Objective:
An individual with dementia suffers from cognitive decline affecting not only memory but at least one of the other domains, such as personality, praxis, abstract thought, language, executive functioning, attention, and social skills. Further, the severity of the decline must be significant enough to interfere with daily functions. It is currently unknown whether any of the causes of dementia can be cured. Many challenges confront patients and their families, including a lack of knowledge about dementia and associated treatments; therefore, it is essential to study illness perception regarding dementia-related symptoms in order to improve psychoeducation and lower barriers to seeking assistance. How individuals perceive and make sense of early dementia symptoms can significantly impact their help-seeking behaviors (HS). Exploring illness-perception regarding dementia-related symptoms may contribute to the development of strategies for increasing HS, early diagnosis, and intervention. The objective of this study is to describe aspects of illness perception in cognitively healthy older adults and examine potential correlations with demographic variables, including age, gender, and education.
Participants and Methods:The cohort comprised 55 cognitively healthy older adults enrolled in a study examining Subjective Cognitive Decline. All participants performed > -1.5 SD on clinical neuropsychological testing. Participants were 70% female and 30% male; and self-identified as White = 78%, Black = 16%, Asian = 2%, Other = 4% and Non-Hispanic = 98%. Participants read a short vignette describing a person experiencing significant memory issues representative of an individual with mild dementia and answered seven follow-up questions regarding the cause of memory problems, the likely course of memory problems, and potential treatments for memory problems. Chi-square analyses examined the endorsement of items in relation to age, gender, and education.
Results:When asked about the likely cause of memory problems, 65% of participants endorsed neurologic disease, 53% of participants endorsed normal aging, 26% endorsed stress, 25% endorsed genes, 4% endorsed fate/luck, and 16% endorsed "Don't know" for likely cause of symptoms. 64% of participants responded "will get worse", 18% "will go up and down", 16% "Don't know", and 2% "Other" in response to the progression of memory problems over time. For "Can he do anything to help [memory problems]?", only 2% responded "No" while 76% responded "Yes" and 22% endorsed "Don't know". On a follow-up question regarding ways an individual could improve his cognitive difficulties, 78% "Social Engagement", 73% "Exercise", 64% endorsed "Medication", 48% "Diet", 42% Psychological Treatment", 29% "Rehabilitation", 9%" Don't know" and 15% "Other." Lastly, 58% of participants reported "Independence", 33% "Identity," 4% "Friends," 4% "Respect," and 1% "Don't know" for things he may risk losing due to memory problems. Age, gender, and education were not associated with any of the above responses (p > .05).
Conclusions:Older adults demonstrate a range of ideas about the cause, course, and potential treatment for memory disorders. Understanding how and what factors impact illness perception is a pivotal step in improving illness perception and ultimately narrowing the gap in health disparities and HS. Further work in a large demographically representative sample is needed on illness perception and how socioeconomic factors, ethnicity, and other mediators interact with its impact on HS for dementia-related symptoms.
The Virtual Summer Research Program: supporting future physician-scientists from underrepresented backgrounds

Introduction:
Physician-scientist training programs expect applicants to have had extensive research experience prior to applying. Even at the best of times, this leaves individuals from underserved and underrepresented backgrounds at a competitive disadvantage, especially those remote from major academic centers. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated that disadvantage by closing research laboratories and suspending summer research opportunities.
Methods:The Virtual Summer Research Program (VSRP) was designed to combat this shortfall by helping participating students become better informed and better prepared for applying to MD/DO–PhD programs. 156 participants were recruited from historically black colleges and universities and from national organizations for underrepresented trainees. Participants were paired with medical school faculty members and current MD/DO–PhD students from 35 participating institutions. The program lasted for at least 4 weeks and included a short research project, interactive sessions, journal clubs, social events, and attendance at a regional American Physician Scientists Association conference.
Results:In follow-up surveys, participants reported improvements in their science-related skills and in their confidence in becoming a physician-scientist, applying to training programs, and navigating mentorship relationships. A follow-up study completed one year later indicated that participants felt they had benefited from an enhanced skill set, long-term relationships with their mentors, and connections to the physician-scientist community at large.
Discussion:The results suggest that VSRP met its primary goals, which were to provide a diverse group of trainees with mentors, provide skills and resources for MD/DO–PhD application and matriculation and to support the development of longitudinal relationships between VSRP mentees and APSA. VSRP provides an approach that can be applied at an even larger scale when the constraints caused by a global pandemic have lifted.

