The emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is a serious pest of ash (Fraxinus spp.) (Oleaceae) in North America. Control of emerald ash borer is difficult in natural forest settings; therefore, a classical biological control programme is the most feasible management option for this invasive, nonnative insect. Here, we report the first Canadian release and establishment of parasitoids Tetrastichus planipennisi Yang (Hymeoptera: Eulophinae), Oobius agrili Zhang and Huang (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), and Spathius galinae Belokobylskij and Strazanac (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in natural forests in Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick, Canada for the control of emerald ash borer. Releases of T. planipennisi were made from 2013 to 2019, O. agrili from 2015 to 2019, and S. galinae from 2017 to 2019. Trees from release sites were destructively sampled to rear out adult emerald ash borers and parasitoids 1–3 years after parasitoid release. Recoveries of T. planipennisi were made at 81% of release sites (13 of 16) 1–2 years after release, and O. agili were recovered from 29% of release sites (4 of 14) 1–3 years after release. Spathius galinae was not recovered. These data provide important information for the development and deployment of a successful biological control programme for the management of emerald ash borer in Canada.

We analysed the supportive social networks associated with the conservation of six threatened Australian bird taxa, in one of the first network analyses of threatened species conservation programmes. Each example showed contrasting vulnerabilities. The Alligator Rivers yellow chat Epthianura crocea tunneyi had the smallest social network and no real action was supported. For the Capricorn yellow chat Epthianura crocea macgregori the network was centred on one knowledgeable and committed actor. The orange-bellied parrot Neophema chrysogaster had a strongly connected recovery team but gaps in the overall network could limit communication. The recovery teams for the swift parrot Lathamus discolor and Baudin's black-cockatoo Calyptorhynchus baudinii had strong links among most stakeholders but had weak ties to the timber industry and orchardists, respectively, limiting their capacity to manage threatening processes. Carnaby's black cockatoo Calyptorhynchus latirostris seemed to have the most effective social network of any of the taxa studied but may be vulnerable to skill shortages. In each case the network analysis pointed to gaps that could be filled to enhance the conservation effort, and highlighted the importance of recovery teams. The research suggests that formal network analysis could assist in the design of more effective support mechanisms for the conservation of threatened species.

Orchid seeds are among the smallest seeds in nature and they are naturally rich in fatty acids. However, the fatty acid composition of orchid seeds has not been investigated because the sample masses utilized for widely used methods for fatty acid profiling would generally require prohibitively large numbers (i.e. 10,000s) of seeds. The present work aimed to develop a method for fatty acid analysis using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry on small quantities (mg) of seeds. The method was developed using the seeds of two species, Dactylorhiza fuchsii, a temperate terrestrial, and Grammatophyllum speciosum, a tropical epiphyte. A range of sample masses was tested to determine the minimum mass required to achieve reliable fatty acid composition data. A direct transesterification method was used, which did not require extraction of fatty acids from seeds prior to analysis, and the effects of seed processing (crushed versus intact seeds) and incubation time in toluene on fatty acid yield were tested. Stable fatty acid profiles were obtained using as little as 10 mg of seeds. Neither crushing the seeds nor extending the toluene incubation step had much effect on the fatty acid yield. The simple direct transesterification method presented will enable the fatty acid composition of orchid seeds, and possibly other small seeds, to be determined reliably for studies into seed development, storage and germination.

Summary
This contribution reflects on the experience of being involved in an attempt to collaboratively develop and model proposals for open government. The contributors thoughtfully and carefully set out a range of challenging issues for more collaborative forms of policy design, reflecting on the interests and experiences of different stakeholders from both government and civil society. In doing so, they show how politics and values are central, if often hidden, in policy making. In particular, they show that seeking to make policy differently raises questions of legitimacy, representation, the exercise of authority, how trade-offs between competing interests and values are made, the allocation of risk and accountability and the interplay between different processes and cultures. This contribution demonstrates that failing to recognise these political dynamics risks undermining the legitimacy and viability of new forms of more co-productive policy design.
[We have] consistently made clear our commitment for the UK to become ‘the most open and transparent government in the world’. Our resolve has not weakened. Indeed, our engagement with civil society to develop and agree the stretching and ambitious commitments in this second Open Government Partnership UK National Action Plan has strengthened, not lessened our commitment to open government. The result of this partnership is a set of commitments that take important steps towards increased openness. (Rt Hon Francis Maude MP, Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General, 2013)
This contribution draws on an example of open, collaborative policy making which took place over the course of 18 months. Looking back on the process and therefore with the benefit of hindsight, we feel we have learnt a number of lessons about what makes for successful, open and collaborative policy processes. Collaborative policy making can only flourish when it has the political space to do so and this can only be opened, and kept open, by senior politicians. Without ‘senior’ permission to act differently, those within the process are unable to develop the creativity and flexibility required to identify and reach a commonly defined goal.
Politics, in the sense of shifting power balances and individual interests clamouring to be heard, churn just below the surface of any collaborative process.

