Objective:
One common concern amongst the aging population is that of worsening memory. Speed of processing and executive functions are also areas of age-related decline that affect daily living. Lifestyle modifications such as diet, exercise, and sleep have garnered intense interest as potential methods to prevent or delay cognitive decline. Among dietary factors, omega-3 fatty acids (FAs) have been documented as containing a myriad of health benefits, including neuroprotective effects. The aim of this study is to examine the associations between omega-3 FAs, cognitive function, and neuroanatomical regions of interest in a healthy aging population.
Participants and Methods:Adults aged 65 and older (n=40, 48.9% Female) were recruited for the Loma Linda University Adventist Health Study-2 Cognitive and Neuroimaging Substudy. Participants had a mean age of 76.25 years (SD=8.29), 16.78 years of education (SD=2.53), and were predominantly White (85.0%). Participants received a two-hour neurocognitive battery, including measures of immediate and delayed memory (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, RAVLT; WMS-IV Logical Memory, LM), processing speed (Stroop), and executive functions (Stroop Color/Word). Participants underwent brain imaging on a 3T Siemens MRI, including a 3D T1-weighted MPRAGE sequence. Cortical reconstruction and volumetric segmentation were performed using FreeSurfer software. Blood samples were collected for fatty acid analysis. Individual FAs were expressed as a percent of total FAs. An omega-3 index was constructed as the sum of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) FAs. Correlational analyses, controlling for age, sex, and education, investigated relationships between omega-3 levels (individual and index) and (a) cognitive function (immediate and delayed memory, processing speed, executive functions), and (b) brain volumes in specific regions of interest (hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, frontal pole, white matter).
Results:EPA was significantly positively correlated with Stroop Color (r=.34, p=.048). Although not statistically significant, trends were observed between the omega-3 index and Stroop Color (r=.30, p=.08), and between both DHA and the omega-3 index with RAVLT – delayed recall (r=.29, p=.095; r=.30, p=.08, respectively). With regards to regional brain volumes, EPA and the omega-3 index were both significantly positively correlated with the entorhinal cortex (r=.34, p=.041; r=.41, p=.01, respectively) and white matter volume (r=.36, p=.028; r=.34, p=.038, respectively). DHA was significantly positively correlated with white matter volume (r=.34, p=.044).
Conclusions:Blood levels of EPA were positively correlated with a measure of processing speed, and trends were observed between DHA, the omega-3 index and[GN1] verbal memory, and between the omega-3 index and processing speed. We also found that omega-3 FA values were associated with greater brain volume in the entorhinal cortex and white matter in our sample of healthy older adults. Atrophy of the entorhinal cortex has been associated with pathological processes. Additionally, white matter is known to effect processing speed. These findings may offer support for the idea that omega-3 FAs exert their neuroprotective effects by fortifying areas of the brain, specifically the entorhinal cortex and white matter, that promote maintenance of cognitive function in late life.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has had profound consequences on collective mental health and well-being, and yet, older adults appear better off than younger adults. The current study examined mental health impacts of the pandemic across adult age groups in a large sample (n = 5,320) of Canadians using multiple hierarchical regression analyses. Results suggest older adults are experiencing better mental health and more social connectedness relative to younger adults. Loneliness predicted negative mental health outcomes across all age groups, while the negative association between social support and mental health was only significant at average and high levels of loneliness in the 65–69 age group. Results point towards differential mental health impacts of the pandemic across adult age groups and indicate that loneliness and social support may be key intervention targets during the COVID-19 pandemic. Future research should further examine mechanisms of resiliency among older Canadian adults during the pandemic.

Even though galactic winds are common in galaxies with starbursts or active galactic nuclei (AGN), the role of such gas flows in galaxy evolution remains uncertain. Here we examine how winds vary along a likely evolutionary sequence connecting starburst to post-starburst to quiescent galaxies. To detect the interstellar medium and measure its bulk flows, we examine the residual Na D absorption line doublet after the stellar contribution has been removed from each galaxy’s spectrum. We discover that outflows diminish along this sequence, i.e., as star formation ends. We then focus on the wind behavior within the post-starburst sample, for which we have measured the time elapsed since the starburst ended (post-burst age) via detailed modeling of their star formation histories (French et al.2018). Even within our post-starburst sample, the fraction of galaxies with significant winds and the average wind velocities decrease with post-burst age after controlling for stellar mass.

The plasticity of body-centered cubic (bcc) metals is dependent of temperature as well as sample dimension at the micrometer scale, but the effects of cryogenic temperature on the plasticity and the related failure process in micron-sized bcc metals have not been studied under uniaxial tension. In this work, we utilized in situ cryogenic micro-tensile tests, transmission electron microscopy, and dislocation dynamic simulations to examine the plasticity and failure processes of [001]-oriented bcc niobium micropillars. Our study reveals that a strong suppression of cross-slip at low temperatures prevents dislocation multiplication and leads to a dislocation starvation state, at which no mobile dislocation exists due to the rapid annihilation of dislocations at free surfaces. New dislocations are then nucleated until stress concentration at a slip step creates a micro-crack, the propagation of which leads to catastrophic failure. This unique failure process results from the combined effects of sample dimension and temperature.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop a decision support tool to assess the potential benefits and costs of new healthcare interventions.
Methods: The Canadian Partnership Against Cancer (CPAC) commissioned the development of a Cancer Risk Management Model (CRMM)—a computer microsimulation model that simulates individual lives one at a time, from birth to death, taking account of Canadian demographic and labor force characteristics, risk factor exposures, and health histories. Information from all the simulated lives is combined to produce aggregate measures of health outcomes for the population or for particular subpopulations.
Results: The CRMM can project the population health and economic impacts of cancer control programs in Canada and the impacts of major risk factors, cancer prevention, and screening programs and new cancer treatments on population health and costs to the healthcare system. It estimates both the direct costs of medical care, as well as lost earnings and impacts on tax revenues. The lung and colorectal modules are available through the CPAC Web site (www.cancerview.ca/cancerrriskmanagement) to registered users where structured scenarios can be explored for their projected impacts. Advanced users will be able to specify new scenarios or change existing modules by varying input parameters or by accessing open source code. Model development is now being extended to cervical and breast cancers.

Background: Previous studies of self-practice/self-reflection (SP/SR) CBT training have found that trainees report significant benefits from practising CBT techniques on themselves (self-practice) and reflecting on their experience (self-reflection) as a formal part of their CBT training. However, not all trainees experience the same level of benefit from SP/SR and not all types of training course produce benefits to the same extent. Aims: This paper examines the question: What factors influence trainees’ reported benefit from SP/SR? The aim was to develop a model to maximize the value of SP/SR training. Method: The authors used a grounded theory analysis of four SP/SR training courses, varying along several dimensions, to derive a model that could account for the data. Results: A model was derived comprising of seven elements: Two outcomes – “Experience of Benefit” and “Engagement with the Process” – that mutually influence one another; and five other influencing factors – “Course Structure and Requirements”, “Expectation of Benefit”, “Feeling of Safety with the Process”, “Group Process”, and “Available Personal Resources” – that mediate the impact on Engagement with the Process and Experience of Benefit from SP/SR. Conclusions: A model that provides guidance about the best ways to set up and develop SP/SR programs has been developed. This model may now be subject to empirical testing by trainers and researchers. Implications and recommendations for the design and development of future SP/SR programs are discussed.
