In this paper I shall trace Spenser's career in Ireland during the uncertain years, 1584–89, We know that the poet during this period was clerk of the Council of Munster, that he acted as secretary to the president of the province, and that he almost certainly, like his successor Richard Boyle, the Earl of Cork, “attended the Lord President in all his employments.”

In 1923, in an article in Modern Philology on Spenser's handwriting, Mr. H. R. Plomer verified previous identifications of Spenser's secretary hand. He published several photographs and listed sixteen documents, four of which are signed by Spenser. He also noted the distinctive features of Spenser's secretary hand: the sloped writing, the long-drawn-out f and s, the p which looks like an overgrown x, and the individual way of writing the capitals B, I, and E.

Virtually all of Spenser's biographers have assumed that the poet lived in or near Dublin from the time of his going to Ireland as secretary to Lord Grey in 1580 till 1587 or 1588. In this paper I shall explain why data heretofore relied upon are of small value in establishing Spenser's residence near Dublin from 1584 till 1588, and shall advance further evidence, in addition to that brought forth by Mr. Plomer and Mr. Cross in The Life and Correspondence of Lodowick Bryskett, to support the assumption that after 1584 Spenser was Bryskett's deputy as clerk in the Council of Munster. To understand this hypothesis, a survey of the intimate relations between Spenser and Bryskett, as well as their connection with the Sidney family and Lord Grey, is essential.

Any attempt to interpret an allegorical pastoral which was written three hundred years ago is a stimulating but precarious undertaking. Particularly is this true when the author deliberately exercises his ingenuity to make his allegory difficult of interpretation even by his contemporaries. This generalization is especially applicable to Drayton's pastoral allegory, The Shepheards Sirena. Any number of hypotheses may be erected; none, I think, can be completely and satisfactorily substantiated. Replying to my former article, Professor J. William Hebel recognizes this limitation of our knowledge when he remarks: “Possibly we are too far away from The Shepheards Sirena, and have too little information, to arrive at a completely satisfactory interpretation of the dark conceit of the poem.”

Holinshed has heretofore been considered the primary source of Drayton's Battaile of Agincourt. “Its faithfulness to Holinshed,” declares Mr. H. H. Child in his article on Drayton, “brings it frequently into touch with Shakespeare's King Henry Fifth.” Similar is the statement made by Garnett in his edition of the poem:
When his historical authority inspires, Drayton is inspired accordingly; when it is dignified, so is he; with it he soars and sings, with it he also sinks and creeps. Happily the subject is usually picturesque, and old Holinshed at his worst was no contemptible writer.

The Shepheards Sirena, together with the Quest of Cynthia and the Nymphidia, was published in 1627. It is a conventional pastoral, in which is described the rueful condition of the shepherd Dorilus, who is pining over the separation from his beloved nymph, Sirena. While musing upon her absence, he reads a letter of Sirena's, in which she counsels him not to come to her, despite her sore affliction, because the ‘wilde waters’ which separate them would make it extremely hazardous. After reading the letter, Dorilus soliloquizes on his future course of action. While thus occupied, his fellow-shepherds gather round him and sing him one of the songs which he had once sent Sirena, when she lived near the Trent. Instead of driving his care away, the song makes him even more wretched, and he thereupon upbraids his companions for thus mocking his woe. At this juncture, a boisterous swain soundly reproves him for wasting his energies in lamenting the absence of his love, when the call of duty demands that he devote himself to more worthy pursuits. His companion reminds him that it is high time to withstand the inroads of the swineherds. In response to this stirring appeal, Dorilus joins his fellow-shepherds.
