Comparisons between low Reynolds number two-equation models for computation of a shockwave-turbulent-boundary layer interaction

A comparative study is made on the performance of several low Reynolds number k-ε models and the k-ω model in predicting the shockwave-turbulent-boundary layer interaction over a supersonic compression ramp of 16°, 20° and 24° at a Mach numbers of 2.85, 2.79 and 2.84, respectively. The model equations are numerically solved by a higher order upwind scheme with the 3rd order MUSCL type TVD. The computational results reveal that all of the low Reynolds number k-ε models, particularly those employing y+ in their damping functions give erroneously large skin friction in the redeveloping region. It is also interesting to note that the k-ε models, when adjusted and based on DNS data, do not perform better, as expected, than the conventional low Reynolds number k-ε models. The k-ω model which does not adopt a low Reynolds number modification brings about reasonably accurate skin friction, but with a later onset of pressure rise. By recasting the ω equation into the general form of the ε equation, it is inferred that the turbulent cross diffusion term between k and ε is critical to guarantee better performance of the k-ω model for the skin friction prediction in the redeveloping region. Finally, an asymptotic analysis of a fully developed incompressible channel flow, with the k-ε and the k-ω models, reveals that the cross diffusion mechanism inherent in the k-ω model contributes to the better performance of the k-ω model.
Alcohol consumption and persistent infection of high-risk human papillomavirus

Alcohol consumption is a possible co-factor of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) persistence, a major step in cervical carcinogenesis, but the association between alcohol and continuous HPV infection remains unclear. This prospective study identified the association between alcohol consumption and HR-HPV persistence. Overall, 9230 women who underwent screening during 2002–2011 at the National Cancer Center, Korea were analysed in multivariate logistic regression. Current drinkers [odds ratio (OR) 2·49, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·32–4·71] and drinkers for ⩾5 years (OR 2·33, 95% CI 1·17–4·63) had a higher risk of 2-year HR-HPV persistence (HPV positivity for 3 consecutive years) than non-drinkers and drinkers for <5 years, respectively (vs. HPV negativity for 3 consecutive years). A high drinking frequency (⩾twice/week) and a high beer intake (⩾3 glasses/occasion) had higher risks of 1-year (OR 1·80, 95% CI 1·01–3·36) HPV positivity for 2 consecutive years) and 2-year HR-HPV persistence (OR 3·62, 95% CI 1·35–9·75) than non-drinkers. Of the HPV-positive subjects enrolled, drinking habit (OR 2·68, 95% CI 1·10–6·51) and high consumption of beer or soju (⩾2 glasses/occasion; OR 2·90, 95% CI 1·06–7·98) increased the risk of 2-year consecutive or alternate HR-HPV positivity (vs. consecutive HPV negativity). These findings suggest that alcohol consumption might increase the risk of cervical HR-HPV persistence in Korean women.

Objective
To investigate the association of antioxidant intakes from diet and supplements with elevated blood C-reactive protein (CRP) and homocysteine (Hcy) concentrations.
DesignA cross-sectional study. The main exposures were vitamins C and E, carotene, flavonoid and Se intakes from diet and supplements. Elevated blood CRP and Hcy concentrations were the outcome measures.
SettingThe US population and its subgroups.
SubjectsWe included 8335 US adults aged ≥19 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2002.
ResultsIn this US population, the mean serum CRP concentration was 4·14 (95 % CI 3·91, 4·37) mg/l. Intakes of vitamins C and E and carotene were inversely associated with the probability of having serum CRP concentrations >3 mg/l in multivariate logistic regression models. Flavonoid and Se intakes were not associated with the odds of elevated serum CRP concentrations. The mean plasma Hcy concentration was 8·61 (95 % CI 8·48, 8·74) μmol/l. Intakes of vitamins C, E, carotenes and Se were inversely associated with the odds of plasma Hcy concentrations >13 μmol/l after adjusting for covariates. Flavonoid intake was not associated with the chance of elevated plasma Hcy concentrations.
ConclusionsThese results suggest that high antioxidant intake is associated with lower blood concentrations of CRP and Hcy. These inverse associations may be among the potential mechanisms for the beneficial effect of antioxidant intake on CVD risk mediators in observational studies.
Estimation of total antioxidant capacity from diet and supplements in US adults

