Summary
Introduction
In this chapter the concepts of social value reviewed by Liddle in Chapter 8 will be developed to include environmental value and, in particular, the wicked issue of climate change. Liddle critically reviews the literature on public and social value, and the historical development of these ideas in relation to New Public Management and the quantification of social value in relation to the relative importance that people place on changes experienced in their lives from a wellbeing perspective. Using a combination of accounting and economic measures, the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and Deloitte have used international accounting standards and UN Sustainable Goals.
Social value and environmental value is defined with reference to the different approaches through the lens of various organisations and, where focusing on environmental value in this chapter, it covers its impact at an international, national, regional and local level in particular with reference to climate change strategies and with references to housing. More detailed discussion of housing will be presented in Chapter 11, and youth employment in Chapter 12.
Global climate change concern
Concern and debate relating to climate change is not new. While provisions on climate change were adopted in the ‘Declaration of the United Nations Conference’ on 16 June 1972 in Stockholm, it was not until much later that decisive action could be said to have occurred. The size and scale of the problem was noted at the time within a statement released on 16 July 1992 by the Union of Concerned Scientists, a group of leading US scientists dedicated to raising issues around climate change. In its press release it noted that ‘human beings and the natural world are on a collision course’ and went on to outline specific areas of environmental concern, namely, the atmosphere, water resources, oceans, soil, forests and living species Union of Concerned Scientists, 1992).
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
In May 1992, underlining the need for a Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC), the UN stated that ‘human activities have been substantially increasing the atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, that these increases enhance the natural greenhouse effect, and that this will result on average in an additional warming of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere and may adversely affect natural ecosystems and humankind’ (UN, 1992).

Summary
In recent years there has been a resumption of research into the potential therapeutic benefits of psychedelic1 drugs such as MDMA2, psilocybin and LSD3. Clinical research suggests significant efficacy for psychiatric disorders that have traditionally been hard to treat. The evidence base has accumulated to the point that psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy appears to be moving from a fringe subject to a significant new treatment method that all psychotherapists should at least be aware of and that some may develop into a special interest.

The paper reports on the fourth (2010) season of fieldwork of the Cyrenaican Prehistory Project, and on further results of analyses of artefacts and organic materials collected in the 2009 season. Ground-based LiDar has provided both an accurate 3D scan of the Haua Fteah cave and information on the cave's morphometry or origins. The excavations in the cave focussed on Middle Palaeolithic or Middle Stone Age ‘Pre-Aurignacian’ layers below the base of the Middle Trench beside the McBurney Deep Sounding (Trench D) and on Final Palaeolithic ‘Oranian’ layers beside the upper part of the Middle Trench (Trench M). Although McBurney referred to the upper part of the Deep Sounding as more or less sterile, the 2010 excavations found evidence for small-scale but regular human presence in the form of stone artefacts and debitage, though given the sedimentary context the latter are unlikely to represent in situ knapping. The excavations of Trench M extended from the basal Capsian layers investigated in 2009 through Oranian layers to the transition with the Dabban Upper Palaeolithic. Some 17,000 lithic pieces have been studied from the Capsian and Oranian layers excavated in Trench M, in an area measuring less than 2 m by 1 m by 1.1 m deep, along with numerous animal bones, molluscs, and macrobotanical remains, as well as occasional shell beads. Preliminary studies of the lithics, bones, molluscs, and plant remains are revealing the changing character of late Pleistocene (Oranian) and early Holocene (Capsian) occupation in the Haua Fteah. Alongside the work in the Haua Fteah, the project continued its assessment of the Quaternary and archaeological sequences of the Cyrenaican coastland and completed a transect survey of surface lithic materials and their landform contexts from the pre-desert across the Gebel Akhdar to the coast, with a new focus on the al-Marj basin. Significant differences are emerging in patterns of Middle Palaeolithic and later hominin occupation and palaeodemography.

