Supportive supervision has been shown to improve mental health outcomes and job retention for mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) workers in humanitarian contexts. However, the impact of gender on supervision practices has been poorly evaluated and documented in international guidelines to date. To address this gap, qualitative interviews were conducted with 12 MHPSS staff working in diverse humanitarian contexts to identify key gender considerations in supportive supervision. Results show that gender in supervision is influenced by the context of MHPSS work; with culture, religion and gender roles identified as key elements. Participants discuss recruitment mechanisms, highlighting the unequal gender distribution and inequitable opportunities within MHPSS programming. The importance of addressing power dynamics impacted by gender and of ensuring the safety of women within supervision is also highlighted. Finally, participants discuss the gender differences across the various supervisory formats. Altogether, results indicate that gender has the potential to influence supportive supervision within MHPSS, and it is recommended that international guidelines account for nuances of gender in supportive supervision within humanitarian contexts.

Background
Modern psychometric methods make it possible to eliminate nonperforming items and reduce measurement error. Application of these methods to existing outcome measures can reduce variability in scores, and may increase treatment effect sizes in depression treatment trials.
AimsWe aim to determine whether using confirmatory factor analysis techniques can provide better estimates of the true effects of treatments, by conducting secondary analyses of individual patient data from randomised trials of antidepressant therapies.
MethodWe will access individual patient data from antidepressant treatment trials through Clinicalstudydatarequest.com and Vivli.org, specifically targeting studies that used the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD) as the outcome measure. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analytic approaches will be used to determine pre-treatment (baseline) and post-treatment models of depression, in terms of the number of factors and weighted scores of each item. Differences in the derived factor scores between baseline and outcome measurements will yield an effect size for factor-informed depression change. The difference between the factor-informed effect size and each original trial effect size, calculated with total HRSD-17 scores, will be determined, and the differences modelled with meta-analytic approaches. Risk differences for proportions of patients who achieved remission will also be evaluated. Furthermore, measurement invariance methods will be used to assess potential gender differences.
ConclusionsOur approach will determine whether adopting advanced psychometric analyses can improve precision and better estimate effect sizes in antidepressant treatment trials. The proposed methods could have implications for future trials and other types of studies that use patient-reported outcome measures.

Objective:
Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) have complex unique post-operative care needs. Limited data assess parents’ hospital discharge preparedness and education quality following cardiac surgery. The goals were to identify knowledge gaps in discharge preparedness after congenital heart surgery and to assess the acceptability of an educational mobile application to improve discharge preparedness.
Methods:Telephonic interviews with parents of children with two-ventricle physiology who underwent cardiac surgery 5–7 days post-discharge and in-person interviews with clinicians were conducted. We collected parent and clinician demographics, parent health literacy information and patient clinical data. We analysed interview transcripts using summative content analysis.
Results:We interviewed 26 parents and 6 clinicians. Twenty-two of the 26 (85%) parents felt ready for discharge; 4 of the 6 (67%) clinicians did not feel most parents were ready for discharge. Fifteen of the 26 parents (58%) reported receiving the majority of discharge teaching on the day of discharge. Eight parents did not feel like all of their questions were answered. Most parents (14/26, 54%) preferred visual educational learning aids and could accurately describe important aspects of care. Most parents (23/26, 88%) and all 6 clinicians felt a mobile application for post-operative care education would be helpful.
Conclusions:Most parents received education on the day of discharge and could describe the information they received prior to discharge, although there were some preparedness gaps identified after discharge. Clinicians and parents varied in their perceptions of the readiness for discharge. Most responses suggest that a mobile application for discharge education may be helpful for transition to home.
