Undersampling biases are common in the optimal stopping literature, especiallyfor economic full choice problems. Among these kinds of number-based studies,the moments of the distribution of values that generates the options (i.e., thegenerating distribution) seem to influence participants’ sampling rate.However, a recent study reported an oversampling bias on a different kind ofoptimal stopping task: where participants chose potential romantic partners fromimages of faces (Furl et al., 2019). The authors hypothesised that thisoversampling bias might be specific to mate choice. We preregistered thishypothesis and so, here, we test whether sampling rates across differentimage-based decision-making domains a) reflect different over- or undersamplingbiases, or b) depend on the moments of the generating distributions (as shownfor economic number-based tasks). In two studies (N = 208 andN = 96), we found evidence against the preregisteredhypothesis. Participants oversampled to the same degree across domains (comparedto a Bayesian ideal observer model), while their sampling rates depended on thegenerating distribution mean and skewness in a similar way as number-basedparadigms. Moreover, optimality model sampling to some extent depended on thethe skewness of the generating distribution in a similar way to participants. Weconclude that oversampling is not instigated by the mate choice domain and thatsampling rate in image-based paradigms, like number-based paradigms, depends onthe generating distribution.
PaleoRec: A sequential recommender system for the annotation of paleoclimate datasets

Studying past climate variability is fundamental to our understanding of current changes. In the era of Big Data, the value of paleoclimate information critically depends on our ability to analyze large volume of data, which itself hinges on standardization. Standardization also ensures that these datasets are more Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. Building upon efforts from the paleoclimate community to standardize the format, terminology, and reporting of paleoclimate data, this article describes PaleoRec, a recommender system for the annotation of such datasets. The goal is to assist scientists in the annotation task by reducing and ranking relevant entries in a drop-down menu. Scientists can either choose the best option for their metadata or enter the appropriate information manually. PaleoRec aims to reduce the time to science while ensuring adherence to community standards. PaleoRec is a type of sequential recommender system based on a recurrent neural network that takes into consideration the short-term interest of a user in a particular dataset. The model was developed using 1996 expert-annotated datasets, resulting in 6,512 sequences. The performance of the algorithm, as measured by the Hit Ratio, varies between 0.7 and 1.0. PaleoRec is currently deployed on a web interface used for the annotation of paleoclimate datasets using emerging community standards.
Reconstructing postglacial hydrologic and environmental change in the eastern Kenai Peninsula lowlands using proxy data and mass balance modeling

Despite extensive paleoenvironmental research on the postglacial history of the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, uncertainties remain regarding the region's deglaciation, vegetation development, and past hydroclimate. To elucidate this complex environmental history, we present new proxy datasets from Hidden and Kelly lakes, located in the eastern Kenai lowlands at the foot of the Kenai Mountains, including sedimentological properties (magnetic susceptibility, organic matter, grain size, and biogenic silica), pollen and macrofossils, diatom assemblages, and diatom oxygen isotopes. We use a simple hydrologic and isotope mass balance model to constrain interpretations of the diatom oxygen isotope data. Results reveal that glacier ice retreated from Hidden Lake's headwaters by ca. 13.1 cal ka BP, and that groundwater was an important component of Kelly Lake's hydrologic budget in the Early Holocene. As the forest developed and the climate became wetter in the Middle to Late Holocene, Kelly Lake reached or exceeded its modern level. In the last ca. 75 years, rising temperature caused rapid changes in biogenic silica content and diatom oxygen isotope values. Our findings demonstrate the utility of mass balance modeling to constrain interpretations of paleolimnologic oxygen isotope data, and that groundwater can exert a strong influence on lake water isotopes, potentially confounding interpretations of regional climate.

Sediments that accumulate in high-latitude lakes serve as valuable environmental archives of changing conditions in a region currently undergoing rapid change. A previously unexplored sedimentary sequence reaching back 16,000 years from Lakes Peters and Schrader (Neruokpuk Lakes) in the northeastern Brooks Range (69°N), Alaska, shows distinct changes in accumulation rates and biophysical properties including bulk density (BD), organic matter (OM) content, and grain-size distribution at five widely distributed core sites. The oldest sediments contain little OM and accumulated rapidly as glaciers retreated around 15 ka. OM peaked between 12 and 10 ka along with Northern Hemisphere summer insolation. BD increased and OM decreased until around 5 ka, possibly reflecting a decrease in river-transported terrestrial OM. From 5–2 ka, OM consistently increased, suggesting a rise in river discharge, or a rise in summer temperatures, which led to higher productivity, or both. After 2 ka, sediments increased in BD and decreased in OM, suggesting glacier growth. Evidence for glacier expansion late during the Little Ice Age is weak, but increased sedimentation rates may reflect glacier retreat during the last century. This study provides a framework for future paleoenvironmental research of a rare archive in a relatively pristine Arctic setting.

Consider the class of graphs on n vertices which have maximum degree at most 1/2n−1+τ, where τ [ges ] −n1/2+ε for sufficiently small ε > 0. We find an asymptotic formula for the number of such graphs and show that their number of edges has a normal distribution whose parameters we determine. We also show that expectations of random variables on the degree sequences of such graphs can often be estimated using a model based on truncated binomial distributions.
