Objective:
Accumulating evidence suggests that corpus callosum development is critically involved in the emergence of behavioral and cognitive skills during the first two years of life and that structural abnormalities of the corpus callosum are associated with a variety of neurodevelopmental disorders. Indeed by adulthood ∼30% of individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC), a congenital condition resulting in a partial or fully absent corpus callosum, exhibit phenotypic features consistent with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, very little is known about developmental similarities and/or differences among infants with ACC and infants who develop ASD. This study describes temperament in infants with ACC during the first year of life in comparison with a neurotypical control group. Additionally, it examines the potential contribution of disrupted callosal connectivity to early expression of temperament in ASD through comparison to children with high familial likelihood of ASD.
Participants and Methods:Longitudinal ratings of positive and negative emotionality were acquired at 6 and 12 months on the Infant Behavior Questionnaire-Revised across four groups of infants: isolated complete and partial ACC (n=104), high familial likelihood of ASD who do and do not have a confirmed ASD diagnosis (HL+ n=81, HL- n=282), and low-likelihood controls (LL- n=152).
Results:Overall, the ACC group demonstrated blunted affect, with significantly lower positive and negative emotionality than LL controls at both timepoints. Specifically, the ACC group exhibited lower activity and approach dimensions of positive emotionality at both timepoints, with lower high-intensity pleasure at 6 months and lower vocal reactivity at 12 months. On negative emotionality subscales, the ACC group exhibited lower distress to limitations and sadness at both timepoints, as well as lower falling reactivity at 6 months. The ACC and HL groups did not differ significantly on positive emotionality at either timepoint. However, negative emotionality was lower in the ACC group than the HL- group at both timepoints and lower than the HL+ group at 12 months, with lower distress to limitations and sadness ratings than both HL groups at both timepoints.
Conclusions:These findings highlight the importance of interhemispheric connections in facilitating active engagement and pursuit of pleasurable activities during the first year of life, as well as expression of sadness and distress to limitations. Notably, similarities between infants with ACC and infants at elevated familial risk of ASD suggest that disrupted callosal connectivity may specifically contribute to reductions in positive emotionality.

Objective:
Differences in adaptive functioning present early in development for many children with monogenic (Down Syndrome, Fragile X) and neurodevelopmental disorders. At this time, it is unclear whether children with ACC present with early adaptive delays, or if difficulties emerge later as functional tasks become more complex. While potential delays in motor development are frequently reported, other domains such as communication, social and daily living skills are rarely described. We used a prospective, longitudinal design to examine adaptive behavior from 6-24 months in children with ACC and compared their trajectories to those with monogenic and neurodevelopmental conditions.
Participants and Methods:Our sample included children with primary ACC (n= 27-47 depending on time point) whose caregivers completed the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-Interview 3rd Edition, via phone at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. Comparison samples (using the Vineland-2) included children with Down Syndrome (DS; n = 15-56), Fragile X (FX; n = 15-20), children at high familial likelihood for autism (HL-; n=192-280), and low likelihood (LL; no family history of autism and no developmental/behavioral diagnosis; n = 111196). A subset of the HL children received an autism diagnosis (HL+; n = 48-74). The DS group did not have an 18-month Vineland.
Results:A series of linear mixed model analyses (using maximum likelihood) for repeated measures was used to compare groups on three Vineland domains at 6, 12, 18 and 24 month timepoints). All fixed factors (diagnostic group, timepoint, and group X timepoint interaction) accounted for significant variance on all Vineland domains (p < .001). Post hoc comparisons with Bonferroni-correction examined ACC Vineland scores compared to the other diagnostic groups at each timepoint. At 6 months, parent-ratings indicated the ACC group had significantly weaker skills than the LL group in Communication and Motor domains. At 12, 18 and 24 months, ratings revealed weaker Communication, Daily Living and Motor skills in the ACC group compared to both the LL and HL- groups. Compared to the other clinical groups, the ACC group had stronger Socialization and Motor skills than Fragile X at 6 months, and at 24 months had stronger Communication and Socialization skills than both the DS and FX groups, as well as stronger Socialization than the HL+ group.
Conclusions:Compared to children with low likelihood of ASD, children with primary ACC reportedly have weaker Communication and Motor skills from 6 to 24 months, with weakness in Daily Living Skills appearing at 12 months and all differences increase with age. Compared to Fragile X, the ACC exhibited relative strengths in socialization and motor skills starting at 6 months. By 24 months, the ACC group was outperforming the monogenic groups on Socialization and Communication. In general, the ACC scores were consistent with the HL+ sample, except the ACC group had stronger Social skills at 18 and 24 months. The results clearly inform the need for early intervention in the domains of motor and language skills. Additionally, as we know that children with ACC are at increased risk for social difficulties, research is needed both using more fine-grained social-communication tools, and following children from infancy through middle childhood.

