We show that merger announcement returns account for virtually all of the measured size premium. An empirical proxy for ex ante takeover exposure positively and robustly relates to cross-sectional expected returns. The relation between size and expected returns becomes positive or insignificant, rather than negative, conditional on this takeover characteristic. Asset pricing models that include a factor based on the takeover characteristic outperform otherwise similar models that include the conventional size factor. We conclude that the takeover factor should replace the conventional size factor in benchmark asset pricing models.

Summary
Introduction
We live in an era when ideals of human rights have moved centre stage both politically and ethically. A great deal of energy is expended in promoting their significance for the construction of a better world. But for the most part the concepts circulating do not fundamentally challenge hegemonic liberal and neoliberal market logics, or the dominant modes of legality and state action. We live, after all, in a world in which the rights of private property and the profit rate trump all other notions of rights (Harvey, 2008: 23).
According to scholars such as Harvey, the rights of citizens are being displaced by the rights of the consumer. The renegotiation of rights can be related to the continuous process of spatial capitalist restructuring, which informs and is informed by social, cultural and democratic challenges including calls for ‘justice’ and ‘fairness’, however understood and interpreted. Urban activism has been foregrounded in the global public consciousness, with nok events including, the uprisings culminating in what is now referred to as the Arab Spring and anti-capitalist demonstrations initiated in New York (‘Occupy Wall Street’), which subsequently spread around the world (‘Occupy Movement’). The causes are complex and various, and the objectives diffuse, including revolts against political oppression, social exclusion, and the tyranny of economic liberalism and predatory capitalism. Such movements are helping to reframe the rights of citizens and reenergise debates, particularly at the city scale. They are concerned with spatial justice and fairness and expressed through notions such as the ‘just city’ (Fainstein, 2014).
Drawing inspiration from the renegotiation of the rights of global urban citizens and new theoretical deliberations (Soja, 2010; Fainstein, 2014; Marcuse, 2014), we seek to explore the right of a particular subculture – urban sports activists and specifically skateboarders – to produce space. Skateboarders are often represented by city authorities (including politicians, local government officers, city centre managers, police officers and security guards) as ‘unruly elements’ (Harvey, 2008), which infringe the rights of consumers and do damage to the urban fabric. But, members of urban sports communities – urban sports activists – including skateboarders, free runners and BMX bikers – can also be perceived as producers of urban city space as they reimagine, use, consume and transform cities through distinct spatiotemporal patterns.

At the conclusion of Barack Obama's State of the Union address on January 27, 2010, MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews lavished praise on the president, infamously gushing, “It's interesting: he is post-racial, by appearances. I forgot he was Black tonight for an hour.” According to many, this is the greatest of all Obama's super-powers; the ability to sweet-talk the public into a euphoric political hallucination, transporting followers into a world where he is cleansed of the stain of Blackness and the citizenry lives in racial harmony. If this is true, White voters, including Matthews, forgot Obama was Black long before the State the Union. By many accounts, this post-racial amnesia, rather than the nuts and bolts of voter mobilization, fundraising, message-crafting, or opponents' mistakes, ultimately resulted in Obama's victory in the 2008 election.

Kathryn Takara's “A View from the Academic Edge” is a commendable effort to speak to the unique problems confronted by Black women in academia. Many of the concerns raised by the author are elaborations of arguments made by other Black feminist intellectuals, who highlight the ways in which race and gender intersect to produce experiences that alienate and stigmatize Black women in academic settings. Takara relies heavily on these previous works at times, which may lead some to ask exactly what her original contribution to this body of knowledge is supposed to be. While she defines her primary focus as “the institutional features of the academy which help to explain the particularly bad situation of Black females in the academy,” the greatest strength of the essay is its attention to forms of racism and exclusion that are both institutional and interpersonal. Though the author does not explicitly make this distinction herself, the coexistence and interdependence of both institutional racism and habitual, interpersonal race/gender-based exclusion is what motivates her to write this piece, and it is the need to address both of these areas that makes the message of “A View from the Academic Edge” valuable.

Erica Chito Childs's article “Looking Behind the Stereotypes of the ‘Angry Black Woman’,” published in Gender and Society in 2005, represents an important empirical contribution to studies of interracial intimacy. Black women's voices are routinely marginalized during analyses of interracial dating, and, worse, their real-life experiences and first-person interpretations are replaced by demeaning, racist stereotypes of angry Black womanhood. Childs recognizes this tradition and acts to interrupt the cycle of Black female marginalization and insult through situating Black women in context and presenting their narratives with little interruption and interpretation.

Experimental wet chemical approaches to complex an iron atom with two C60 fullerenes, representing a new molecule, dubbed a “bucky dumbbell,” have been demonstrated. The structure of this molecule has been determined by 13C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Furthermore, this structure has been shown to have unique binding sites for dihydrogen molecules with the technique of temperature programmed desorption (TPD). The new adsorption sites have binding energies that are stronger than that observed for hydrogen physisorbed on planar graphite, but significantly weaker than a chemical C-H bond. Further development of these molecules could make them ideal candidates for onboard vehicular hydrogen storage.

We have recently developed a device to measure resistivity and Seebeck values of a material as a function of temperature over a range of 80K < T < 700K. These measurements overlap in temperature with our existing apparatus (4K < T < 320K). These measurements are necessary for the investigation of potential thermoelectric materials at elevated temperatures, where power generation applications are important. The probe design allows for various types of samples to be evaluated from needle like samples ( L ≈ 2mm, D ≈ 50μm ) to larger pressed pellet samples ( ≈ 2mm × 2mm × 10mm). Separate high temperature cartridge heaters are used to stabilize both the absolute temperature, T, as well as the temperature difference, ΔT. Thermocouples measuring T+ΔT/2 and T-ΔT/2 are also employed to measure sample voltages for resistance and thermoelectric power. Design details and measurement specifics will be discussed. Data taken on standards a well as some research samples will be presented.

The saccules and ampullae of the semicircular canals from human and guinea pig temporal bones were fixed in glutaraldehyde without osmium. Crosslinks were seen between stereocilia of the vestibular hair cells, similar to those previously demonstrated in the guinea pig, although an additional set of crosslinks was displayed: first, horizontal crosslinks were seen between adjacent stereocilia, occupying most of the length of the hair bundle; secondly, a single upward-pointing link ran from the apex of each shorter stereocilium into the shaft of the adjacent taller ster-eocilium; thirdly, an extensive array of horizontal links were demonstrated between stereocilia close to their insertion into the cuticular plate. We suggest that these basal crosslinks support the long vestibular stereocilia rendering them more rigid, and that the upwind pointing crosslinks are responsible for the initiation of sensory transduction.

Human cochleae were fixed in glutaraldehyde, without the use of osmium. Crosslinks were seen between the stereocilia, similar to those we have previously reported for the guinea pig: first, stereocilia of the same row on each hair cell were joined by horizontally-running links; secondly, the shorter stereocilia had pointed tips, each giving rise to a single, vertically-pointing link, which ran upwards to join the adjacent taller stereocilium of the next row. We suggest that distortion of this link is involved in sensory transduction. The links were sparser than had been seen in the guinea pig which may be a reflection of the vulnerability of the links to nonoptimal fixation, and the greater difficulty in producing good fixation in human specimens.
