Introduction:
Clinicians with knowledge, skills and attitudes required in austere environments better serve their patients regardless of setting. Few opportunities traditionally exist for medical students to learn about wilderness, disaster medicine, or environmental illness. Events related to climate, disasters, and COVID-19 reinforce the need for physicians to develop tools for practice in resource-limited settings. We created a medical student elective which delivered core content related to wilderness medicine, environmental illness and disaster preparedness and response, along with overarching skills including improvisation, teamwork, and resource allocation.
Method:Content experts partnered with educational design specialists to create a new student experience. We identified key impact areas using an analysis of courses at peer institutions, informal surveys, and published literature. Learning objectives were informed by relevant skills and content, as well as the cross-cutting goal of teaching students to perform in resource-limited settings.
A four-week curriculum was conceptualized, including lectures, workshops and skill sessions, synchronous and asynchronous online experiences, and a five-day backcountry trip focusing on in situ simulation and skills training. The course was offered in May 2021 and May 2022. Students completed post-course surveys regarding the utility of course elements, as well as teaching effectiveness.
Results:Overall satisfaction was 3.64/4.00. Self-reported competence increased in the domains of diagnosis and pathophysiology, treatment, teamwork, and resource management and improvisation. Qualitative data suggested that students are generally under-exposed to wilderness, environmental and disaster content. Self-reported helpfulness of learning activities was greatest for small-group outdoor workshops, and least for large teleconference-based sessions.
Conclusion:Strengths included interactive coursework reflecting teamwork, open access learning modules, and rubric-based assessment structures. Limitations include pandemic-related restrictions in group activities as well as limited objective measurements of knowledge and skills. Future goals include increasing in-person learning, dissemination of the curriculum to larger groups of learning, and development of reproducible performance measures.

Summary
We opened this volume with sobering stories of the dire global challenges before us. Indeed, one would not be hard pressed to find stories of the urgency of our various environmental and social crises. While we wrote this book, the COVID-19 pandemic raged, towns in the Arctic reached unprecedented temperatures, countless hectares of forests fell while fossil fuels continued to be violently extracted from the earth, and Black, Indigenous and people of colour continued to be exploited and oppressed. Yet, despite all this, or rather because of it, we wish to begin our conclusion with hope and determination. Drawing on Solnit (2016), we believe that there is a spaciousness in the uncertainties posed by the challenges before us in that they offer new possibilities for being, thinking and acting – for renewal and purposeful redirection in our trajectory – and it is through a reawakened awareness of our rich and dynamic relationships to place that we can find a better way forward.

Equipment has been designed and tested for ground-based and airborne sounding of temperate glaciers. The transmitter is a free-running pulse generator that uses avalanche-mode transistor breakdown to create high-voltage pulses. The transmit and receive antennas are resistively loaded dipoles; for the airborne system, a twin-lead transmit element and a three-layer coaxial receive element are used on the inboard end of the respective antennas. The sounders are broadband systems; oscilloscopes are used for receivers. The oscilloscope trace is recorded photographically in the ground-based systems. A sampling oscilloscope is used in the airborne system—the sampling process strobes the waveform to audio frequencies so that it can be recorded on magnetic tape. Echoes have been obtained from ice depths of 550 m using the airborne system and about 1 000 m using the ground-based system.

Summary
Executive Summary
Renewable energy (RE) has the potential to play an important and increasing role in achieving ambitious climate mitigation targets. Many RE technologies are increasingly becoming market competitive, although some innovative RE technologies are not yet mature, economic alternatives to non-RE technologies. However, assessing the future role of RE requires not only consideration of the cost and performance of RE technologies, but also an integrative perspective that takes into account the interactions between various forces and the overall systems behaviours.
An increasing number of integrated scenario analyses are available in the published literature. They are able to provide relevant insights into the potential contribution of RE to future energy supplies and climate change mitigation. A review of 164 scenarios from 16 different large-scale integrated models was conducted through an open call. Although a collection of scenarios from the literature does not represent a truly random sample suitable for rigorous statistical analysis, a scenario overview can provide some critical and strategic insights about the role of RE in climate mitigation, in spite of the uncertainties involved.
Although it is not possible to precisely link long-term climate goals and global RE deployment levels, RE deployment significantly increases in the scenarios with ambitious greenhouse gas (GHG) concentration stabilization levels. Ambitious GHG concentration stabilization levels lead on average to higher RE deployment compared to the baseline. However, for any given long-term GHG concentration goal, the scenarios exhibit a wide range of RE deployment levels.

Various electrochemical capacitors (ultracapacitors) are being developed for hybrid vehicles as candidate power assist devices for the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV) fast-response engine. The envisioned primary functions of the ultracapacitor are to level the dynamic power loads on the primary propulsion device and recover available energy from regenerative breaking during off-peak power periods. This paper will present test data from selected U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) supported ultracapacitor projects designed to meet the fast response engine requirements.
This paper will address the temperature dependence of test data obtained from a set of three devices provided from Maxwell Energy Products, Inc. These devices are rated at 2300 F at 2.3 V. Constant-current, constant-power, and self-discharge testing as a function of temperature have been conducted. From these tests were determined the capacitance, equivalent series resistance, specific energy and power, and the self-discharge energy loss factor as a function of the device operating temperature.
