The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) was signed into law in May 2000 to encourage increased trade and investment between the United States and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It provides eligible countries with duty free access to the US market for over 1800 products in addition to those available under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP). The benefits extend through 2025. This study explores the link between US trade preferences under AGOA and beneficiary country exports. Using a large US import database, the study examines the extent to which AGOA influences export performance. It also examines the moderating roles of rule of law and foreign direct investment. The results largely indicate that AGOA has a positive and significant effect on beneficiary country exports. It also shows that rule of law moderates the relationship between AGOA and export performance. We believe that AGOA will target foreign direct investment (FDI) to SSA from other advanced regions such as the EU to take advantage of the US market. However, the role of FDI appears to be weak in moderating the relationship between trade preferences (tariff concessions) and exports from beneficiary countries to the US market.

Objective
This study aimed to examine the impact of COVID-19 on hospice Interdisciplinary team (IDT) members’ self-reported stress and identify possible sources of moral distress.
MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted using Qualtrics to understand the impact of COVID-19 on quality improvement initiative implementation and hospice IDT members’ general and dementia-specific care provision. Directed qualitative content analysis was used to analyze hospice IDT members’ responses from five open-ended survey questions that were indicative of stress and possible moral distress.
ResultsThe final sample consisted of 101 unique respondents and 175 comments analyzed. Three categories related to sources of moral distress based on hospice IDT member survey responses were identified: (1) impact of telehealth, personal protective equipment (PPE), and visit restrictions on relationships; (2) lack of COVID-19-specific skills; and (3) organizational climate. Sources of moral distress were categorized in 40% of all responses analyzed.
Significance of resultsThis study is one of the first to document and confirm evidence of potential stress and moral distress amongst hospice IDT members during COVID-19. It is imperative given the possible negative impact on patient care and clinician well-being, that future research and interventions incorporate mechanisms to support clinicians’ emotional and ethical attunement and support organizations to actively engage in practices that address clinician moral distress resulting from restrictive environments, such as the one necessitated by COVID-19.

Background
The COVID-19 pandemic and mitigation measures are likely to have a marked effect on mental health. It is important to use longitudinal data to improve inferences.
AimsTo quantify the prevalence of depression, anxiety and mental well-being before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, to identify groups at risk of depression and/or anxiety during the pandemic.
MethodData were from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) index generation (n = 2850, mean age 28 years) and parent generation (n = 3720, mean age 59 years), and Generation Scotland (n = 4233, mean age 59 years). Depression was measured with the Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire in ALSPAC and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 in Generation Scotland. Anxiety and mental well-being were measured with the Generalised Anxiety Disorder Assessment-7 and the Short Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale.
ResultsDepression during the pandemic was similar to pre-pandemic levels in the ALSPAC index generation, but those experiencing anxiety had almost doubled, at 24% (95% CI 23–26%) compared with a pre-pandemic level of 13% (95% CI 12–14%). In both studies, anxiety and depression during the pandemic was greater in younger members, women, those with pre-existing mental/physical health conditions and individuals in socioeconomic adversity, even when controlling for pre-pandemic anxiety and depression.
ConclusionsThese results provide evidence for increased anxiety in young people that is coincident with the pandemic. Specific groups are at elevated risk of depression and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is important for planning current mental health provisions and for long-term impact beyond this pandemic.

Summary
Introduction
Our behaviour has a substantial impact on our health. In this chapter, we focus on how behaviour patterns can be changed to prevent and manage illness and promote wellbeing and on how we can identify effective and useful behaviour change interventions. Behaviour patterns that influence health and wellbeing have become topical as evidence accumulates regarding the impact of smoking, alcohol consumption, overeating and sedentary lifestyles on population health and the cost of health services. For example, in England, 64% of the population is overweight or obese, with 25% classified as obese (Public Health England, 2012). By 2050 60% of men, 50% of women and 25% of children are predicted to be obese, having a substantial impact on people's physical and psychological wellbeing (Kushner and Foster, 2000), as well as costing an additional £45.5 billion per year (Butland et al, 2007). Unsurprisingly then, a review of the UK NHS (Wanless, 2002) concluded that national health services would only remain affordable if the population became more engaged in their own healthcare. These concerns have also raised the issue of rationing public health services on the grounds that some interventions may only be effective for those leading ‘healthy’ lifestyles. For example, are hip replacements less effective for obese people? Despite a lack of evidence that this may be the case (Judge et al, 2014) such concerns are having an impact on health services.
Nonetheless, there is clear evidence that key behaviour patterns damage health and decrease longevity. More than 40 years ago, the Alameda County study of health-related behaviour patterns followed 7,000 people over 10 years and showed that amount of sleep, exercise patterns, alcohol consumption, and eating habits predicted mortality (Belloc and Breslow, 1972). Similarly, following 4,886 individuals, Kvaavik et al (2010) found that those who smoked, consumed less than three portions of fruit and vegetables daily, did less than two hours physical activity per week and consumed more than 14 units of alcohol had an all-cause mortality risk equivalent to being 12 years older than those that did none of the above.
Fortunately, interventions to change behaviour can be effective. Reductions in smoking and unsafe sexual behaviour, increases in physical activity, healthy diets, self-care and health screening have all been observed following particular interventions (for example, Greaves et al, 2011; Denford et al, 2013).
