Southern Ocean sea ice can exhibit widespread flooding and subsequent snow-ice formation, due to relatively thick snow covers compared to the total ice thickness. Considerable subkilometer scale variability in snow and ice thickness causes poorly constrained uncertainties in determining the amount of flooding that occurs. Using datasets of snow depth and ice thickness acquired in the Weddell Sea during austral winter 2013 (AWECS campaign) from three floes, we demonstrate large spatial variability of a factor 10 and 5 for snow and combined snow and ice thickness, respectively. The temporal evolution after the floe visit was recorded by automatic weather station and ice mass balance buoys. Using a physics-based, multi-layer snow/sea ice model in a one-dimensional and distributed mode to simulate the thermodynamic processes, we show that the distributed simulations, modeling flooding across the entire heterogeneous floe, produced vastly different amounts of flooding than one-dimensional single point simulations. Three times the flooding is produced in the one-dimensional simulation for the buoy location than distributed (floe-averaged) simulations. The latter is in close agreement with buoy observations. The results suggest that using point observations or one-dimensional simulations to extrapolate processes on the floe-scale can overestimate the amount of flooding and snow-ice formation.

The first demonstration of laser action in ruby was made in 1960 by T. H. Maiman of Hughes Research Laboratories, USA. Many laboratories worldwide began the search for lasers using different materials, operating at different wavelengths. In the UK, academia, industry and the central laboratories took up the challenge from the earliest days to develop these systems for a broad range of applications. This historical review looks at the contribution the UK has made to the advancement of the technology, the development of systems and components and their exploitation over the last 60 years.

Consumers rely on experience and credence attributes when purchasing beef from retailers. It is essential for all beef industry sectors to recognize the complexity of consumer buying behavior. A hedonic model is estimated to determine if there are incentives to brand beef steaks, the types of brands that entertain price premiums, and the level of existing premiums. Most branded steaks garnered premiums along with organic claims, religious processing claims, and premium cuts. Factors influencing brand value were new brands targeting emerging consumer trends, brands with regional prominence, and brands positioned as special label, program/breed specific production, and store labels.

In this paper, various types of defects (both threading dislocation and misfit dislocations) in strained Si (sSi) have been analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Germanium upper-diffusion has been studied by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) for strained Si on SiGe/SOI. SGOI-devices processed using an optimized thermal budget show minimal Ge diffusion and minimal process related defects. Correlation between the device performance (such as leakage current and reliability) and structural information found in TEM has been established.

SiGe/SOI films have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy. For low Ge composition (∼ 20%), strain relaxation in the SiGe layer is minimal (<0.25%). For higher Ge content (32%), the tensile strain in a Si capping layer grown on top of SiGe/SOI is 0.46% (a stress of 0.81 GPa). TEM has revealed that most of the resulting defects at the SiGe/SOI interface and move downward. The misfit dislocation (MD) linear density is 17/μm, being consistent with the strain relaxation of the SiGe layer as determined by Raman spectroscopy. Upon thermal annealing, residual strain in the SiGe films has been further relaxed via two major routes (a) introduction of more MDs, and (b) development of surface undulation. High strain relaxation has been achieved in a SiGe layer grown on a higher-Ge content buffer layer.

Strained Si-based technology has imposed a new challenge for understanding dopant implantation and diffusion in SiGe that is often used as the buffer layer for a strained Si cap layer. In this work, we describe our latest modeling effort investigating the difference in dopant implantation and diffusion between Si and SiGe. A lattice expansion theory was developed to account for the volume change due to Ge in Si and its effect on defect formation enthalpy. The theory predicts that As diffusion in SiGe is enhanced by a factor of ∼10, P diffusion by a factor of ∼2, and B diffusion is retarded by a factor of ∼6, when compared to bulk Si. These predictions are consistent with experiment. Dopant profiles for As, P, and B were simulated using process simulators FLOOPS and DIOS. The simulated profiles are in good agreement with experiment.
