Summary
This chapter examines the legacy of Pirandello’s work in cinema. It outlines his own direct involvement in the medium, through novels (e.g., Shoot!), his work on adaptations and screenplays (for directors such as L’Herbier, Righelli, Ruttman), and essays expressing his ambivalent views on film as it evolved from the silent era to the “talkies.” This outline is followed by a survey of key film adaptations of his works (by Steno, de Sica, the Taviani brothers) and reflections on later film–theatre hybrids that mediate Pirandello’s transposition to the screen (e.g., by Rivette, Stoppard, Pinter). The chapter finally moves on to explore some broader, indirect forms of affinity that might be characterized as “Pirandellian.” It proposes four of these: films that play self-consciously and meta-cinematographically (e.g., by Nichetti, Allen); a cinema of “humorism” (e.g., in Fellini, Hitchcock); a cinema of selfhood that uses typical Pirandellian motifs such as doubling or insanity, among others (e.g., by Antonioni, Scorsese); and cinema as a medium of thought or philosophy (e.g., by Weir, Kaufman).

Background
Studying phenotypic and genetic characteristics of age at onset (AAO) and polarity at onset (PAO) in bipolar disorder can provide new insights into disease pathology and facilitate the development of screening tools.
AimsTo examine the genetic architecture of AAO and PAO and their association with bipolar disorder disease characteristics.
MethodGenome-wide association studies (GWASs) and polygenic score (PGS) analyses of AAO (n = 12 977) and PAO (n = 6773) were conducted in patients with bipolar disorder from 34 cohorts and a replication sample (n = 2237). The association of onset with disease characteristics was investigated in two of these cohorts.
ResultsEarlier AAO was associated with a higher probability of psychotic symptoms, suicidality, lower educational attainment, not living together and fewer episodes. Depressive onset correlated with suicidality and manic onset correlated with delusions and manic episodes. Systematic differences in AAO between cohorts and continents of origin were observed. This was also reflected in single-nucleotide variant-based heritability estimates, with higher heritabilities for stricter onset definitions. Increased PGS for autism spectrum disorder (β = −0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), major depression (β = −0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), schizophrenia (β = −0.39 years, s.e. = 0.08), and educational attainment (β = −0.31 years, s.e. = 0.08) were associated with an earlier AAO. The AAO GWAS identified one significant locus, but this finding did not replicate. Neither GWAS nor PGS analyses yielded significant associations with PAO.
ConclusionsAAO and PAO are associated with indicators of bipolar disorder severity. Individuals with an earlier onset show an increased polygenic liability for a broad spectrum of psychiatric traits. Systematic differences in AAO across cohorts, continents and phenotype definitions introduce significant heterogeneity, affecting analyses.

Summary
Marco Polo, Petrarch, Tasso, Croce interested Borges, however Dante sat at the very highest pinnacle in his map of world literature and permeates his works. Italy took to Borges with intense enthusiasm, starting in the mid-1950s, earlier than in most countries. Following his death, a pivotal point came in 1998 when the rights to his entire oeuvre were acquired by the publishind house, Adelphi. Many highly important writers absorbed Borgesian elements, with Calvino, Sciascia, and Eco standing out. The case of Eco as a Borges avatar is compelling. Sciascia drew out hidden political and historical aspects in Borges’s work. Borges exercise influence on Italian fantastic literature both before and after his death. And the adaptation of ’Theme of the Traitor and the Hero’ by Bertolucci in ’The Spider’s Stratagem’ is an example of the astonishing energy Borges gave to two generations and more of Italian literature and culture.

Summary
Any “national” literature of the Holocaust must necessarily confront not only intensely challenging universal questions to do with the darkest sides of human nature and human history, not only the millennial history of racial difference and the persecution of the Jews, but also a panoply of “local” questions, of circumstance and immediate cause, of politics and individual choice, of family, community, town, and nation. The Italian case is no exception to this rule.
Fascist Italy was the model and prime ally for Nazi Germany. Even if its racial politics were less predominant than Germany’s, its anti-Semitic Racial Laws of 1938, its colonial and anti-Slav violence, its aid with roundups and deportations after 1943 all point to a profound degree of complicity with genocide. And yet there is also a powerful counternarrative to Italy’s Holocaust, an array of delays, blockages, and obstacles Italians put in the way of the Final Solution, of heroic attempts by decent Italians to protect Jews and other victims. Furthermore, Italy – like Austria, France, and others – also has a narrative of “occupation” to set alongside its complicity, since during 1943–1945, when all deportations of Jews from Italy took place, large parts of the country were under de facto Nazi occupation. Something close to civil war ensued, during which the Nazis carried out deportations and dozens of civilian massacres, leaving devastating legacies of mourning and conflicted memory.

Summary
In standard histories, the Second World War is dated from 1939 to 1945, from Germany's invasion of Poland to surrender in Berlin and atom bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But global chronologies can obscure local histories, and often a simple adjustment of dates is useful as a first step towards understanding the particularities of a single nation's experience of the war and the literary representations that came out of it. The chronology of Italy's Second World War was complex and fragmented, producing distinct layers of memory and representation (and, indeed, silence and oblivion) within its war literature. So, if we were to start with a bald chronological adjustment to reflect this complexity, we should first replace 1939-45 with something like: 1940-43/45. Mussolini's regime - in power since 1922 (and in full dictatorial control since 1926) - had been the founding model of modern, Fascist totalitarianism and a key inspiration for Hitler's Nazi movement and rise to power. By 1939, Fascist Italy had long been talking of war, militarizing its youth, and fighting colonial or proxy wars (Ethiopia, Spain). It had formally allied itself to Nazi Germany in the Axis Pact of Steel in May 1939. However, when war was declared in September, Italy's armed forces were, in reality, drastically underprepared and ill equipped and could not hope to respect the Axis pact. Only when the astonishing Nazi sweep across Europe seemed to herald victory did Mussolini hastily join battle, in June 1940, invading southern France. In the following three years, Italy fought in several European and African theatres (Greece, Ethiopia, Egypt, Libya) and in the doomed Axis advance into Russia of 1941-43, and administered various occupied territories (parts of the Balkans, France); but in almost every arena, they were dogged by failure, leading to rescue or retreat.

Primo Levi (1919–87) was the author of a rich body of work, including memoirs and reflections on Auschwitz, poetry, science fiction, historical fiction and essays. In particular, his lucid and direct accounts of his time at Auschwitz, begun immediately after liberation in 1945 and sustained until weeks before his suicide in 1987, has made him one of the most admired of all Holocaust writer-survivors and one of the best guides we have for the interrogation of that horrific event. But there is also more to Levi than the voice of the witness. He has increasingly come to be recognised as one of the major literary voices of the twentieth century. This Companion brings together leading specialists on Levi and scholars in the fields of Holocaust studies, Italian literature and language, and literature and science, to offer a stimulating introduction to all aspects of the work of this extraordinary writer.