Autoimmune encephalitides can present with altered mental states, particularly psychosis and delirium. Psychiatrists need to be particularly vigilant in cases of first-episode psychosis and to look out for other, sometimes subtle, features of encephalitis. Encephalitis related to N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor autoantibodies is the most common autoimmune cause of isolated psychosis, the second being related to voltage-gated potassium channel (VGKC)-complex antibodies. Psychiatrists should note ‘red flag’ signs of seizures, autonomic instability, movement disorders and sensitivity to antipsychotic medication (including neuroleptic malignant syndrome). They should also be aware that, in some cases, encephalitis is a non-metastatic manifestation of malignancy. Treatment primarily involves suppression of immunity and is often successful if delivered early. There is accumulating evidence that isolated psychiatric syndromes can be caused by autoimmunity and this could potentially signal a significant change in the approach to disorders such as schizophrenia. Psychiatrists and neurologists need to work together to diagnose, manage and understand this group of conditions.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES• Consider ‘red flags' for the diagnosis of autoimmune encephalitis presenting to general psychiatric practice.
• Understand the investigations required to diagnose autoimmune encephalitis.
• Become familiar with the basics of treatment of autoimmune encephalitis.

Electron-beam-induced carbon film deposition has long been recognized as a side effect of scanning electron microscopy. To characterize the nature of this type of contamination, silicon wafers were subjected to prolonged exposure to 15 kV electron beam energy with a probe current of ∼300 pA. Using Raman spectroscopy, the deposited coating was identified as an amorphous carbon film with an estimated crystallite size of 125 Å. Using atomic force microscopy, the cross-sectional profile of the coating was found to be raised and textured, indicative of the beam raster pattern. A map of the Raman intensity across the coating showed increased intensity along the edges and at the corner of the film. The intensity profile was in excess of that which could be explained by thickness alone. The enhancement was found to correspond with a modeled local field enhancement induced by the coating boundary and showed that the deposited carbon coating generated a localized disturbance in the opto-electrical properties of the substrate, which is compared and contrasted with Raman edge enhancement that is produced by surface structure in silicon.

Background
Drugs of dependence cause dopamine release in the rat striatum. Human neuroimaging studies have shown an increase in dopamine in the equivalent region in response to stimulants and other drugs
AimsWe tested whether opioids provoke dopamine release and its relationship to the subjective experience
MethodIn two combined studies 14 heroin addicts on methadone maintenance treatment underwent two positron emission tomography brain scans of the dopamine system using [11C]-raclopride following an injection of placebo and either 50 mg intravenous diamorphine or 10 mg subcutaneous hydromorphone in a double-blind, random order design
ResultsBoth opioids produced marked subjective and physiological effects, but no measurable change in [11C]-raclopride binding
ConclusionsThe absence of a dopamine response to opioid agonists contrasts with that found with stimulant drugs and suggests dopamine may not play the same role in addiction to opioids. This questions the role of dopamine in the subjective experience of heroin in opioid addicts

Background
Although opioid receptor function in humans is clearly reduced during opioid dependence, what happens to the receptor in early abstinence is not understood.
AimsThis study sought to examine changes in opioid receptor availability in early abstinence from opioid dependence.
MethodTen people with opioid dependence who had completed inpatient detoxification and 20 healthy controls underwent [11C]-diprenorphine positron emission tomography. Clinical variables were assessed with structured questionnaires. Opioid receptor binding was characterised as the volume of distribution of [11C]-diprenorphine using a template of predefined brain volumes and an exploratory voxel-by-voxel analysis.
ResultsCompared with controls, participants with opioid dependence had increased [11C]-diprenorphine binding in the whole brain and in 15 of the 21 a priori regions studied.
ConclusionsThis study suggests that opioid receptor binding is increased throughout the brain in early abstinence from dependent opioid use. These data complement the findings in cocaine and alcohol dependence.

Background
A susceptibility locus for schizophrenia in the pseudoautosomal region has been proposed on the basis of a possible excess of sex chromosome aneuploidies among patients with schizophrenia and an increased sex concordance in affected sib pairs. Several studies investigating this hypothesis have produced conflicting evidence.
MethodIn a series of Icelandic and British families, we used lod score and sib pair linkage analyses with markers for the MIC2 and DXYS14 loci on the pseudoautosomal XY region.
ResultsLod and sib pair linkage analysis with these markers produced strongly negative scores. Heterogeneity testing also produced negative results.
ConclusionWe conclude that the present study provides no support for the involvement of either the pseudoautosomal region or the nearby region of the sex chromosomes in the aetiology of schizophrenia.
