Herbicide active ingredients, formulation type, ambient temperature, and humidity can influence volatility. A method was developed using volatility chambers to compare relative volatility of different synthetic auxin herbicide formulations in controlled environments. 2,4-D or dicamba acid vapors emanating after application were captured in air-sampling tubes at 24, 48, 72, and 96 h after herbicide application. The 2,4-D or dicamba was extracted from sample tubes and quantified using liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. Volatility from 2,4-D dimethylamine (DMA) was determined to be greater than that of 2,4-D choline in chambers where temperatures were held at 30 or 40 C and relative humidity (RH) was 20% or 50%. Air concentration of 2,4-D DMA was 0.399 µg m−3 at 40 C and 20% RH compared with 0.005 µg m−3 for 2,4-D choline at the same temperature and humidity at 24 h after application. Volatility from 2,4-D DMA and 2,4-D choline increased as temperature increased from 30 to 40 C. However, volatility from 2,4-D choline was lower than observed from 2,4-D DMA. Volatility from 2,4-D choline at 40 C increased from 0.00458 to 0.0263 µg m−3 and from 0.00341 to 0.025 µg m−3 when humidity increased from 20% to 50% at 72 and 96 h after treatment, respectively, whereas, volatility from 2,4-D DMA tended to be higher at 20% RH compared with 50% RH. Air concentration of dicamba diglycolamine was similar at all time points when measured at 40 C and 20% RH. By 96 h after treatment, there was a trend for lower air concentration of dicamba compared with earlier timings. This method using volatility chambers provided good repeatability with low variability across replications, experiments, and herbicides.

A novel type of surface roughness is deployed in a zero-pressure-gradient boundary layer with the goal of delaying the onset of laminar-to-turbulent transition for drag reduction purposes. This proof-of-concept experiment relies on forcing phase-triggered Tollmien–Schlichting (TS) waves across a range of initial amplitudes to produce amplified boundary-layer disturbances in a controlled and repeatable manner. Building on earlier work demonstrating attenuation of forced disturbances and delay of transition with spanwise arrays of discrete roughness and miniature vortex generators (MVGs), the present work seeks a roughness shape which might find success in a wider range of flows. Toward that end, streamwise-elongated humps are regularly spaced in the spanwise direction to form a wavy wall. By direct modulation of the mean flow, growth rates of the forced disturbances are increased or decreased, depending on the roughness configuration. Boundary-layer velocity measurements with hot-wire probes have been performed in a parametric study of the effects of roughness-field geometry and forcing amplitude on TS-wave growth and transition. The roughness field proves detrimental to passive flow control efforts in some configurations, while a reduction in the TS-wave amplitudes compared with the smooth-wall reference case is observed at other conditions. Substantial delays in the onset of transition are demonstrated when TS waves are forced with large amplitudes.

A number of material properties must be optimized before organic electro-optic materials can be used for practical device applications. These include electro-optic activity, optical transparency, and stability including both thermal and photochemical stability. Exploiting an improved understanding of the structure/function relationships, we have recently prepared materials exhibiting electro-optic coefficients of greater than 50 pm/V and optical loss values of less than 0.7 dB/cm at the telecommunication wavelengths of 1.3 and 1.55 microns. When oxygen is excluded to a reasonable extent, long-term photostability to optical power levels of 20 mW has been observed. Photostability is further improved by addition of scavengers and by lattice hardening. Long-term (greater than 1000 hours) thermal stability of poling-induced electro-optic activity is also observed at elevated temperatures (greater than 80°C) when appropriate lattice hardening is used. The successful improvement of organic electro-optic materials rests upon (1) attention to the design of chromophore structure including design to inhibit unwanted intermolecular electrostatic interactions and to improve chromophore instability and (2) attention to processing conditions including those involved in spin casting, electric field poling, and lattice hardening. A particularly attractive new direction has been the exploitation of dendrimer structures and particularly of multi-chromophore containing dendrimer structures. This approach has permitted the simultaneous improvement of all material properties. Development of new materials has facilitated the fabrication of a number of prototype devices and most recently has permitted investigation of the incorporation of electro-optic materials into photonic bandgap and microresonator structures. The latter are relevant to active wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). Significant quality factors (greater than 10,000) have been realized for such devices permitting wavelength discrimination at telecommunication wavelengths of 0.01 nm.

A 59-year-old white male presented with a two-month history of dry cough and shortness of breath. At bronchoscopy, a 1 cm mass on the laryngeal surface of the epiglottis was found. Immunohistochemical stain of the biopsy specimen revealed a monoclonal proliferation of plasma cells. Serological tests revealed normal serum immunoglobulin levels, and a bone marrow aspirate and biopsy was also normal; no abnormalities were found on serum or urine electrophoresis. He received radiotherapy (50 Gy), and was doing well three years following therapy without evidence of disease.

The National Association of Security Dealers alleges that professional-trader use of the Small Order Execution System (SOES) causes greater security price volatility. We document bidirectional Granger causality between a proxy for professional SOES trading (the frequency of maximum-sized SOES trades) and a measure of stock price volatility. We find that high levels of volatility precede high levels of maximum-sized SOES trades, suggesting that volatility causes more frequent large SOES trades. Likewise, over a one-minute time interval, high levels of maximum-sized SOES trades cause high volatility. Over longer periods, however, intense maximum-sized SOES trading causes lower volatility. Interpreted in conjunction with Harris and Schultz (1997), these results suggest that high levels of maximum-sized SOES trades lead to more efficient price discovery. In light of these results, we believe that efforts to eliminate SOES based on volatility considerations are unwarranted.

This paper examines problems in the use of divergence of analyst opinion as a proxy for estimation risk in empirical studies of security returns and asset pricing models. We demonstrate that diversity of opinion can increase even though the amount of private information increases, and we show that diversity of opinion may overstate estimation risk if the capital market aggregates the information held by investors. We produce empirical results consistent with our conclusions. Specifically, we find that divergence of opinion can produce measures of estimation risk that are inconsistent with a received proxy for estimation risk and with observed common stock returns.

Previous analyses of market structures characterized by gradual information dissemination presume the equilibrium price existing after all market participants are informed is independent of the order of information dissemination. In these papers, final market clearing price, given the investors' posterior beliefs, is known a priori and is assumed to equal the price that would exist if data were disseminated simultaneously. We demonstrate that final equilibrium price is dependent, in general, on the order of information dissemination. This implies that, if the dissemination sequence is stochastic, price is unknown prior to the complete dissemination of information, even if the investors' posterior beliefs given the information event are known. We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for equilibrium price to be independent of the dissemination sequence in our economy. Our analysis highlights the importance of the wealth redistribution dynamics inherent in the information dissemination process.

The process of security price adjustment to the release of new information has long held the interest of the finance profession, both in academics and in practice. The efficiency of financial markets in reflecting new information significantly impacts the allocation of capital and income within the markets1 and, consequently, can affect social welfare. Thus, public, business, and investment policies are all related to an understanding of the functioning of security markets and their utilization of information. As a result, a significant body of economic research has considered the impact of information upon security markets under a number of alternative market structures. In this paper, we attempt to contribute to this literature by extending previous research in the two related areas of speculation and information dissemination.
