The association between systolic blood pressure variability with depression, cognitive decline and white matter hyperintensities: the 3C Dijon MRI study

Background
Accumulating evidence links blood pressure variability (BPV) with white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and stroke. The longitudinal association between BPV with late onset depression (LOD) and cognitive decline remains unexplored.
MethodsProspective cohort study of 2812 participant's age ⩾65 years (median age 72 years, 63.6% female) without dementia or stroke. Serial clinic visits assessed blood pressure, cognitive function, depression disorder, and depressive symptoms. A brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) substudy was performed in 1275 persons to examine possible associations with WMH.
ResultsThe interaction between symptomatic LOD and systolic BPV was associated with cognitive decline on the Isaac Set Test [slope −4.45; 95% confidence interval (CI) −8.92 to −0.16, p = 0.04], Benton Visual Retention Test (slope −0.89; 95% CI −1.77 to −0.01, p = 0.049), Mini Mental State Examination (slope −1.08; 95% CI −1.86 to −0.30, p = 0.007) and Finger Tapping Test (slope −7.53; 95% CI −13.71 to −1.34, p = 0.017) but not Trail Making Test-A or -B/A. The MRI substudy demonstrated that systolic BPV was associated with cognitive decline via interactions with depression and total WMH volume, but this was not dependent on either deep or periventricular WMH volumes.
ConclusionsThe findings show that the interaction between systolic BPV with symptomatic depression and WMH increases cognitive decline in persons ⩾65 years of age. Future work could extend these findings by examining systolic BPV in relation to cognitive decline and WMH in older populations with depression.
Panic disorder and incident coronary heart disease: a systematic review and meta-regression in 1 131 612 persons and 58 111 cardiac events

Background.
Substantial healthcare resources are devoted to panic disorder (PD) and coronary heart disease (CHD); however, the association between these conditions remains controversial. Our objective was to conduct a systematic review of studies assessing the association between PD, related syndromes, and incident CHD.
Method.Relevant studies were retrieved from Medline, EMBASE, SCOPUS and PsycINFO without restrictions from inception to January 2015 supplemented with hand-searching. We included studies that reported hazard ratios (HR) or sufficient data to calculate the risk ratio and 95% confidence interval (CI) which were pooled using a random-effects model. Studies utilizing self-reported CHD were ineligible. Twelve studies were included comprising 1 131 612 persons and 58 111 incident CHD cases.
Results.PD was associated with the primary incident CHD endpoint [adjusted HR (aHR) 1.47, 95% CI 1.24–1.74, p < 0.00001] even after excluding angina (aHR 1.49, 95% CI 1.22–1.81, p < 0.00001). High to moderate quality evidence suggested an association with incident major adverse cardiac events (MACE; aHR 1.40, 95% CI 1.16–1.69, p = 0.0004) and myocardial infarction (aHR 1.36, 95% CI 1.12–1.66, p = 0.002). The risk for CHD was significant after excluding depression (aHR 1.64, 95% CI 1.45–1.85) and after depression adjustment (aHR 1.38, 95% CI 1.03–1.87). Age, sex, length of follow-up, socioeconomic status and diabetes were sources of heterogeneity in the primary endpoint.
Conclusions.Meta-analysis showed that PD was independently associated with incident CHD, myocardial infarction and MACE; however, reverse causality cannot be ruled out and there was evidence of heterogeneity.

Farming systems in west Asia and north Africa have evolved to cope with the problems of highly variable and, frequently, chronically deficient rainfall. Cereals (mainly wheat and barley) are the dominant arable crops with food legumes (chickpea, lentil and faba bean) occupying only 5 to 10% of the area planted to cereals. Livestock is closely integrated into the farming system and crop production practices often reflect the importance of animals as a major source of income, particularly on the smaller farms. Soils of the region are predominantly calcareous, frequently phosphate deficient, and their depth and texture are important in determining the maximum amount of water that can be stored which, in turn, may determine the effective length of the growing season.
Rain falls mainly during the winter months so that crops must often rely on stored soil moisture when they are growing most rapidly. Analysis of equations relating crop growth and water use shows that there are three ways in which the ‘water use efficiency’ of dry matter production can be increased. First, the amount of dry matter produced per unit of water transpired might be increased; second, if the water supply is limited, the amount of water transpired might be increased relative to evaporation from the soil surface; and third, the total amount of water used might be increased to produce extra growth provided that this results in increased transpiration rather than simply increasing evaporation from the soil surface.
These three possible routes to increased crop growth are reviewed in relation to possible improvements in water management and crop genotypes in the Mediterranean environment. Scope for improving transpiration efficiency is limited although genotypic differences exist and may be useful in the future. More immediately, changes in crop management, such as applications of fertilizer, improved tillage and better weed control, will all increase the amount of water transpired. Application of mulches will also reduce evaporation from the soil surface but crop residues are usually eaten by livestock and are, therefore, often unavailable.
The barley/livestock farming system of west Asia is used as a case study to illustrate how the Fanning Systems Programme of ICARDA has developed on-farm research programmes of direct relevance to current farming systems. Research on experimental sites directed at improving water use efficiency has been developed into on-farm trials and into collaborative trials with the Syrian Soils Directorate.