Given the importance of dietary antioxidants in reducing the risks of chronic diseases, the present study aimed to estimate the intake of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) from diet and dietary supplements of US adults. We utilised the US Department of Agriculture flavonoid and proanthocyanidin databases, dietary supplement data and food consumption data of 4391 US adults aged 19+ years in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2001–2. In order to convert the intake data of individual antioxidant compounds to TAC values, the vitamin C equivalent (VCE) of forty-three antioxidant nutrients measured previously was also applied. Daily TAC averaged 503·3 mg VCE/d (approximately 75 % from diet and 25 % from supplements). The energy-adjusted daily TAC level from diet and supplements was higher in women (except for carotenoids), older adults, Caucasian (except for carotenoids), non-alcohol consumers (for vitamin E and proanthocyanidins), subjects with higher income (except for carotenoids) and higher exercise levels than their counterparts (P < 0·05). TAC was positively associated with daily consumption of fruits and fruit juices, vegetables and vegetable products, beverages, wines and teas (P < 0·001). Teas, dietary supplements, and fruits and fruit juices were the major sources of dietary TAC of the US population (28, 25 and 17 %, respectively), while the contribution of vegetables and vegetable products to TAC was minimal ( < 2 %). The present study indicates that antioxidant intake from various diet and supplements contributes to TAC status. TAC levels are different in sociodemographic subgroups of the US population. The relationship between TAC intake and risks of chronic disease warrants further investigation.

The nutritional status of 23 severely demented patients was compared with that of 23 similarly aged controls in the community. A 3-day weighed intake on all subjects showed lower mean intakes of energy, protein, ascorbic acid and nicotinic acid in the patient group. This group had lower levels of plasma ascorbic acid and red cell folate and of urinary N-methylnicotinamide excretion relative to creatinine. Over a third of both controls and patients had evidence of thiamin deficiency, as judged by a raised percentage erythrocyte transketolase activity. An earlier finding in patients with senile dementia of reduced fasting plasma concentrations of tryptophan was confirmed for total and protein bound fractions. With the possible exception of ascorbic acid, the data could not be explained satisfactorily in terms of intake. It is suggested that the association between the phenomena of ageing, senile dementia and nutritional status merits further investigation.

Selective deposition of Co thin films has been developed to produce Co pattern for TFT gate electrode on glass. We have been carried out by the selective growth of Co films with combination of micro-contact printing and metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) at low temperature below 100°C. In the first step octadecyltrichlorosilane(OTS) layer with polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) stamps was pre-patterned on glass. The patterned OTS area created a hydrophobic surface on glass which can prohibit nucleation and growth of Co films. In the second step a MOCVD Co selective deposition examined the difference of incubation time between OTS coated glass and pure glass.
We optimized Co selective deposition through working pressure, deposition temperature, and gas flow rate ratio. Root mean square (rms) of Co films deposited on glass is 2nm enough to use gate electrode.
OTS pattern was decomposed by UV treatment in the range of 280 and 350nm and then trilayer(n+Si/a-Si/SiNx) was continuously created on the sample which was selectively organized Co gate electrode on glass. We fabricated thin film transistor (TFT) of inverse staggered type using selectively deposited Co gate pattern. Reflectance was used to evaluate incubation time for Co deposition time and AFM was employed to confirm selectivity of Co thin film. The subthreshold slope and on/off current ratio was 0.88 V/decade and 6x106, respectively. The electron field-effect mobility at saturation was 0.35 cm2/Vs for Vd = 9V.
Nitrogen Passivation of the Interface States Near the Conduction Band Edge in 4H-Silicon Carbide

This paper describes the development of a nitrogen-based passivation technique for interface states near the conduction band edge [Dit(Ec)] in 4H-SiC/SiO2. These states have been observed and characterized in several laboratories for n- and p-SiC since their existence was first proposed by Schorner, et al. [1]. The origin of these states remains a point of discussion, but there is now general agreement that these states are largely responsible for the lower channel mobilities that are reported for n-channel, inversion mode 4H-SiC MOSFETs. Over the past year, much attention has been focused on finding methods by which these states can be passivated. The nitrogen passivation process that is described herein is based on post-oxidation, high temperature anneals in nitric oxide. An NO anneal at atmospheric pressure, 1175°C and 200–400sccm for 2hr reduces the interface state density at Ec-E ≅0.1eV in n-4H-SiC by more than one order of magnitude - from > 3×1013 to approximately 2×1012cm−2eV−1. Measurements for passivated MOSFETs yield effective channel mobilities of approximately 30–35cm2/V-s and low field mobilities of around 100cm2/V-s. These mobilities are the highest yet reported for MOSFETs fabricated with thermal oxides on standard 4H-SiC and represent a significant improvement compared to the single digit mobilities commonly reported for 4H inversion mode devices. The reduction in the interface state density is associated with the passivation of carbon cluster states that have energies near the conduction band edge. However, attempts to optimize the the passivation process for both dry and wet thermal oxides do not appear to reduce Dit(Ec) below about 2×1012cm−2eV−1 (compared to approximately 1010cm−2eV−1 for passivated Si/SiO2). This may be an indication that two types of interface states exist in the upper half of the SiC band gap – one type that is amenable to passivation by nitrogen and one that is not. Following NO passivation, the average breakdown field for dry oxides on p-4H-SiC is higher than the average field for wet oxides (7.6MV/cm compared to 7.1MV/cm at room temperature). However, both breakdown fields are lower than the average value of 8.2MV/cm measured for wet oxide layers that were not passivated. The lower breakdown fields can be attributed to donor-like states that appear near the valence band edge during passivation.
Photocurrent Spectroscopy Investigations of Mg-Related Defects Levels in p-Type GaN

