Background: Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many variables have contributed to surges in cases such as the presence of variants, vaccination status, and comorbid medical conditions. However, other factors can be considered including temperature, precipitation, and periods in large congregations. The spike in SARS-CoV-2 infections during the winter has made it seem plausible that transmission may be affected by meteorological factors. A study by Birukov et al demonstrated that a 1°C increase in temperature was associated with a 3.08% reduction in daily new cases and a 1.19% decrease in daily new deaths. We propose that SARS-CoV-2 transmission will decline more rapidly when either precipitation or temperature is higher; thus, in warmer regions with less precipitation daily cases, hospitalizations and deaths will be lower. Methods: This is a retrospective study of statewide data in Hartford County, Connecticut, collected from May 2020 to June 2022 assessing percent positivity reported in daily case count, hospitalizations for COVID-19, and deaths from COVID-19 collected from the Connecticut Department of Public Health COVID-19 database. Information on weather conditions, including temperature and precipitation, were collected from the National Weather Service pertaining to Hartford County. Trends in variables related to patient outcomes were compared to weather conditions within the county of Hartford. Moreover, certain periods within the various seasons that typically involve large gatherings and public holidays (eg, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day) were further analyzed. Results: There appears to be an inverse correlation coefficient of −0.422, between confirmed daily cases and mean temperature in Hartford County, indicating that as temperature increases, confirmed cases decrease. This phenomenon is also observed with confirmed daily deaths and mean temperature, with a correlation coefficient of −0.463. Moreover, there is an even more significant relationship between hospitalization cases and mean temperature, with a correlation coefficient of −0.667. Furthermore, the year-end holidays (Christmas Day and New Year’s Day) were associated with a significant spike in confirmed daily cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.
However, the relationship between confirmed daily cases, hospitalized cases, and confirmed deaths against mean precipitation in Hartford County demonstrated no significant relationship, reporting correlation coefficients of −0.042, −0.044, and −0.044, respectively. Conclusions: Our available COVID-19 and weather data show that temperature is inversely correlated with daily cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. However, with regard to precipitation, there was no discernable relationship between the variables.

Since the start of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there has been interest in using wastewater monitoring as an approach for disease surveillance. A significant uncertainty that would improve the interpretation of wastewater monitoring data is the intensity and timing with which individuals shed RNA from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) into wastewater. By combining wastewater and case surveillance data sets from a university campus during a period of heightened surveillance, we inferred that individual shedding of RNA into wastewater peaks on average 6 days (50% uncertainty interval (UI): 6–7; 95% UI: 4–8) following infection, and that wastewater measurements are highly overdispersed [negative binomial dispersion parameter, k = 0.39 (95% credible interval: 0.32–0.48)]. This limits the utility of wastewater surveillance as a leading indicator of secular trends in SARS-CoV-2 transmission during an epidemic, and implies that it could be most useful as an early warning of rising transmission in areas where transmission is low or clinical testing is delayed or of limited capacity.

There is growing interest globally in using real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE) for health technology assessment (HTA). Optimal collection, analysis, and use of RWD/RWE to inform HTA requires a conceptual framework to standardize processes and ensure consistency. However, such framework is currently lacking in Asia, a region that is likely to benefit from RWD/RWE for at least two reasons. First, there is often limited Asian representation in clinical trials unless specifically conducted in Asian populations, and RWD may help to fill the evidence gap. Second, in a few Asian health systems, reimbursement decisions are not made at market entry; thus, allowing RWD/RWE to be collected to give more certainty about the effectiveness of technologies in the local setting and inform their appropriate use. Furthermore, an alignment of RWD/RWE policies across Asia would equip decision makers with context-relevant evidence, and improve timely patient access to new technologies. Using data collected from eleven health systems in Asia, this paper provides a review of the current landscape of RWD/RWE in Asia to inform HTA and explores a way forward to align policies within the region. This paper concludes with a proposal to establish an international collaboration among academics and HTA agencies in the region: the REAL World Data In ASia for HEalth Technology Assessment in Reimbursement (REALISE) working group, which seeks to develop a non-binding guidance document on the use of RWD/RWE to inform HTA for decision making in Asia.

Soft X-ray spectro-tomography provides three-dimensional (3D) chemical mapping based on natural X-ray absorption properties. Since radiation damage is intrinsic to X-ray absorption, it is important to find ways to maximize signal within a given dose. For tomography, using the smallest number of tilt series images that gives a faithful reconstruction is one such method. Compressed sensing (CS) methods have relatively recently been applied to tomographic reconstruction algorithms, providing faithful 3D reconstructions with a much smaller number of projection images than when conventional reconstruction methods are used. Here, CS is applied in the context of scanning transmission X-ray microscopy tomography. Reconstructions by weighted back-projection, the simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique, and CS are compared. The effects of varying tilt angle increment and angular range for the tomographic reconstructions are examined. Optimization of the regularization parameter in the CS reconstruction is explored and discussed. The comparisons show that CS can provide improved reconstruction fidelity relative to weighted back-projection and simultaneous iterative reconstruction techniques, with increasingly pronounced advantages as the angular sampling is reduced. In particular, missing wedge artifacts are significantly reduced and there is enhanced recovery of sharp edges. Examples of using CS for low-dose scanning transmission X-ray microscopy spectroscopic tomography are presented.

Eu3+ ion-doped BaY2ZnO5 phosphors were synthesized using a vibrating milled solid-state reaction. The phosphors exhibit a series of Eu3+ ion intra-4f excited state 5DJ (J = 3, 2, 1, 0) transitions under an excitation of 395 nm. The maximum photoluminescence intensity for 5D0 → 7F2 transition (625 nm) was obtained at a Eu3+ ion concentration of 40 mol%; quenching occurred at higher concentrations. The critical distance (Rc) for the 5DJ (J = 3, 2, 1) → 7F1 transition was 18.1 Å, which is longer than that of 6.67 Å for the 5D0 → 7F2 transition, indicating that 5DJ (J = 3, 2, 1) is easier for concentration quench because of the cross-relaxation mechanism. The red emission of the BaY1.6Eu0.4ZnO5 phosphor has CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.66, 0.34), which are close to the NTSC system standard red chromaticity (0.67, 0.33). BaY1.6Eu0.4ZnO5 may thus be potentially applicable as a red phosphor for ultraviolet light-emitting diodes converted in solid-state lighting technology.
