Low serum cholesteryl ester-docosahexaenoic acid levels in Alzheimer's disease: a case–control study

Low n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) status may be associated with neuro-degenerative disorders, in particular Alzheimer's disease, which has been associated with poor dietary fish or n-3 PUFA intake, and low docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) status. The present case–control study used an established biomarker of n-3 PUFA intake (serum cholesteryl ester-fatty acid composition) to determine n-3 PUFA status in patients with Alzheimer's disease, who were free-living in the community. All cases fulfilled the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke and Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association criteria for Alzheimer's disease. Detailed neuropsychological testing and neuroimaging established the diagnosis in all cases. The subjects (119 females and twenty-nine males) aged 76·5 (SD 6·6) YEARS HAD A CLINICAL DEMENTIA RATING (CDR) OF 1 (sd 0·62) and a mini mental state examination (MMSE) score of 19·5 (sd 4·8). The control subjects (thirty-six females and nine males) aged 70 (sd 6·0) years were not cognitively impaired (defined as MMSE score <24): they had a mean MMSE score of 28·9 (sd 1·1). Serum cholesteryl ester-eicosapentaenoic acid and DHA levels were significantly lower (P<0·05 and P<0·001 respectively) in all MMSE score quartiles of patients with Alzheimer's disease compared with control values. Serum cholesteryl ester-DHA levels were progressively reduced with severity of clinical dementia. DHA levels did not differ in patients with Alzheimer's disease across age quartiles: all were consistently lower than in control subjects. Step-wise multiple regression analysis showed that cholesteryl ester-DHA and total saturated fatty acid levels were the important determinants of MMSE score and CDR. It remains to be determined whether low DHA status in Alzheimer's disease is a casual factor in the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer's disease.

Summary
ABSTRACT
The Hawaii Imaging Fabry-Perot Interferometer (HIFI) was used to produce a large data cube of the edge-on SBc galaxy NGC 3079 covering Hα + [Nil] λλ6548, 6583. The complete two-dimensional coverage of the Fabry-Perot data allowed us to derive the general flow pattern of the nuclear gas making up the superbubble in this object. Comparisons of our results with the well-known outflows in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 and the starburst galaxy M82 indicate that the mass of entrained material is similar in these three galaxies, but that the kinetic energy involved in the outflow of NGC 3079 is at least an order of magnitude larger than in NGC 1068 and M82. The active nucleus in NGC 3079 is probably powering some of the outflow.
INTRODUCTION
Recent observations suggest that a violent outflow is taking place in the core of the edge-on SB(s)c galaxy NGC 3079. The optical line emission in the nucleus is LINER-like (Heckman 1980), and Hα presents faint, broad wings (Stauffer 1982; Keel 1983) reminiscent of low-luminosity Seyfert 1 galaxies. On closer inspection, however, the line emission responsible for the broad wings in the Hα profile is produced by a complex of extranuclear high-velocity clouds (Heckman, Armus, and Miley 1990 [HAM]; Filippenko and Sargent 1992 [FS]) which coincides in position with a looplike structure first discovered in Hα + [NII] images (Ford et al. 1986).

We have observed the superluminous, infrared galaxy NGC 6240 (z = 0.025) at Ha with the Hawaii Imaging Fabry-Perot Interferometer (HIFI – Bland and Tully 1989). During the past decade, observational evidence from all wavebands indicates that the unusual appearance of NGC 6240 has resulted from a collision between two gas-rich systems, a view which is supported by our spectrophotometnc data. However, the origin of the enormous infrared luminosity (4 × 1011 L0) detected by IRAS remains highly controversial, where opinions differ on the relative roles of large-scale shocks, massive star formation or a buried “active” nucleus. These mechanisms are discussed in the light of our Fabry-Perot observations.

The spatial distribution of galaxies in the Local Supercluster, as described at this meeting, together with the measured anisotropy in the microwave background suggest that there exist significant deviations from a uniform Hubble flow in the velocity field of galaxies within a few thousand km/s. In principle, it is not too hard to improve on the uniform flow model: one simply needs to examine the spatial distribution of the radial velocity residuals for many nearby galaxies. In practice, the problem is non-trivial because of the coupling of velocity and distance, and the lack of a distance indicator of high precision, and the “thermal” noise in the velocity field. Our recent efforts in this direction are described in more detail in a paper in a current Astrophysical Journal (Aaronson et al. 1982a).