Summary
The transpersonal concept of consciousness may be unfamiliar to many psychiatrists and some of its tenets may not receive widespread acceptance, yet it could potentially be applied to psychiatric treatment. William James first coined the term ‘transpersonal’ over one hundred years ago. Meaning ‘beyond the personal’, the transpersonal perspective adds a deeper layer of appreciation to the individual and collective psyche. The term was reintroduced in the 1960s by Abraham Maslow and Stanislav Grof to describe an emerging model of mind that attempts to integrate science with the world's wisdom and spiritual traditions, as well as introducing a more complete model of consciousness than the one derived from traditional science, psychology and psychiatry (Vich, 1988).
Transpersonal experience is all human experience beyond the ego (Scotton, 1996a). If it occurs in a religious context, it will indeed be felt to be a religious epiphany. However, many spiritual and transpersonal experiences occur outside of religion and seem to represent a universal aspect of human consciousness.
The transpersonal field is multidisciplinary, incorporating insights from anthropology, theology, mythology, thanatology and parapsychology. It includes the empirical study of unusual mental states and psychological experiences which do not easily fit traditional psychiatric diagnostic categories.
Of the psychiatrists who have led the transpersonal field over the past hundred years, Carl Jung and Stanislav Grof have made especially important contributions. Both men drew deeply on their personal experience of nonordinary states of consciousness (NOSC), which informed and drove their clinical and theoretical work. Jung's transpersonal perspective and insistence on the importance of spirit was a major factor in his split with Sigmund Freud. Where Freud focused his attention on the personal unconscious and the ego, Jung emphasised the importance of the collective unconscious and the self. The tensions between these two schools of thought continue to this day.
The work of Carl Jung
The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung had a crisis in mid-life, with many unusual experiences that could be considered psychotic. This ‘creative illness’ lasted from 1912 to 1917, during which time he allowed himself to open to the contents of his deep psyche, becoming almost overwhelmed by the visions, dreams and intensity of feeling that followed. Jung felt his consciousness was flooded by forces which he called archetypal but which in previous ages may have been regarded as divine or demonic.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
In 1999 the US Fish and Wildlife Service recommended designating the black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) as warranted for listing as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act, but precluded from such listing by other, higher priority species (US Fish and Wildlife Service 1999). This ‘warranted, but precluded’ finding flamed a management controversy that had been brewing for years and instigated a flurry of activity by agricultural interests, government agencies, conservation non-governmental organizations (NGOs), scientists and others. Stakeholders became polarized between those who want to conserve prairie dogs and those who want to limit them. Although ecologists have noted for decades the huge decline of black-tailed prairie dogs, as recently as 10–15 years ago the status of prairie dogs and their management was largely neglected and therefore not controversial. How did this issue move to the forefront of conservation controversies in this country? In this chapter we use a policy sciences approach (Lasswell and McDougal 1992) to describe and analyse the controversy surrounding prairie dog conservation and management by examining the context of the issue, the key stakeholders, and the processes being used to understand and address the problem. We end with recommendations to improve prospects for black-tailed prairie dog recovery and conservation.
THE CONTEXT OF PRAIRIE DOG CONSERVATION: ORIENTING TO THE ‘PROBLEM’
Fully understanding the challenge of black-tailed prairie dog recovery requires a comprehensive assessment of the context.

Background
A susceptibility locus for schizophrenia in the pseudoautosomal region has been proposed on the basis of a possible excess of sex chromosome aneuploidies among patients with schizophrenia and an increased sex concordance in affected sib pairs. Several studies investigating this hypothesis have produced conflicting evidence.
MethodIn a series of Icelandic and British families, we used lod score and sib pair linkage analyses with markers for the MIC2 and DXYS14 loci on the pseudoautosomal XY region.
ResultsLod and sib pair linkage analysis with these markers produced strongly negative scores. Heterogeneity testing also produced negative results.
ConclusionWe conclude that the present study provides no support for the involvement of either the pseudoautosomal region or the nearby region of the sex chromosomes in the aetiology of schizophrenia.
