In ‘What's Puzzling Gottlob Frege?’ Michael Thau and Ben Caplan argue that, contrary to the common wisdom, Frege never abandoned his early view that, as he puts it in Begriffsschrift, a Statement of identity ‘expresses the circumstance that two names have the same content’ and thus asserts the existence of a relation between names rather than a relation between (ordinary) objects. The arguments at the beginning of ‘On Sense and Reference’ do, they agree, raise a problem for that view, but, they insist, Frege does not, as the ‘standard’ Interpretation has it, take these arguments to refute it. Rather, they claim, Frege is out to defend (a version of) his earlier view against these objections: indeed, the defense he there offers is pretty much the same defense offered in Begriffsschrift against what are pretty much the same objections.

X-ray CT scans at two different energies of three articulated specimens of Spathelopsis oakvalensis n. sp., a bivalve from the Bluefield Formation of the Mauch Chunk Group (Mississippian, Chesterian) from southeastern West Virginia, permitted observation and description of poorly known internal features of the shell, resulting in a reversal of the shell orientation alleged by past authors and concomitant reassignment of this problematic genus to the palaeotaxodont family Nuculanidae Adams and Adams. Distinctive posterior and anterior gapes in Spathelopsis suggest separation of inhalant and exhalant water streams, a characteristic associated with derived but not primitive palaeotaxodonts.

What is the logical strength of theories of truth? That is: If you take a theory ${\cal T}$ and add a theory of truth to it, how strong is the resulting theory, as compared to ${\cal T}$? Once the question has been properly formulated, the answer turns out to be about as elegant as one could want: At least when ${\cal T}$ is finitely axiomatized theory, theories of truth act more or less as a kind of abstract consistency statement. To prove this result, however, we have to formulate truth-theories somewhat differently from how they have been and instead follow Tarski in ‘disentangling’ syntactic theories from object theories.

FREGE AND THE JUSTIFICATION OF LOGICAL LAWS
In recent work on Frege, one of the most salient issues has been whether he was prepared to make serious use of semantic notions such as reference and truth. Those not familiar with this debate are often surprised to hear of it. Surely, they say, Frege's post-1891 writings are replete with uses of 'true' and 'refers'. But no one wants to deny that Frege makes use of such terms: Rather, what is at issue is how Frege understood them; more precisely, what is at issue is whether Frege employed them for anything like the purposes for which philosophers now employ them. What these purposes are, or should be, is itself a matter of philosophical dispute, and, although I shall discuss some aspects of this issue, my goal here is not to address it directly. My purpose here, rather - one of them, anyway - is to argue that Frege did make very serious use of semantic concepts: In particular, he offered informal mathematical arguments, making use of semantic notions, for semantic claims. For example, he argues that all of the axioms of the Begriffsschrift - the formal system in which he proves the basic laws of arithmetic - are true, that its rules of inference are truth-preserving, and that every well-formed expression in Begriffsschrift has been assigned a reference by the stipulations he makes about the references of its primitive expressions.
Let me say at the outset that Frege was not Tarski and did not produce, as Tarski did, a formal semantic theory, a mathematical definition of truth. But that is not of any significance here. One does not have to provide a formal semantic theory to make serious use of semantic notions. At most, the question is whether Frege would have been prepared to offer such a theory, or whether he would have accepted the sort of theory Tarski provided (or some alternative), had he known of it. On the other hand, the issue is not whether Frege would have accepted Tarski’s theory of truth, or Gödel ’ s proof that first-order logic is complete, as a piece of mathematics; it is whether he would have taken these results to have the kind of significance we (or at least some of us) would ascribe to them. Tarski’s argument in ‘The concept of truth in formalized languages’ shows that all axioms of the calculus of classes are true; the completeness theorem shows that every valid first-order schema is provable in certain formal systems.
Photoconductivity Stability Improvement in Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon by Ultraviolet Illumination

We observe improved photoconductivity stability against light-soaking in hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin films as a result of an ultraviolet (UV) illumination and etch treatment. UV-etch treated samples begins with red-light photoconductivities inferior to that of a control sample which is only etched. After less than an hour of 1 sun red light-soaking, the photoconductivity of the etched-only control falls below that of the UV-etch treated sample. After 2 to 3 days light soaking, the UV-etch films can have a photosensitivity 20 to 38% above their control. We observe no corresponding improvement of defect optical absorption by constant photocurrent method spectroscopy. The UV-etch treatment also produces small improvements in the stabilized open-circuit voltage of Schottky barier solar cells. We speculate that mobile hydrogen produced during UV illumination is penetrating the film and improving stability.

Frege's development of the theory of arithmetic in his Grundgesetze der Arithmetik has long been ignored, since the formal theory of the Grundgesetze is inconsistent. His derivations of the axioms of arithmetic from what is known as Hume's Principle do not, however, depend upon that axiom of the system—Axiom V—which is responsible for the inconsistency. On the contrary, Frege's proofs constitute a derivation of axioms for arithmetic from Hume's Principle, in (axiomatic) second-order logic. Moreover, though Frege does prove each of the now standard Dedekind-Peano axioms, his proofs are devoted primarily to the derivation of his own axioms for arithmetic, which are somewhat different (though of course equivalent). These axioms, which may be yet more intuitive than the Dedekind-Peano axioms, may be taken to be “The Basic Laws of Cardinal Number”, as Frege understood them.
Though the axioms of arithmetic have been known to be derivable from Hume's Principle for about ten years now, it has not been widely recognized that Frege himself showed them so to be; nor has it been known that Frege made use of any axiomatization for arithmetic whatsoever. Grundgesetze is thus a work of much greater significance than has often been thought. First, Frege's use of the inconsistent Axiom V may invalidate certain of his claims regarding the philosophical significance of his work (viz., the establish may invalidate certain of his claims regarding the philosophical significance of his work (viz., the establishment of Logicism), but it should not be allowed to obscure his mathematical accomplishments and his contribution to our understanding of arithmetic. Second, Frege's knowledge that arithmetic is derivable from Hume's Principle raises important sorts of questions about his philosophy of arithmetic. For example, “Why did Frege not simply abandon Axiom V and take Hume's Principle as an axiom?”
