Summary
“Leaders stand on the shoulders of those who came before them” (paraphrased from Bernard of Chartres and Isaac Newton among others) and they depend on those around them to hold them up. The evolution of ecosystem science is traced in this chapter from its conceptual beginnings in the late 1500s (and earlier) until now. The importance of “giants” in soil science, botany, chemistry, zoology, and microbiology in establishing the scientific basis for what later would become “ecology” and later yet “ecosystem science” is emphasized. As the science evolved toward the study of the structure and functioning of ecosystems, relying heavily on the systems ecology paradigm and especially as humans became recognized as integral parts thereof, research philosophy and methodology needed to change. Science needed to evolve from individual scientists (giants) with reductionist perspectives to transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary teams of scientists with leaders (often multiple leaders) having holistic, systems thinking perspectives buttressed by cadres of collaborators and technical and administrative supporters, often from many locations nationally and internationally. Now teams are beginning to include social sciences, economists, education and engagement specialists, managers, decision-makers, and other stakeholders.

Objective:
To examine children’s sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) and water intakes in relation to implemented intervention activities across the social ecological model (SEM) during a multilevel community trial.
Design:Children’s Healthy Living was a multilevel, multicomponent community trial that reduced young child obesity (2013–2015). Baseline and 24-month cross-sectional data were analysed from nine intervention arm communities. Implemented intervention activities targeting reduced SSB and increased water consumption were coded by SEM level (child, caregiver, organisation, community and policy). Child SSB and water intakes were assessed by caregiver-completed 2-day dietary records. Multilevel linear regression models examined associations of changes in beverage intakes with activity frequencies at each SEM level.
Setting:US-Affiliated Pacific region.
Participants:Children aged 2–8 years (baseline: n 1343; 24 months: n 1158).
Results:On average (± sd), communities implemented 74 ± 39 SSB and 72 ± 40 water activities. More than 90 % of activities targeted both beverages together. Community-level activities (e.g. social marketing campaign) were most common (61 % of total activities), and child-level activities (e.g. sugar counting game) were least common (4 %). SSB activities across SEM levels were not associated with SSB intake changes. Additional community-level water activities were associated with increased water intake (0·62 ml/d/activity; 95 % CI: 0·09, 1·15) and water-for-SSB substitution (operationalised as SSB minus water: –0·88 ml/d/activity; 95 % CI: –1·72, –0·03). Activities implemented at the organization level (e.g. strengthening preschool wellness guidelines) and policy level (e.g. SSB tax advocacy) also suggested greater water-for-SSB substitution (P < 0·10).
Conclusions:Community-level intervention activities were associated with increased water intake, alone and relative to SSB intake, among young children in the Pacific region.

A national need is to prepare for and respond to accidental or intentional disasters categorized as chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive (CBRNE). These incidents require specific subject-matter expertise, yet have commonalities. We identify 7 core elements comprising CBRNE science that require integration for effective preparedness planning and public health and medical response and recovery. These core elements are (1) basic and clinical sciences, (2) modeling and systems management, (3) planning, (4) response and incident management, (5) recovery and resilience, (6) lessons learned, and (7) continuous improvement. A key feature is the ability of relevant subject matter experts to integrate information into response operations. We propose the CBRNE medical operations science support expert as a professional who (1) understands that CBRNE incidents require an integrated systems approach, (2) understands the key functions and contributions of CBRNE science practitioners, (3) helps direct strategic and tactical CBRNE planning and responses through first-hand experience, and (4) provides advice to senior decision-makers managing response activities. Recognition of both CBRNE science as a distinct competency and the establishment of the CBRNE medical operations science support expert informs the public of the enormous progress made, broadcasts opportunities for new talent, and enhances the sophistication and analytic expertise of senior managers planning for and responding to CBRNE incidents.

The goal of this study was to compare clinical and psycholinguistic approaches to the measurement of verbal behavior according to their ability to discriminate schizophrenic (n = 11) from manic-depressive (n = 11) and normal control (n = 11) subjects. Language samples were obtained during Rorschach testing and analyzed using a clinical measure, the Thought Disorder Index (TDI), and a battery of linguistic measures. Five linguistic categories were examined: productivity, repetition, dysfluency, cohesiveness, and syntactic complexity. On the clinical measure, schizophrenic subjects had high thought disorder scores. On the linguistic measures, the speech of schizophrenics differed significantly from the other two groups in productivity and in the number of clearly referenced elements, a measure of cohesion. This measure of cohesion was positively correlated with TDI scores. The findings are discussed in terms of the benefits of using more objective and quantitative measurements in research on thought disorganization in schizophrenia.

Although there are a number of publications covering records management generically, very few are focused on the challenges for business, and global business in particular, and fewer still on regulatory, legal and governance issues associated with managing records in the global banking and financial sector. This book fills the gap by exploring these complex issues and offers strategies and frameworks to meet the record-keeping challenges to which they give rise in investment banking and other global financial services. While the book focuses on the financial sector, it will also be of relevance to multinational businesses in other sectors, covering as it does the issues that arise from operating across borders and in different jurisdictions. The book is divided into four main parts which cover: regulatory and legal compliance, balancing risk and return, litigation-related issues, and record-keeping approaches. Expert contributors to the book come from Europe, North America and Australasia and include legal, regulatory and technology specialists as well as records managers and archivists. Whilst the book reflects recognized records management principles, the accessible language used will assure its value to information professionals and others without a formal records management background. This book will be essential reading for records managers, archivists and information professionals who manage records in the financial sector. It will also be invaluable for individuals in a wide range of disciplines who rely on records, and their effective management, to meet the increasing number of legal and regulatory obligations to which financial institutions and global businesses are now subject. These include compliance professionals, privacy and data protection officers, risk managers and IT specialists, together with the senior managers, directors and chief operating officers who have ultimate accountability for ensuring compliance and mitigating risk.

Summary
There are few books that address the management of records in the business world and fewer still that discuss records management in the context of global financial markets.
Companies operating in these markets are subject to particular pressures that arise from the need to address the requirements of different financial regulatory bodies across the world; more generally, companies with a global reach need to be aware of, and comply with, the laws of each different jurisdiction in which they operate. Although many of the record-keeping issues that large companies face are similar to those encountered by small and medium-sized businesses and by public sector organizations, these particular pressures are unique to, or especially significant in, the financial sector. The global financial sector encompasses a variety of different types of companies ranging from investment banks and fund managers to hedge funds. The structure of financial markets and the types of companies that operate within them are discussed more fully in Chapter 1 ‘Global financial markets’. For clarity, all of these companies are normally referred to in this book as ‘financial institutions’.
The book focuses on regulatory, legal and governance issues associated with managing records in financial institutions and on records-related risks that financial institutions may face. The purpose of the book is to explore these issues and to offer recommendations for meeting the challenges to which they give rise. The book aims to cover the major record-keeping issues that global financial institutions need to address, and its contributing authors have been selected for their expertise in one or more of these areas. Underpinning the book is a conviction that, if a financial institution is aware of the need for good recordkeeping and takes action to build a sound records management programme, it will be more readily equipped to provide evidence of its decisions and actions, demonstrate compliance and respond to investigations and litigation. If it does not do so, sooner or later a crisis will arise and the institution will face the costs, risks and disruption of having to create large crisis management teams at short notice.