Pre-diagnostic deficits in social motivation are hypothesized to contribute to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a heritable neurodevelopmental condition. We evaluated psychometric properties of a social motivation index (SMI) using parent-report item-level data from 597 participants in a prospective cohort of infant siblings at high and low familial risk for ASD. We tested whether lower SMI scores at 6, 12, and 24 months were associated with a 24-month ASD diagnosis and whether social motivation’s course differed relative to familial ASD liability. The SMI displayed good internal consistency and temporal stability. Children diagnosed with ASD displayed lower mean SMI T-scores at all ages and a decrease in mean T-scores across age. Lower group-level 6-month scores corresponded with higher familial ASD liability. Among high-risk infants, strong decline in SMI T-scores was associated with 10-fold odds of diagnosis. Infant social motivation is quantifiable by parental report, differentiates children with versus without later ASD by age 6 months, and tracks with familial ASD liability, consistent with a diagnostic and susceptibility marker of ASD. Early decrements and decline in social motivation indicate increased likelihood of ASD, highlighting social motivation’s importance to risk assessment and clarification of the ontogeny of ASD.
Reduced Fusiform Gyrus Activation During Face Processing in Pediatric Brain Tumor Survivors

Objective:
The neural mechanisms contributing to the social problems of pediatric brain tumor survivors (PBTS) are unknown. Face processing is important to social communication, social behavior, and peer acceptance. Research with other populations with social difficulties, namely autism spectrum disorder, suggests atypical brain activation in areas important for face processing. This case-controlled functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study compared brain activation during face processing in PBTS and typically developing (TD) youth.
Methods:Participants included 36 age-, gender-, and IQ-matched youth (N = 18 per group). PBTS were at least 5 years from diagnosis and 2 years from the completion of tumor therapy. fMRI data were acquired during a face identity task and a control condition. Groups were compared on activation magnitude within the fusiform gyrus for the faces condition compared to the control condition. Correlational analyses evaluated associations between neuroimaging metrics and indices of social behavior for PBTS participants.
Results:Both groups demonstrated face-specific activation within the social brain for the faces condition compared to the control condition. PBTS showed significantly decreased activation for faces in the medial portions of the fusiform gyrus bilaterally compared to TD youth, ps ≤ .004. Higher peak activity in the left fusiform gyrus was associated with better socialization (r = .53, p < .05).
Conclusions:This study offers initial evidence of atypical activation in a key face processing area in PBTS. Such atypical activation may underlie some of the social difficulties of PBTS. Social cognitive neuroscience methodologies may elucidate the neurobiological bases for PBTS social behavior.

Stated preference scenarios often provide information on intermediate biophysical processes but omit information on the resulting final services that provide utility. This may cause respondents to speculate about the effects of intermediate outcomes on their welfare, leading to biased welfare estimates. This work clarifies distinctions between intermediate and final ecosystem services within stated preference valuation and develops a structural model by which to infer respondents’ speculations when a final ecosystem service is omitted. The model also derives implications for welfare estimates. Methods and results are illustrated using an application of choice experiments to fish restoration in Rhode Island's Pawtuxet watershed.

