The First Cases of Evolving Glyphosate Resistance in UK Poverty Brome (Bromus sterilis) Populations

Poverty brome (Bromus sterilis L.) [sterile or barren brome, syn. Anisantha sterilis (L.) Nevski] is a problematic UK arable weed. There are currently no confirmed cases of glyphosate resistance in any weed species in the United Kingdom or in B. sterilis worldwide. However, there are reports of poor control by glyphosate in this species. Here, we report experiments to confirm the suspected on-farm resistance of B. sterilis populations to glyphosate. Glyphosate screening and dose–response experiments established that glyphosate sensitivity of three UK B. sterilis populations exhibiting poor field control is outside the normal range of sensitivity of 30 sensitive populations and adjacent unexposed populations. Control of sensitive populations ranged from 49% to 82% and for suspected resistant populations from 21% to 30%. Dose–response ED50 values of sensitive populations ranged between 241 and 313 g ai ha−1; corresponding values of suspected resistant populations ranged between 420 and 810 g ha−1, and resistance indices ranged from 1.55 to 4.5. Suspected resistant populations were incompletely controlled at the recommended field rate of glyphosate (540 g ha−1), while adjacent unexposed populations were completely controlled. We conclude that some UK populations of B. sterilis have reduced glyphosate sensitivity and are in the process of evolving resistance. This is the first reported case of reduced glyphosate sensitivity in any UK weed species and in B. sterilis worldwide. This, coupled with increasing glyphosate use, highlights the need for increased vigilance and monitoring for glyphosate resistance in the United Kingdom.

Electrochemical reactions at both positive and negative electrodes in a nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery during charge have been investigated by in situ neutron powder diffraction. Commercially available β-Ni(OH)2 and LaNi5-based powders were used in this experiment as positive and negative electrodes, respectively. Exchange of hydrogen by deuterium for the β-Ni(OH)2 electrode was achieved by ex situ cycling of the cell prior to in situ measurements. Neutron diffraction data collected in situ show that the largest amount of deuterium contained at the positive electrode is de-intercalated from the electrode with no phase transformation involved up to ∼100 mA h/g and, in addition, the 110 peak width for the positive electrode increases on charge. The negative electrode of composition MmNi3.6Al0.4Mn0.3Co0.7, where Mm = Mischmetal, exhibits a phase transformation to an intermediate hydride γ phase first and then to the β phase on charge. Unit cell dimensions and phase fractions have been investigated by Rietveld refinement of the crystal structure.

Health equity audits in general practice: a strategy to reduce health inequalities

Background
This quality improvement project was set in Tower Hamlets, east London, with the aim of reducing health inequalities by ethnicity, age and gender in the management of three common chronic diseases.
MethodsRoutinely collected clinical data were extracted from practice computer systems using Morbidity Information Query and Export Syntax (MIQUEST) and Egton Medical Information Systems (EMIS) Web, between 2007 and 2010. Health equity audits for 38 practices in Tower Hamlets primary care trust (PCT) were constructed to cover key process and outcome measures for each of the three major chronic diseases: coronary heart disease (CHD), type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The equity audit was disseminated to practices along with facilitation sessions.
ResultsWe show evidence of baseline inequalities in each condition across the three east London PCTs. The intervention tracked four key indicators (cholesterol levels in CHD, blood pressure and haemoglobin A1c levels in diabetes and % smoking in COPD). Performance for physician-driven interventions improved, but smoking rates remained static. All ethnic groups showed improvement, but there was no evidence of a reduction in differences between ethnic groups. Reductions in gender and age group differences were noted in diabetes and CHD.
ConclusionsUsing routine clinical data, it is possible to develop practice-level health equity reports. These can unmask previously hidden inequalities between groups, and promote discussion with practice teams to stimulate strategies for improvements in performance. Steady improvements in chronic disease management were observed, however, systematic differences between ethnic groups remain. We are not able to attribute observed changes to the audits. These reports illustrate the importance of collecting ethnicity data at practice level. Tools such as this audit can be adapted to monitor inequalities in primary care settings.

The construction of interaction potentials for the Y0.5+0.25xNb0.25xZr0.5–0.5xO1.75 system, on a purely ab-initio basis, is described. These potentials accurately reproduce experimental data on both the structure and the dynamics of these systems; the computer simulations also reproduce the experimental trend of the conductivity, which decreases as x increases, and of the level of static disorder within the O2− sublattice, which increases with x. A detailed analysis of these phenomena shows that the static disorder in Y3NbO7 is caused by the high Nb5+ charge and that in this material the conduction is heterogeneous, i.e. some anions are completely immobile while some others are very mobile. The role of the cation sublattice is explained in detail.

The superionic conducting properties of fluorite structured compounds are discussed in this paper, starting with a brief historical overview of the topic. The current state of knowledge concerning the dynamic lattice disorder associated with the high values of ionic conductivity is summarized and illustrated using three examples taken from the author’s research program. These are chosen to highlight different aspects of the structure-property relationships within fluorite-structured superionics and, in particular, demonstrate the role of the neutron diffraction technique in investigations of compounds showing high levels of ionic conductivity. The paper concludes with an overview of some current developments within this research field.

Background
Inequalities of service use across ethnic groups are important to policy makers, service providers and service users.
AimsTo identify ethnic variations in pathways to specialist mental health care, continuity of contact, voluntary and compulsory psychiatric in-patient admissions; to assess the methodological strength of the findings.
MethodA systematic review of all quantitative studies comparing use of mental health services by more than one ethnic group in the UK. Narrative analysis supplemented by meta-analysis, where appropriate.
ResultsMost studies compared Black and White patients, finding higher rates of in-patient admission among Black patients. The pooled odds ratio for compulsory admission, Black patients compared with White patients, was 4.31 (95% CI 3.33–5.58). Black patients had more complex pathways to specialist care, with some evidence of ethnic variations in primary care assessments.
ConclusionsThere is strong evidence of variation between ethnic groups for voluntary and compulsory admissions, and some evidence of variation in pathways to specialist care.
The Ferroelastic Transformation in Yttria- and Ceria-Stabilised Tetragonal Zirconia Via Neutron Diffraction

Neutron diffraction studies of tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (TZP) subjected to a varying applied uniaxial stress indicates that a ferroelastic crystalline transformation occurs within the bulk of the material. The critical coercive stress was determined to be (1.65±0.03) GPa for yttria stabilised TZP and (0.70±0.05) GPa for ceria stabilised TZP. The results agree well with previous reports concerning the ferroelasticity of tetragonal zirconia, and provide direct evidence indicating that the anomalies observed using the first X-ray diffraction studies originate from the bulk of the ceramic and not solely from the surface. The preferred orientation observed in the tetragonal crystallites was measured as a function of applied uniaxial stress and interpreted via a resolved stress criterion. It is believed that the ferroelastic transformation can act as an energy absorbing mechanism and hence toughen zirconia or ceramics containing dispersed zirconia.
