The Mount Mather Creek sodalite-bearing carbohydrothermal breccia dyke is located ~35 km northwest of Golden, British Columbia, Canada, within the Foreland Belt on the eastern side of the Mississippian-to-Devonian British Columbia Alkaline Province. The dyke occurs in situ on the western side of the Mount Mather Creek gully, cropping out over a distance of ~80 m with a thickness of up to 10 m, intruding a syncline of Middle and Upper Cambrian Chancellor Group carbonate rocks. To date, no parental alkaline complex has been found adjacent or proximal to the dyke. The breccia dyke is flow-banded and matrix-supported and consists of host rock clasts, medium- to coarse-grained, anhedral-to-poikilitic carbonate-rich syenite segregations that occur as veins and pods, and fine-grained banded sodalite plus carbonate fragments in a carbonate-rich matrix. The sodalite-carbonate segregations consist dominantly of sodalite, ferroan dolomite, calcite and microcline, with an extensive suite of trace minerals enriched in rare earth elements (REE), Na, Ba and Sr, including albite, analcime, ancylite-(Ce), chabazite-Na, fluorapatite, baryte, barytocalcite, cancrinite, galena, goethite, gonnardite, harmotome, edingtonite, a potentially new Mg-bearing edingtonite-like mineral, natrolite, nordstrandite, pyrite, quintinite and sphalerite. Alteration of the primary silicate–carbonate assemblage has resulted in a secondary assemblage of hydrothermal or carbohydrothermal REE–Ba–Sr–Na phases including albite, analcime, cancrinite, gonnardite and nordstrandite after sodalite, together with complex intergrowths of ancylite-(Ce), barytocalcite, edingtonite, and a potentially-new Mg-bearing edingtonite-like mineral. Remobilisation of Ba and Sr from barytocalcite resulted in crystallisation of late-stage baryte and Sr-rich calcite. Mount Mather Creek is only the fifth Canadian occurrence of the Ba-zeolite, edingtonite, and the second Canadian occurrence of the rare layered double hydroxide quintinite. The Mount Mather Creek breccia is a carbohydrothermal deposit, the product of a low temperature (<450°C), highly evolved, alkaline, SiO2-undersaturated, Na–Ba–REE–Cl-rich, residual carbonated silicate melt whose parental origins remain unknown.

Summary
From Herbert Howells
261. 28th May 1953 Herbert Howells to DMF
Royal Hotel, Bristol
My dear Dora:
Here in Bristol this morning I have read with great concern and very real regret of Hubert's death, and it has come not only with disturbing unexpectedness but with added poignancy in this week of general colour and happiness. I send you and your son and daughter the very genuine sympathy of a fellowmusician to whom Hubert shewed unfailing and most heartening kindness and encouragement right through the years.
My last news of him had been so reassuring. He was, I know, destined for new and important editorial work in a post he w[oul]d have filled brilliantly: and he must have been looking forward to it keenly.
We will all be so sorry it was not to be.
And among countless others I shall bear him in mind with admiration and affection.
You yourself will be much in our sympathetic thoughts.
I beg you not to attempt any acknowledgement of this note.
Yours very sincerely
Herbert Howells
From Gordon Jacob

Pine Cottage, Brockenhurst, Hants.
My dear Dora,
Sidney and I were much shocked to see the announcement of Hubert's death in the Times today.
It seems impossible that such a vital personality should have passed away at such an early age. We quite thought that he had recovered from his illness in a remarkable way. He will be very much missed by the wide circle of friends he made in the course of his varied interests to each of which he brought his always youthful and vivid enthusiasm.
Please accept our deepest sympathy,
Yrs sincerely,
Gordon Jacob
From Dora Powell

Poels, East Grinstead, Sussex
Dear Mrs. Foss
I was so shocked and sad to see today's Times. I am so very sorry – & so sorry for you and all the trouble & anxiety that you must have been through. I have known Mr. Foss for so many years and shall never forget his kindness & encouragement over the 1st edition of my Elgar book by the Oxford Press in 1937.
I doubt if I should have got on so well as I have without his help.

Field trials were conducted in 2005 and 2006 to evaluate application of glyphosate alone or plus the plant growth regulator mepiquat chloride with 20 different insecticides to second-generation glyphosate-resistant cotton at the pinhead square or first bloom growth stages. At 7 DAT, averaged across cotton growth stages and herbicide treatments, combination with insecticides profenofos and methomyl resulted in 5 and 9% plant injury, respectively, and were the only insecticide combinations that resulted in injury greater than glyphosate or glyphosate plus mepiquat chloride applied alone. By 14 DAT, cotton injury was less than 2% for all treatments. Averaged across cotton growth stages and insecticides, addition of mepiquat chloride to glyphosate resulted in a 4 and 6 cm height reduction at 7 and 28 DAT, respectively. Seed cotton yield and percent first harvest were similar for all treatments, indicating that cotton injury and height reductions observed after application did not result in yield reductions or maturity delays. Glyphosate combined with insecticides and mepiquat chloride, in accordance with herbicide labeling for second-generation glyphosate-resistant cotton, offers producers the ability to integrate pest and crop management strategies and reduce application costs with minimal effect on the crop.
Agricultural Conservation Policy at a Crossroads

U.S. agricultural conservation policy has focused on a range of potential policy instruments centered on voluntary approaches tied into Depression-era commodity programs. Entering the twenty-first century, conservation policy is at a crossroads between more coercive regulatory policies, more costly voluntary programs, and more facilitative market-oriented policies. What are the pitfalls, advantages, disadvantages, and tradeoffs along these paths?

