We conducted a cross-sectional seroepidemiological study in 2012–2013 to determine the seroprevalence of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in adolescents and adults living in Korea, where varicella vaccination has been recommended universally at age 12–15 months since 2005. Residual serum samples were collected from 1196 healthy adults and adolescents aged ⩾10 years between November 2012 and March 2013. The fluorescent antibody to membrane antigen (FAMA) test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were performed to determine the seroprevalence of VZV. The seroprevalences of VZV were compared between six age groups: 10–19, 20–29, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, and ⩾60 years. The seroprevalence of VZV in the entire study cohort was 99·1% according to the FAMA test and 93·1% as determined by ELISA. The seroprevalences of the six age groups were as follows: 96·0%, 99·5%, 99·5%, 99·5%, 100%, and 100%, respectively, by the FAMA test, and 83·3%, 93·0%, 93·0%, 97·5%, 94·5%, and 97·5%, respectively, by ELISA. Seroprevalence increased significantly with age (P < 0·001); moreover, the seroprevalence in subjects aged 10–19 years was significantly lower than in other age groups (P < 0·001), as measured by both the FAMA test and ELISA. Thus, strategies to increase protective immunity against VZV in teenagers are necessary.

The incidence and severity of Clostridium difficile infections (CDI) have increased in Western countries. However, there are limited data regarding the epidemiology of CDI in Eastern countries. This nationwide study was conducted in 17 hospitals to determine temporal trends in CDI incidence (from 2004 to 2008) in South Korea. The total incidence of CDI in Korea was 1·7 cases/1000 adult admissions in 2004, and 2·7/1000 cases in 2008 (P = 0·028). When analysing the clinical features of 1367 CDI patients diagnosed in 2008, oral metronidazole was effective as a first-line treatment for CDI (61·9%). Relapse rate was 8·9% and complicated CDI was only observed in 3·6%. The incidence of CDI increased significantly in Korea from 2004 to 2008. Although the clinical features were milder than in Western countries, the increasing burden of CDI needs ongoing surveillance systems.

ZnSe epitaxial films have been grown on (100) GaAs by reduced pressure organometallic chemical vapor deposition (OMCVD) from tertiary-butyl(allyl)selenium (tBASe) and dimethylzinc triethylamine adduct (DMZnNEt3) at temperatures of 325-450ΰC. Good surface morphology, film crystallinity and interface quality have been found with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), double crystal X-ray diffraction (DCD) and Rutherford back scattering spectroscopy (RBS). Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) shows negligible carbon concentration (below 5x1017atoms/cm3). Low temperature photoluminescence (PL) exhibits a strong near band-edge emission with a dominant donor-bound peak. Gas-phase pyrolysis of tBASe has been probed at reduced pressure in a molecular beam mass spectrometric system in hydrogen and deuterium carrier gases. The precursor decomposes above 200ΰC by β-hydrogen elimination and by homolysis of the Se-C bonds. High isobutene vs. isobutane ratios (50-100) indicate a predominance of β-hydrogen elimination over homolysis at temperatures below 400ΰC. Diallylselenium is present in the gasphase in low concentrations at temperatures of 200-350ΰC. Diallylselenium, methylallylselenium and dimethyl-selenium have been observed as minor by-products during pyrolysis of co-dosed tBASe and DMZnNEt3. The effect of the retro-ene decomposition pathway of allylselenium reagents on carbon incorporation into ZnSe films is further probed by growth experiments with in situ generated 2-methylpropaneselenal.