The defect levels associated with Mg impurity in p-type GaN films were systematically investigated in terms of doping concentration by photocurrent spectroscopy. Mg-doped GaN samples were grown on sapphire substrate by metal organic chemical vapor deposition and annealed in nitrogen atmosphere at 850 for 10 minutes. At room temperature, PC spectra showed two peaks at 3.31 and 3.15 eV associated with acceptor levels formed at 300 and 142 meV above valence band in as grown samples. But, after the thermal annealing, PC spectra exhibited various additional peaks depending on the Mg concentration. In the GaN samples with Mg concentration around 6 7 1017 cm−3, we have observed PC peaks related to Mg at 3.31 as well as 3.02 eV and carbon acceptor at 3.17 eV. For moderately Mg doped GaN samples, i.e., the hole concentration p=3 4 1017 cm−3, additional peak was observed at around 0.9 eV which can be attributed to defects related to Ga vacancy. For relatively low Mg doped samples whose hole concentrations are 1 2 1017 cm−3, additional broad peak was observed at around 1.3 eV. This peak may be related to the yellow band luminescence. As the Mg concentration is increased, the concentration of Ga vacancies can be reduced because Mg occupies the substitutional site of Ga in GaN lattice. When the hole concentration is above 6 7 1017 cm−3, the yellow luminescence and Ga vacancy related peaks disappeared completely.
Detecting postnatal depression in Chinese women: Validation of the Chinese version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale

Background
We evaluated the utility of the Chinese version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and measured the prevalence of major depression six weeks after confinement among Chinese women in Hong Kong.
MethodA prospective cohort of 145 women completed the EPDS, the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) six weeks after giving birth. They were then assessed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM–III–R, non-patient version (SCID–NP) to establish psychiatric diagnosis. The criterion validity of EPDS was tested against this clinical diagnosis, and the concurrent validity against the GHQ and BDI scores was also evaluated. The internal consistency of the scales was measured by Cronbach's α coefficient.
ResultsThe Chinese EPDS had satisfactory psychometric properties and a cut-off score of 9/10 is recommended for screening depressive illness in a general postnatal population. At six weeks postpartum, 5.5% of the study population suffered from major depression.
ConclusionsThe Chinese EPDS will be useful for screening for postnatal depression.
Correlation of Electrical and Physical Properties of SIMOX BOX Affected by Various Implantation Parameters

The impact of two implant parameters, namely the implant substrate temperature and implant beam current, on the physical and electrical properties of SIMOX buried oxide are investigated. Three implant substrate temperatures, 540 °C, 590 °C, and 640 °C and three beam current, 45 mA, 55 mA, 65 mA, are investigated. Results from thermal conductivity and surface photovoltage measurements show no apparent differences between samples. Results from interface roughness shows a decreasing trend as the substrate temperature and beam current increases. For the samples with different implant temperatures, the high‐field conduction shows an opposite dependence for top‐interface versus substrate injection. This behavior can be explained by the conservation of silicon in the buried oxide. Correlation of surface photovoltage and high‐field conduction shows weak positive dependency while that of interface roughness and high‐field conduction shows dependency only when the sets of temperature variation and beam current variation are decoupled.

We report on the growth of GaN in GSMBE using NH3 as nitrogen source. Special focus will be on the NH3 cracking, where we applied an On Surface Cracking technique (OSC). Using OSC we achieve photoluminescence linewidths as narrow as 5.5meV (5K) and mobilities of 220 cm2/Vs at room temperature.

The effect of hydrogen plasma on the electrical properties of low-temperature-grown GaAs (LT-GaAs) is reported. LT-GaAs epitaxial layers, 2μm thick were grown on a <100>, semi-insulating GaAs (SI GaAs) substrate using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) at 300°C. Some of the samples were annealed in- situ at 600°C for 1 hour. These LT-GaAs samples were then subjected to hydrogen plasma at 300°C in a parallel-plate, low-frequency (30KHz) system for varying times up to a maximum of 13 hours. Current through the LT-GaAs layers as a function of voltage (I-V), temperature (I-T), and time (I-t) was measured between two surface contacts formed by thermal evaporation of Au. Evidence of partical defect passivation found in the electrical characteristics of hydrogenated LT GaAs is presented. These include reduced current at low temperature (<210K) and reduced current activation energy at high temperature (>320K).
