Objective:
Print Knowledge in children starts with recognizing and characterizing printed figures; it is a precursor of other skills like letter knowledge and phonological awareness. The goal was to assess print knowledge components and their predictive value in emerging literacy in a sample of Mexican preschoolers.
Participants and Methods:60 children (aged 4 to 6 years old; 50% boys and 50% girls) were tested with an analysis of the visual synthesis and the figure copy from the SNBP-MX and the Rey Complex Figure Test (children’s version).
Results:Children with lower performance in the SNBP-MX cannot use visual information to perform correctly at the Rey Complex Figure. They have problems in the reproduction of the figure, and they do not respect the components of the Print Knowledge: 1) figure building characteristics (size, rotation, orientation) and function (relationship with the background and with other figures).
Conclusions:Early visual perception skills impairments are related to the execution of elements from the Print Knowledge. Therefore, it is expected that children with low performance at visoperception and spatial tasks will have difficulties with early literacy. Since visual information is needed for the copy and learning of writing figures, print knowledge could be categorized as a predictor of the early word and letter recognition skills. Summary
Research is increasingly international. There is a rising awareness that sharing knowledge and perspectives contributes to finding solutions to global challenges. It thus seems logical for researchers involved in teaching to share this international experience with students and offer them an international research-based learning opportunity. In this chapter, we look at undergraduate research projects organized in cooperation with partner universities abroad. We ask what form these collaborations take, what challenges they meet in crosscultural teaching and learning settings, and what we can learn from their experience.

In this study, plates of Inconel 600 superalloy were gas metal arc welded to investigate the effects of the welding process on the creep behavior of the welded samples and compare it to the creep behavior of samples in the as-received condition. Creep tests were performed at two temperatures (600 and 650 °C) with different stress levels. During the welding process, three distinctive microstructural zones are generated, i.e. welded material, heat affected zone, and base metal that may affect the properties of the welded joint. Microstructural, elemental analysis of samples was conducted using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The experimental results show that creep rupture preferentially occurs in the heat-affected zone of the base metal at 4 mm from the fusion line and that the creep behavior of welded samples is different from that of the base metal. These results can be used in the design of structural components to assure their structural integrity.

Stress caused by early weed competition is known to delay the rate of maize development which may result in a decrease in kernel number. Kernel number in maize is correlated negatively with the length of the anthesis-silking interval (ASI). A short ASI has been identified as an easily measured, visual trait which may identify enhanced drought tolerance in maize. Field studies were conducted to test whether: (1) delaying weed control would result in a lengthening of ASI in both a drought tolerant and non-drought tolerant maize hybrid and (2) the presence of drought tolerance genetics comes at a physiological cost, resulting in a greater yield reduction under weedy conditions. In this study, the response of a drought tolerant hybrid with its non-drought tolerant near-isoline was compared to seven different timings of weed control using wheat as a surrogate competitor. Results confirmed that there was no treatment by hybrid interaction at any site–yr for any of the parameters evaluated. Delaying weed control reduced plant height, leaf tip number, shifted and reduced biomass accumulation, kernel number and grain yield and lengthened ASI for both hybrids. Although yield losses occurred with the delay in weed control timing, no yield differences were observed between hybrids suggesting that there was no additional physiological cost associated with the drought tolerant traits. The drought tolerant hybrid, however, was found to have a shorter ASI, lower kernel number and higher kernel wt compared to the non-drought tolerant hybrid. This study confirmed that delaying weed control can influence the length of ASI, which is an important drought tolerant trait. The lengthening of ASI by early weed competition resulted in a rate of yield loss of 0.13 T ha−1 growing degree days (GDD)−1 when averaged across both hybrids and all treatments.

The objective of this study was to compare length of gestation, fetal growth, and birthweight by race/ethnicity and pregravid weight groups in twin pregnancies. Three thousand and thirty-six twin pregnancies of 28 weeks or more gestation were divided by race/ethnicity (White, Black and Hispanic), and pregravid body mass index (BMI) groups (less than 25.0 vs. 25.0 or more). Outcomes were modeled using multiple regression, controlling for confounders, with White non-Hispanic women as the reference group. Hispanic women had the highest average birthweight and the longest gestation, as well as the lowest proportions of low birthweight, very low birthweight, preterm and early preterm births of the 3 race/ethnicity groups. In the multivariate analyses, Hispanic women had significantly longer gestations (by 7.8 days) and faster rates of fetal growth midgestation (20 to 28 weeks, by 17.4 g/week) and late gestation (after 28 weeks, by 5.3 g/week), whereas Black women had significantly slower rates of fetal growth (by 5.7 g/week and by 4.5 g/week, respectively). These findings in twins reflect the racial and ethnic disparities previously shown in singletons, including the Hispanic paradox of longer gestations and higher rates of fetal growth.

Objective
To evaluate the effects on anencephaly risk of the interaction between the maternal profile of folate, vitamin B12 and homocysteine and the 677C→T polymorphism in the gene encoding methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR).
DesignCase–control study paired (1:1) on maternity clinic, date of birth and state of residence. Cases of anencephaly were identified using the Registry of the Mexican Neural Tube Defect Epidemiological Surveillance System. Case and control mothers were selected from the same maternity departments. All mothers completed a structured questionnaire and blood samples were obtained to determine the MTHFR 677C→T polymorphism and biochemical profile.
SettingMexico, Puebla and Guerrero states, Mexico.
SubjectsA total of 151 mothers of cases and controls were enrolled from March 2000 to February 2001. We had complete information on biochemical profile and MTHFR C677T polymorphism for ninety-eight mothers of cases and ninety-one mothers of controls.
ResultsThe adjusted models show that the risk of anencephaly in mothers with 677TT genotype was reduced by 18 % (OR = 0·82; 95 % CI 0·72, 0·94) for each 1 ng/ml increment in serum folate. In terms of tertiles, mothers with 677TT genotype with serum folate levels in the upper tertile (>14·1 ng/ml) had a 95 % lower risk to have a child with anencephaly than mothers with serum folate levels in the first and second tertiles (P trend = 0·012).
ConclusionsOur data agree with the hypothesis of a gene–nutrient interaction between MTHFR 677C→T polymorphism and folate status. We observed a protective effect on anencephaly risk only in mothers with 677TT genotype as serum folate levels increased.

Strontium barium niobate (SrxBa1−xNb2O6 - SBN) with 0.25≤x≤0.75 is a ferroelectric material of interest for diverse optoelectronic applications. Dielectric properties of bulk SBN crystals were comprehensively studied over 30 years ago for a range of compositions and at frequencies up to 30 MHz, but there is little information on properties at higher frequencies. In particular, and up to the best of our knowledge, there are no published results about SBN thin film dielectric properties at high frequencies. For the study reported here, SBN thin films with x = 0.61 were grown on MgO and LaAlO3 substrates by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). Films with good crystallinity and oriented with c-axis normal to the substrate surface were obtained on both types of substrates, while films on MgO had much better texture due to better lattice matching. Interdigital electrode (IDE) capacitors and coupled microstrip phase shifters (CMPS) were fabricated with both types of samples in order to study dielectric response. Capacitance of the IDE capacitors was measured at 1 MHz as a function of temperature and bias voltage, revealing very low losses but poor capacitance tunability, particularly for samples on MgO. Response of the CMPS structures was measured at room temperature and at high frequencies, up to 21 GHz. Insertion losses were measured up to 28 GHz.
