VaTEST III: Validation of eight potential super-earths from TESS data

NASA’s all-sky survey mission, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), is specifically engineered to detect exoplanets that transit bright stars. Thus far, TESS has successfully identified approximately 400 transiting exoplanets, in addition to roughly 6 000 candidate exoplanets pending confirmation. In this study, we present the results of our ongoing project, the Validation of Transiting Exoplanets using Statistical Tools (VaTEST). Our dedicated effort is focused on the confirmation and characterisation of new exoplanets through the application of statistical validation tools. Through a combination of ground-based telescope data, high-resolution imaging, and the utilisation of the statistical validation tool known as TRICERATOPS, we have successfully discovered eight potential super-Earths. These planets bear the designations: TOI-238b (1.61$^{+0.09} _{-0.10}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-771b (1.42$^{+0.11} _{-0.09}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-871b (1.66$^{+0.11} _{-0.11}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-1467b (1.83$^{+0.16} _{-0.15}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-1739b (1.69$^{+0.10} _{-0.08}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-2068b (1.82$^{+0.16} _{-0.15}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-4559b (1.42$^{+0.13} _{-0.11}$ R$_\oplus$), and TOI-5799b (1.62$^{+0.19} _{-0.13}$ R$_\oplus$). Among all these planets, six of them fall within the region known as ‘keystone planets’, which makes them particularly interesting for study. Based on the location of TOI-771b and TOI-4559b below the radius valley we characterised them as likely super-Earths, though radial velocity mass measurements for these planets will provide more details about their characterisation. It is noteworthy that planets within the size range investigated herein are absent from our own solar system, making their study crucial for gaining insights into the evolutionary stages between Earth and Neptune.

Summary
The rocky shores of the north-east Atlantic have been long studied. Our focus is from Gibraltar to Norway plus the Azores and Iceland. Phylogeographic processes shape biogeographic patterns of biodiversity. Long-term and broadscale studies have shown the responses of biota to past climate fluctuations and more recent anthropogenic climate change. Inter- and intra-specific species interactions along sharp local environmental gradients shape distributions and community structure and hence ecosystem functioning. Shifts in domination by fucoids in shelter to barnacles/mussels in exposure are mediated by grazing by patellid limpets. Further south fucoids become increasingly rare, with species disappearing or restricted to estuarine refuges, caused by greater desiccation and grazing pressure. Mesoscale processes influence bottom-up nutrient forcing and larval supply, hence affecting species abundance and distribution, and can be proximate factors setting range edges (e.g., the English Channel, the Iberian Peninsula). Impacts of invasive non-native species are reviewed. Knowledge gaps such as the work on rockpools and host–parasite dynamics are also outlined.

The late Precambrian genus Rangea Gürich, 1929, a frond-like fossil composed of repeated foliate elements, is one of the first discovered forms belonging to the now widely known soft-bodied assemblages characterizing the Ediacaran Period. Rangea occurs together with the genera Pteridinium Gürich, 1933, and Ernietta Pflug, 1966, in the lower parts of the Nama Group, Namibia (South West Africa).
Investigation of the preservation and structure of Rangea, utilizing a methodology similar to that established by Wade (1968, 1971), indicates that it was probably a colonial octocoral consisting of a large tapering primary polyp, or oozoid, and a number of leaf-shaped, conjoined fronds which bore the feeding polyps; it is suggested to belong to a group of early Ediacaran anthozoans which provide a fossil link between the still living Telestacea and Pennatulacea. Similar investigations of Pteridinium and Ernietta disclose that their structure is different from Rangea and does not support ideas that they are related to it.

Two assemblages of organic-walled microfossils have been recognized in drillcore samples from the late Proterozoic Rodda Beds in theeastern Officer Basin, South Australia. The fossils include tube-like remains and large, simple and sculptured acritarchs. Lithostratigraphic studies and seismic information, in conjunction with previous (albeit limited) acritarch finds, allow local correlation of the Rodda Beds with Ediacaran or terminal Proterozoic sequences in the northern Adelaide Fold Belt (site of the nominated Ediacaran stratotype). The new palynofloras are comparable withacritarch assemblages in the Amadeus Basin of central Australia, and suggest tentative correlations with sequences in China and the U.S.S.R. The presence of isotopically heavy marine carbonate in the lower fossiliferous horizons of the Rodda Beds (σ13CPDB = +3 to +6%0) is consistent with isotopic data from the equivalent interval in China. In contrast, the upper fossiliferous strata occur higher in the Rodda Beds where carbonate is significantly lighter (σ13CPDB = -1 to + 3%0).
Identifying important areas for the conservation of dwarf chameleons (Brookesia spp.) in Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, western Madagascar

Many of Madagascar's endemic chameleon species have restricted ranges and require relatively intact forest for survival but information on their response to habitat degradation is generally lacking, especially in western deciduous forests. We assessed the abundance and density of endemic chameleons from nocturnal surveys of roosting animals in Parc National Tsingy de Bemaraha in western Madagascar. We found 444 Brookesia brygooi, 192 B. perarmata, 98 B. exarmata, 22 Furcifer nicosiai and two F. cf. petteri. The highest pooled density was for B. brygooi (53.2 ha-1), followed by B. perarmata (29.2 ha-1) and B. exarmata (18.7 ha-1). B. brygooi was ubiquitous, with the highest density and abundance in the disturbed Ankazomanga forest outside the Park, where the similarly sized B. perarmata was absent. B. perarmata, a species endemic to the Park, was abundant in three of the five survey sites, especially where there was a well-developed leaf litter and understorey. B. exarmata, a species endemic to the Bemaraha plateau, was associated with an open understorey and small protrusions of limestone karst. Spatial variation in the density of B. perarmata is an important consideration when interpreting monitoring data and this species is a conservation priority because of its restricted distribution and apparent sensitivity to forest degradation.