Ferromagnetic resonance investigations on Ni nanowires are reported. The angular dependence of the resonance line position is analyzed within a thermodynamic approach that includes shape anisotropy (ellipsoids of revolution), magnetocrystalline anisotropies (cubic and uniaxial), and dipole–dipole interactions. The results are supported by hysteresis loops, obtained on the same sample.

Admissions to hospital following parasuicide in one city over eighteen years exhibit a cyclical variation apparently synchronized with the lunar quarters. The effect would only account for approximately 0·7 out of the average of 46 parasuicides per 100000 adults per lunar cycle (95% CI 0·6–0·8), and fails to reach statistical significance.

The purpose of this study was to assess cardiorespiratory responses to submaximal exercise in patients with univentricular atrioventricular connection after the Fontan operation, and to evaluate whether changes occur during medium-term follow-up. Eighteen patients (age 12.1±5.5 years) underwent graded exercise test on a treadmill 2.3±1.4 year after the Fontan repair. Ventilatory gases were measured using breath-by-breath analysis. Results were compared to gender/age-matched controls. Twelve patients (age 14.2±5.4 years) were reevaluated 2.4±2.1 years after the first test. Aerobic exercise performance was subnormal in all patients during the first test. At the lowest level of exercise, the ventilatory threshold was already surpassed in 6/18 patients, while it was reduced in all other patients (p<0.001). All patients were in stable sinus rhythm throughout the test. Heart rate at all exercise levels was ±10% below normal (p<0.05). The respiratory frequency was increased at all exercise levels (p<0.001). The ventilatory equivalent for oxygen was increased (p<0.001), and the end-tidal tension of carbon dioxide was decreased (p<0.001). The ratio of physiological dead space/tidal volume was increased in all patients (p<0.001), while the normal decrease of this ratio during exercise was not observed. Upon reevaluation heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen uptake, venti latory equivalent for oxygen, end-tidal carbon dioxide tension and physiological dead space did not change signifi cantly. Only a slight further decrease in ventilatory threshold was observed. Aerobic performance after the Fontan procedure ranges widely from just above resting metabolic rate to the lower limit of normal. Dyspnea during exercise is exacerbated by a decreased ventilatory threshold, increased physiological dead space, and decreased respir-atory efficiency. Cardiorespiratory response to exercise, nonetheless, remains relatively stable during medium-term follow-up.

Objective: This study compared medical history and findings on initial clinical examination in Native Americans diagnosed with possible or probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) at Native American satellite clinics of the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center's Alzheimer's Disease Center with those of Whites diagnosed with probable AD at the UT Southwestern Medical Center's Alzheimer's Disease Clinic. Methods: The information reviewed was contained in the database of the UT Southwestern Alzheimer's Disease Center. Results: In relation to Whites, Native Americans had slightly but significantly greater age at onset of symptoms (71.7 vs. 69.6 years, t = −2.08, p = .04) and equivalent cognitive scores at evaluation (Mini-Mental State Exam score = 17.4 vs. 18.5, t = 0.98, p = .33), despite significantly lower educational level (11.4 vs. 13.4 years, t = 5.63, p < .001). Native Americans were more frequently depressed on examination (22.8% vs. 9.5%, χ2 = 12, p = .001) and reported diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease significantly more often than did Whites (p < .01 for all), but their survival time after AD diagnosis was similar to that of Whites despite these comorbidities. Conclusions: With the exception of a greater prevalence of depression and cardiovascular risk factors in Native Americans than in Whites, Native Americans had a course of illness similar to that of Whites.

PRD1 is a ds-DNA bacteriophage from the Tectiviridae family with an unusual structural feature: the viral genome is enclosed by a protein-rich membrane, which is in turn enclosed by an external icosahedral protein shell (capsid). Three-dimensional reconstructions from cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) images have revealed the structure of the PRD1 capsid at moderate resolution (28 Å), while X-ray crystallographic studies have recently provided a high resolution (1.85 Å) picture of the major coat protein, P3. We have now combined these results from different imaging methods to obtain a more detailed understanding of the virion organization. The combination has been made in a cyclic process: a preliminary fitting of the atomic structure of P3 to each one of its independent positions in the cryo-EM maps of the capsids provided initial models that could be used to improve the reconstructions; the refined maps then served as a base frame for an optimized fit. This process allows us to study the viral particle structure at “quasi-atomic” resolution.

A scintillation counter was used to measure chemiluminescence (CL) from milk powder and reconstituted milk. Only a small amount of CL, just above the background level, was observed from powders, but reconstituted milks emitted easily measurable CL. CL from milk was stimulated by exposure to light and found to decline gradually but non-exponentially after the exposure ceased. CL was at a maximum immediately after the milk was reconstituted from milk powder. Without light exposure, CL then declined gradually but non-exponentially over several hours to reach a constant value related to the level of oxidation of the powder. When determined under standard conditions 60 min after reconstitution, CL of milk reconstituted from stored milk powders correlated well with peroxide values and oxidized flavour as assessed by a taste panel.
