-Alain Fralon and many of his compatriots have called their “most dear enemies,” the British – for the British, however, it represents the day Shakespeare's “happy few” insular underdogs overcame superior French forces on the continent to ensure “the greater share of honor” in their Sceptered Isle.

Starbursts are finite periods of intense star formation (SF) that can dramatically impact the evolutionary state of a galaxy. Recent results suggest that starbursts in dwarf galaxies last longer and are distributed over more of the galaxy than previously thought, with star formation efficiencies (SFEs) comparable to spiral galaxies, much higher than those typical of non-bursting dwarfs. This difference might be explainable if the starburst mode is externally triggered by gravitational interactions with other nearby systems. We present new, sensitive neutral hydrogen observations of 18 starburst dwarf galaxies, which are part of the STARburst IRregular Dwarf Survey (STARBIRDS) and each were mapped with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and/or Parkes Telescope in order to study the low surface brightness gas distributions, a common tracer for tidal interactions.

The tropopause, typically at 16 to 18 km altitude at the lower latitudes, dips down to only 8 km in the polar regions, allowing access to the cold, dry and nonturbulent lower stratosphere by tethered aerostats. These can float as high as 12 km, have long operating lifetimes, and are extremely reliable. In contrast to free-flying balloons, they can stay on station for weeks at a time, and payloads can be safely recovered for maintenance and adjustment and relaunched in a matter of hours. We propose to use such a platform, located first near Fairbanks, Alaska, and later in the Antarctic, to operate a new-technology 4 m telescope with diffraction-limited performance in the near infrared. Thanks to the low ambient temperature (~200 K), thermal emission from the optics is of the same order as that of the zodiacal light in the 2–3 μm band. Since this wavelength interval is the darkest part of the zodiacal light spectrum from optical wavelengths to 100 μm, the combination of high-resolution images and a very dark sky make it the spectral region of choice for observing galaxies, QSOs and clusters of galaxies at the formation epoch of galaxies.

Objective
To assess the relative validity and repeatability of a sixty-four-item FFQ for estimating dietary intake of Zn and its absorption modifiers in Saudi adults. In addition, we used the FFQ to investigate the effect of age and gender on these intakes.
DesignTo assess validity, all participants completed the FFQ (FFQ1) and a 3 d food record. After 1 month, the FFQ was administered for a second time (FFQ2) to assess repeatability.
SettingJeddah, Saudi Arabia.
SubjectsOne hundred males and females aged 20–30 years and 60–70 years participated.
ResultsMean intakes of Zn and protein from FFQ1 were significantly higher than those from the food record while there were no detectable differences between tools for measurement of phytic acid intake. Estimated intakes of Zn, protein and phytate by both approaches were strongly correlated (P<0·001). Bland–Altman analysis showed for protein that the difference in intake as measured by the two methods was similar across the range of intakes while for Zn and phytic acid, the difference increased with increasing mean intake. Zn and protein intakes from FFQ1 and FFQ2 were highly correlated (r>0·68, P<0·001) but were significantly lower at the second measurement (FFQ2). Older adults consumed less Zn and protein compared with young adults. Intakes of all dietary components were lower in females than in males.
ConclusionsThe FFQ developed and tested in the current study demonstrated reasonable relative validity and high repeatability and was capable of detecting differences in intakes between age and gender groups.

A survey of the Milky Way disk and the Magellanic System at the wavelengths of the 21-cm atomic hydrogen (H i) line and three 18-cm lines of the OH molecule will be carried out with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope. The survey will study the distribution of H i emission and absorption with unprecedented angular and velocity resolution, as well as molecular line thermal emission, absorption, and maser lines. The area to be covered includes the Galactic plane (|b| < 10°) at all declinations south of δ = +40°, spanning longitudes 167° through 360°to 79° at b = 0°, plus the entire area of the Magellanic Stream and Clouds, a total of 13 020 deg2. The brightness temperature sensitivity will be very good, typically σT≃ 1 K at resolution 30 arcsec and 1 km s−1. The survey has a wide spectrum of scientific goals, from studies of galaxy evolution to star formation, with particular contributions to understanding stellar wind kinematics, the thermal phases of the interstellar medium, the interaction between gas in the disk and halo, and the dynamical and thermal states of gas at various positions along the Magellanic Stream.

