Imidazolinone herbicides injure currently available commercial field corn cultivars; however, cultivars resistant to these herbicides have been developed. Sicklepod, Texas panicum, and annual morningglory control using AC 263,222 (36 and 72 g ai/ha), imazethapyr (36 and 72 g ai/ha), or nicosulfuron (35 g ai/ha) applied POST at 2,4, and 6 wk after planting were evaluated in imidazolinone-tolerant corn. Studies were conducted at Attapulgus and Plains, Georgia from 1992 through 1993. Nicosulfuron and AC 263,222 at 72 g/ha controlled Texas panicum at least 87% when applied 2 wk after planting. Imazethapyr did not consistently control Texas panicum or sicklepod, regardless of application rate. AC 263,222 at both rates and nicosulfuron controlled sicklepod at least 86% when applied 2 wk after planting; however, later application or application under dry conditions generally resulted in reduced control. All herbicides controlled the entireleaf and pitted morningglory complex at least 84% when applied 2 wk after planting. Imidazolinone-tolerant corn was tolerant to all herbicides, regardless of rate and timing, and generally yielded greater when weeds were controlled early in the season.

The flow behaviour associated with the cooling of an initially quiescent isothermal Newtonian fluid with Prandtl number Pr less than unity in a rectangular container by unsteady natural convection with an imposed lower temperature on vertical sidewalls is investigated by scaling analysis and direct numerical simulation. The flow is dominated by two distinct stages of development. i.e the boundary-layer development stage adjacent to the sidewall and the subsequent cooling-down stage. The first stage can be further divided into a start-up stage, transitional stage, and steady-state stage. The parameters characterizing the flow behaviour are the boundary-layer thickness, the maximum vertical velocity within the boundary layer, the time for the boundary layer to reach the steady state, the Nusselt number across the sidewall at the boundary-layer development stage, the time for the fluid in the container to be fully cooled down, and the average fluid temperature over the whole volume of the container.

Comparisons of numerical and experimental results for transient two-dimensional natural convection initiated by instantaneously heating and cooling the opposing vertical walls of a square cavity containing a stationary and isothermal fluid are presented. The good comparisons indicate that the simulation is capturing the important features of the flow. Several features are identified and discussed in detail; in particular, the presence of travelling wave instabilities on the vertical-wall boundary layers and horizontal intrusions, the existence of a rapid flow divergence in the region of the outflow of the intrusions, and the presence of cavity-scale oscillations, caused by the interaction of the intrusions with the opposing vertical boundary layer. The utilization of both numerical and experimental investigations has allowed a more complete exploitation of the available resources than would have been possible had each been conducted separately.

The thermal boundary layer on the wall of a side-heated cavity at early time is known to exhibit a complex travelling wave during growth to steady state and a similar feature is observed on isolated heated semi-infinite plates. Direct numerical solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations together with a linearized stability analysis are used to study the character of the flow at early time in detail. It is demonstrated that the cavity flow is essentially identical to the plate flow, and that for early time the flow is one-dimensional. Using the stability results it has been possible to accurately describe the form of the observed instability, as well as to reconcile a previously unexplained discrepancy in the speed of development of the flow.

The flow resulting from suddenly heating a semi-infinite, vertical wall immersed in a stationary fluid has been described in the following way: at any fixed position on the plate, the flow is initially described as one-dimensional and unsteady, as though the plate is doubly infinite; at some later time, which depends on the position, a transition occurs in the flow, known as the leading-edge effect (LEE), and the flow becomes two-dimensional and steady. The transition is characterized by the presence of oscillatory behaviour in the flow parameters, and moves with a speed greater than the maximum fluid velocities present in the boundary layer. A stability analysis of the one-dimensional boundary layer flow performed by Armfield & Patterson (1992) showed that the arrival times of the LEE determined by numerical experiment were predicted well by the speed of the fastest travelling waves arising from a perturbation of the initial one-dimensional flow. In this paper, we describe an experimental investigation of the transient behaviour of the boundary layer on a suddenly heated semi-infinite plate for a range of Rayleigh and Prandtl numbers. The experimental results confirm that the arrival times of the LEE at specific locations along the plate, relatively close to the leading edge, are predicted well by the Armfield & Patterson theory. Further, the periods of the oscillations observed following the LEE are consistent with the period of the maximally amplified waves calculated from the stability result. The experiments also confirm the presence of an alternative mechanism for the transition from one-dimensional to two-dimensional flow, which occurs in advance of the arrival of the LEE at positions further from the leading edge.
A Patriotic Landscape: Gettysburg, 1863–1913

The Union and Confederate soldiers who moved south from Gettysburg in July 1863 left behind thousands of fallen comrades, a devastated Pennsylvania landscape, and the basis for one of our most powerful patriotic legends. Almost at once the battle was recognized not merely as a crucial Union victory but also as an event with broader cultural significance. In its bloody way the engagement clearly seemed to have enhanced America's position in the wider sweep of Western experience. “Waterloo Eclipsed!!” announced a headline in the Philadelphia Inquirer three days after the fighting ended. On the same day, a New York Times correspondent, whose eldest son had been mortally wounded at Gettysburg, assured his readers that “there never was better fighting since Thermopylae.” In the years that followed, such comparisons—which contributed to national self-importance—were often repeated, as Americans demonstrated an almost insatiable interest in the three-day struggle and in Abraham Lincoln's two-minute address at the consecration of the Soldiers' National Cemetery.