To examine work-related blood and body fluid exposure (BBFE) among health-care workers (HCWs), to explore potential risk factors and to provide policy suggestions, a 6-year retrospective study of all reported BBFE among HCWs (1998–2003) was conducted in a 430-bed teaching hospital in Australia. Results showed that BBFE reporting was consistent throughout the study period, with medical staff experiencing the highest rate of sharps injury (10·4%). Hollow-bore needles were implicated in 51·7% of all percutaneous injuries. Most incidents occurred during sharps use (40·4%) or after use but before disposal (27·1%). Nursing staff experienced 68·5% of reported mucocutaneous exposure. Many such exposures occurred in the absence of any protective attire (61·1%). This study indicated that emphasis on work practice, attire, disposal systems and education strategies, as well as the use of safety sharps should be employed to reduce work-related injuries among HCWs in Australia.

Electron microscopy has a pivotal role as an analytical tool in pharmaceutical research. However, digital image data have proven to be too large for efficient quantitative analysis. We describe here the development and application of an automated image processing (AIP) program that rapidly quantifies shape measurements of recombinant adenovirus (rAd) obtained from digitized field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) images. The program was written using the macro-recording features within Image-Pro® Plus software. The macro program, which is linked to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, consists of a series of subroutines designed to automatically measure rAd vector objects from the FESEM images. The application and utility of this macro program has enabled us to rapidly and efficiently analyze very large data sets of rAd samples while minimizing operator time.

The numerical action variational method (NAM) is an elegant, non-chaotic technique for calculating the trajectories of gravitating systems in a cosmological context. It has been used extensively for establishing orbits of Local Group galaxies in a series of papers (Peebles 1989, 1990, 1994, 1995) and for the Local Supercluster (Shaya, Peebles, & Tully 1995).
Our repertoir of tools include code that holds present distances constant and predicts possible redshifts, one that holds present redshifts constant and predicts possible distances, and one that varies masses of each mass tracer and simultaneously satisfies both distance and redshift.
Our results indicate a Ω0 = 0.2, a mass-to-light ratio of field galaxies in the range of 100 M⊙/L⊙ in blue light (t0 = 11 Gyr with no cosmological constant), but for the Virgo Cluster, the value is 6 or 7 times higher. The higher values of Ω0 determined from using the IRAS galaxy distributions may be a result of under weighting this important mass component of the universe plus a poor correlation between cluster and field galaxy distributions.

We investigate the effects of Nd:YAG and excimer laser irradiation on the Ge(100) surface under UHV conditions over a temperature range 140 < T(K) < 300 using the surface sensitive probe of He atom diffraction. We study the effects of irradiation on surface damage and order using the apparent (2×1) c(2×4) transition. We monitor surface contamination in situ. The temporal thermal response is modeled theoretically to aid in assessing the experimental results. The capability to maintain a Ge(100) surface at low temperatures free of contamination and well ordered is demonstrated.

The spatial distribution of galaxies in the Local Supercluster, as described at this meeting, together with the measured anisotropy in the microwave background suggest that there exist significant deviations from a uniform Hubble flow in the velocity field of galaxies within a few thousand km/s. In principle, it is not too hard to improve on the uniform flow model: one simply needs to examine the spatial distribution of the radial velocity residuals for many nearby galaxies. In practice, the problem is non-trivial because of the coupling of velocity and distance, and the lack of a distance indicator of high precision, and the “thermal” noise in the velocity field. Our recent efforts in this direction are described in more detail in a paper in a current Astrophysical Journal (Aaronson et al. 1982a).