Summary
The past two decades of neuroimaging research on developmental disabilities appear to reflect the development of the field of neuroimaging itself. The vast majority of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies on developmental disabilities have come from modular perspectives of brain function – where specific areas are associated with specific mental operations, developmental patterns, and clinical symptoms. More recently, it has become clear that, although critical, modular perspectives ought not to obscure the importance of distributed perspectives, where cognitive functions are implemented via complex interactions between multiple brain areas.
This chapter reviews MRI findings on developmental disabilities that arise from both modular and distributed perspectives on brain function, although the former clearly represent the majority of existing data. The chapter will focus exclusively on autism-spectrum disorders (ASD, including the diagnoses of autism, Asperger's Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified). Some of the most recent and exciting developments in the neurobiology of ASD relate to abnormal functional and structural connectivity – in particular, findings of decreased long-range connectivity between brain areas. We conclude the chapter by discussing important futures avenues, with particular emphasis on study designs and techniques that are capable of integrating data from multiple sources.
The autism spectrum
The classic “triad” of autism includes (1) delayed or impaired communication abilities, (2) diminished social skills and social isolation, and (3) repetitive behaviors or restricted interest repertoires. These symptoms typically emerge early in development (noticeable by age 2 or 3) and are generally lifelong (Volkmar et al.,2005).

Summary
As on Earth, other solid-surfaced planetary bodies in the solar system display landforms produced by tectonic activity, such as faults, folds, and fractures. These features are resolved in spacecraft observations directly or with techniques that extract topographic information from a diverse suite of data types, including radar backscatter and altimetry, visible and near-infrared images, and laser altimetry. Each dataset and technique has its strengths and limitations that govern how to optimally utilize and properly interpret the data and what sizes and aspects of features can be recognized. The ability to identify, discriminate, and map tectonic features also depends on the uniqueness of their form, on the morphologic complexity of the terrain in which the structures occur, and on obscuration of the features by erosion and burial processes. Geologic mapping of tectonic structures is valuable for interpretation of the surface strains and of the geologic histories associated with their formation, leading to possible clues about: (1) the types or sources of stress related to their formation, (2) the mechanical properties of the materials in which they formed, and (3) the evolution of the body's surface and interior where timing relationships can be determined. Formal mapping of tectonic structures has been performed and/or is in progress for Earth's Moon, the planets Mars, Mercury, and Venus, and the satellites of Jupiter (Callisto, Ganymede, Europa, and Io).

This study developed a method for measuring subjective costs and benefits of psychiatric treatments. Forty-one patients rated the relative bothersomeness of symptoms of schizophrenia and side effects of neuroleptics. Thirty-four psychiatrists made parallel ratings from the perspective of the average patient (individual utility) and of the patient's family and society (institutional utility). Psychiatrists predicted patients' ratings moderately well, but misjudged the bothersomeness to patients of 24% of side effects and 20% of symptoms. When considering the patient's perspective, both schizophrenic patients and psychiatrists rated symptoms as no more bothersome than side effects. However, psychiatrists saw side effects as significantly less bothersome than symptoms when considering costs to society. The subjective utility of neuroleptic medications for schizophrenia is most justifiable from an institutional perspective.

Social and Emotional Adjustment in Children Affected with Gilles de la Tourette's Syndrome: Associations with ADHD and Family Functioning

This study examined social-emotional functioning in children with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (TS) alone and children with TS and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In addition, the contribution of family functioning to social competence was examined. Children with a clinical diagnosis of TS were recruited from the Yale Child Study Center TS specialty clinic. Unaffected control children were recruited through newspaper advertisements and announcements within the university and at area schools. The final sample consisted of 72 children (45 boys and 27 girls) between the ages of 8 and 14. Sixteen children met DMS-III-R criteria for TS, 33 children met criteria for TS and ADHD, and 23 children had no psychiatric diagnoses. Children with TS and ADHD evidenced more externalizing and internalizing behavior problems and poorer social adaptation than children with TS only or unaffected controls. Children with TS only were not significantly different from unaffected controls on most measures of externalizing behaviors and social adaptation but did exhibit more internalizing symptoms. Tic symptom severity was not associated with social, behavioral, or emotional functioning among children with TS, even after stratifying by medication status. However, ADHD diagnosis, obsessional symptom severity, and family functioning were significantly associated with social and emotional adjustment among TS children. Moreover, family functioning was associated with social and emotional adjustment even after controlling for TS and ADHD diagnostic status. These findings demonstrate that much of the social and behavioral dysfunction in children with TS is ADHD-specific and children with TS alone have a very different social-emotional profile than do those with TS plus ADHD. Finally, social-emotional adjustment in children with TS is best understood within the family context.