Summary
This chapter analyzes the early history of New York’s Harlem, from its Dutch beginnings to its status as an iconic symbol of Black urban modernity in the 1920s. Drawing upon the biographies of W. E. B. Du Bois, Jean Toomer, and George S. Schuyler, and with references to Marcus Garvey, the chapter details the links between Harlem as a Dutch location and its locale as a “Negro Mecca.” It highlights some of the surprising ways in which Harlem Renaissance figures claimed a biographical connection to Dutch New York to illustrate “the Dutch strain in the ancestry of key Harlem Renaissance figures.” The essay focuses on how, in the 1920s, New Negro intellectuals, especially Du Bois, Schuyler, and Toomer, explored what it meant to incorporate Dutchness in their genealogical self-fashioning, and how Marcus Garvey exploited Holland Society-style stagecraft in his rise to power.
Is There a Functional Relation Between Set Shifting and Hyperactivity in Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

Objective:
Replicated evidence indicates that children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) show disproportionate increases in hyperactivity/physical movement when their underdeveloped executive functions are taxed. However, our understanding of hyperactivity’s relation with set shifting is limited, which is surprising given set shifting’s importance as the third core executive function alongside working memory and inhibition. The aim of this study was to experimentally examine the effect of imposing set shifting and inhibition demands on objectively measured activity level in children with and without ADHD.
Method:The current study used a validated experimental manipulation to differentially evoke set shifting, inhibition, and general cognitive demands in a carefully phenotyped sample of children aged 8–13 years with ADHD (n = 43) and without ADHD (n = 34). Activity level was sampled during each task using multiple, high-precision actigraphs; total hyperactivity scores (THS) were calculated.
Results:Results of the 2 × 5 Bayesian ANOVA for hyperactivity revealed strong support for a main effect of task (BF10 = 1.79 × 1018, p < .001, ω2 = .20), such that children upregulated their physical movement in response to general cognitive demands and set shifting demands specifically, but not in response to increased inhibition demands. Importantly, however, this manipulation did not disproportionally increase hyperactivity in ADHD as demonstrated by significant evidence against the task × group interaction (BF01 = 18.21, p = .48, ω2 = .002).
Conclusions:Inhibition demands do not cause children to upregulate their physical activity. Set shifting produces reliable increases in children’s physical movement/hyperactivity over and above the effects of general cognitive demands but cannot specifically explain hyperactivity in children with ADHD.

The present study investigated the effects of different types of recasts and prompts on the rate of repair and spontaneous use of novel vocabulary by eight children with severe motor speech disabilities who used speech-generating technologies to communicate. Data came from 60 transcripts of clinical sessions that were part of a conversation-based intervention designed to teach them pronouns, verbs, and verb inflections. The results showed that, when presented alone, interrogative choice and declarative recasts led to the highest rates of child repair. The results also showed that when children were presented with recasts and prompts to repair, the rate of repair increased. Spontaneous use of linguistic targets was significantly and positively related to conversational sequences where the adult recast was followed by child repair. These findings suggest that using different recast types and prompts to repair may be beneficial for spontaneous use of linguistic targets in this population.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
The Asia-Pacific region is at the forefront of the recovery from the global economic crisis of 2008–09. But despite the region's strong economic fundamentals, major challenges lie ahead in exiting interventions adopted in the crisis and building solid foundations for future growth. There is still ample risk of slow growth and persistent unemployment, reemerging global imbalances, and financial volatility.
The policies that stopped the economic freefall — huge stimulus packages in China, Japan, the United States and even small economies like Singapore, and massive financial bailouts in the West — were urgent, relatively easy to sell politically, and to a large extent forced by circumstances (particularly the fall of Lehman Brothers). They were deployed under extraordinary time pressures and have proved remarkably successful.
But sustained recovery will require tackling different problems, including but not limited to current account imbalances among the United States, China, Japan and other economies. U.S. consumers are not likely to drive world demand in the near future and Asian consumption and investment will have to emerge as new engines of growth. The policies used to fight the crisis, successful as they were in averting a larger calamity, did not directly address this transition and some have been counterproductive from a long-term perspective.
The best outcomes — inclusive, balanced, sustained (IBS) growth — will require shifting the policy mix from crisis intervention to structural reforms. These will need to change economic relationships within economies and among them. The mix will be varied and complex, addressing household and government finances, investment incentives, risk management, infrastructure, productivity, and other fundamental determinants of growth.
The policy mix should also foster new engines of growth in the Asia-Pacific by focusing the region's entrepreneurship, innovation and resources on common priorities. Concerted regional initiatives could, for example, target cleaner and more reliable energy; energy-saving transport and new vehicles; more efficient irrigation; critical public services and social safety nets; and products and services to meet the needs of ageing populations.