Cahal Tok (Place of Flint) is a limestone rise with some structural evidence, associated with the previously designated LDF Chert Site, close to the ceremonial center of El Pilar. Excavations uncovered evidence that during the Late Classic period, specialized flintknappers produced bifaces, primarily chert axes, at the Cahol Tok locus, first on a cleared limestone shelf then on a prepared cobble platform. Small flakes remained in situ whereas much of the larger debris was deposited to the east off the edge of the platform and into the LDF debitage dump. The identification of a specialized manufacturing locale near the ceremonial precinct of a major center is unusual in Maya archaeology. Central control of an important industry may be implied, although knapping could equally well be organized more independently. We expect that small industrial areas are actually present at most large sites, but may often be difficult to recognize.

Transcriptomic studies are useful for elucidating molecular mechanisms through which changes in nutrient availability produce pleiotropic effects on whole-body and tissue physiology. To further the knowledge of gene-regulatory effects of Zn on tissues important for adult and fetal Zn nutrition, we analysed the responses of human intestinal Caco-2 and placental JAR cells to changes in Zn supply. Analysis of oligonucleotide microarrays demonstrated that, despite the analogous roles of the two tissues in nutrient transfer, different genes respond to changes in Zn availability in intestinal cells compared with placental cells. A number of Fe- and Cu-related genes were identified as targets for regulation by Zn, revealing potential mechanisms underlying reported dietary interactions between Zn and other metals. We established that there are fundamental differences in Zn-regulated transcriptional control in Caco-2 compared with JAR cells. We demonstrated that Zn-induced transcriptional activation of the metallothionein 2A promoter occurs over different, and physiologically relevant, concentration ranges in Caco-2 and JAR cells, indicating that these cell lines sense changes in the extracellular Zn concentration over different ranges. Also, we established that mRNA levels of the Zn-responsive metal response element binding transcription factor (MTF)-1, and its homologue MTF-2, are regulated by Zn in Caco-2 but not JAR cells, which may in part underlie differential gene responses to Zn in intestinal and placental cells. The present study identified a number of novel molecular targets that may underlie symptoms associated with deficient or excessive Zn supply and highlighted the necessity of taking account of cell- and tissue-specific processes when investigating Zn-regulated gene expression in mammals.

The Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) offers a coronagraphic imaging mode with angular resolution of 0.026″pixel−1. In combination with with the appropriate subtraction of reference star point spread functions (PSF) the coronagraph is capable of achieving contrast ratios of ∼1000. We present some of the first ACS observations of the optically thin debris disk HD141569A and discuss new results from these observations.

The effect of heating YBa2Cu3Ox in vacuum to 600 °C has been studied using photoelectron spectroscopy and diamagnetic susceptibility measurements. Evidence of two chemically distinct copper and barium species is found in single phase samples at room temperature cleaned by gentle heating at 450 °C. Such annealing also increases the volume diamagnetic susceptibility of the samples which suggests that the preferred stoichiometry of growth does not lead to an optimum superconducting phase. Samples cleaned by vacuum scraping or ion bombardment reveal more amorphous XPS structure and are less indicative of bulk properties.

Nicole and Fitzgerald's assumption in 1932 that the Wassermann test had at last passed to rest in the limbo of historically interesting experiments can hardly be said to be correct, and the test still remains to-day as the standard method for the sero-diagnosis of syphilis. At the same time the steadily increasing specificity of flocculation tests and their value as ancillary procedures cannot be denied, and the accepted diagnostic ideal is a parallel examination by one of these and by the Wassermann test.
