Whitehouse's theory on fusion can explain why suicide terrorists are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their groups, but the following questions on violent extremism remain: (a) Why are victims of suicide terrorism often innocent bystanders? (b) Why do terrorists seem motivated by ancient conflicts? We incorporate findings from the entitativity literature to provide insights into how perceptions of in-groups and out-groups are key processes influencing violent extremism.

Summary
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was the most influential American poet of the nineteenth century. More than a century after Longfellow's death and Whitman's idiosyncratic evaluation, Angus Fletcher compared the two and lamented that as a poet, competing for attention in the modern age of anxiety and irony, Longfellow has fallen from his great height. Longfellow remains one of the very few American poets to be commemorated in Westminster Abbey. A Psalm of Life was included in Longfellow's first book of poetry in 1839, and its generic success accounts for the generic title of his second book of poetry Ballads and Other Poems. The classical literacy that Longfellow's poetry made available at a discount became the subject of his two best-selling narrative poems, Evangeline and The Song of Hiawatha. Longfellow's translation of Dante's Divine Comedy was the product of his collaboration with other members of the famous Dante Club.

The Spanish-language MacArthur–Bates Communicative Development Inventories (S-CDIs) are well-established parent report tools for assessing the language development of Spanish-speaking children under 3 years. Here, we introduce the short-form versions of the S-CDIs (SFI and SFII), offered as alternatives to the long forms for screening purposes or in applications requiring a less-demanding instrument. Norming data (SFI: n = 601; SFII: n = 2,534) from diverse populations in Mexico are described. Developmental trends, gender differences, and socioeconomic status effects are reported that parallel those for the long forms. An additional small-scale study (n = 62) demonstrates strong convergence between responses on the long and the short forms. These results provide evidence that the S-CDI SFs have promise for a range of clinical and research applications.

Summary
The Poetess is one of those nineteenth-century social facts that make twentieth- and twenty-first-century literary historians uncomfortable. Like the horsehair sofa, the Poetess seems to us now a somewhat embarrassing commonplace of nineteenth-century culture we do well to live without. Eve Sedgwick's observation on the fortunes of “sentimentality” goes double for the Poetess:
The strange career of “sentimentality,” from the later eighteenth century when it was a term of high ethical and aesthetic praise, to the twentieth when it can be used to connote, beyond pathetic weakness, an actual principle of evil … is a career that displays few easily articulable consistencies, and those are not … consistencies of subject matter. Rather, they seem to inhere in the nature of the investment of a viewer in a subject matter
Like “sentimentality,” the Poetess is difficult to define except as an occasion for shifting historical definitions of women and of poetry. Yet notions of the nineteenth-century Poetess have not only depended on changing understandings of gender or verse or poetics (histories to which we will return), but have consistently converged on a hermeneutics of suspicion. Is the Poetess just a fancy name for the woman poet? If so, then why not “drop the feminine termination,” as the poet Elizabeth Oakes Smith suggested in the mid nineteenth century? Perhaps it has proven difficult to follow Oakes Smith's sensible suggestion because what is at stake in the idea of the Poetess is overdetermined, in excess of subject or subject matter. The Poetess neither is nor was simply a poet. What you think a Poetess is may depend entirely on your investment in the idea – and certainly depended on very different nineteenth-century investments in the idea. Such a relativist definition of the Poetess as a hologram of readerly desire may fit twenty-first-century postmodern or poststructuralist tastes better than did the lace-collared portrait of the woman poet over the horsehair sofa, but the most interesting thing about the strange career of the Poetess since the eighteenth century is that the figure seems to have had this apparently modern indexical function all along.

This paper describes the early lexical development of a group of 328 normal Spanish-speaking children aged 0;8 to 2;7. First the development and structure of a new parent report instrument, Inventario del Desarollo de Habilidades Communcativas is described. Then five studies carried out with the instrument are presented. In the first study vocabulary development of Spanish-speaking infants and toddlers is compared to that of English-speaking infants and toddlers. The English data were gathered using a comparable parental report, the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories. In the second study the general characteristics of Spanish language acquisition, and the effects of various demographic factors on that process, are examined. Study 3 examines the differential effects of three methods of collecting the data (mail-in, personal interview, and clinic waiting room administration). Studies 4 and 5 document the reliability and validity of the instrument. Results show that the trajectories of development are very similar for Spanish-and English-speaking children in this age range, that children from varying social groups develop similarly, and that mail-in and personal interview administration techniques produce comparable results. Inventories administered in a medical clinic waiting room, on the otherhand, produced lower estimates of toddler vocabulary than the other two models.

My title is meant to pose a real question. It's an old question, but it is worth asking why the anxiety betrayed by the question has been around for so long, and especially why it has spiked in recent years. The question expresses a worry that nobody reads much poetry, or that few people do, or that the right people don't at the right times or in the right ways. So it's a real question to which it's difficult to give a real answer, since the sane response to such anxiety tends to be either “You're right to worry, since nobody reads poetry these days” or “Don't worry; lots of people do. You just haven't noticed.” In her 2006 address as outgoing president of the MLA, Marjorie Perloff gave a little of both responses. “Out in the world beyond the academy, individual poets are warmly celebrated …,” Perloff told her audience (654). Don't worry, in other words. On the other hand, do worry, since that “beyond” means that those gathered—that is, literary critics, members of the MLA, all of us in that room or reading this journal—have not noticed such warm popular celebrations because we are the ones who don't read poetry these days or who don't read it in the right ways. “A specter is haunting the academy, the specter of literature,” Perloff warned us, turning worry into revolutionary foreboding (658). We sat back in our seats, reassured. Oh good, we thought, poetry is about to make a comeback.

THE VICTORIAN POETESS has become as important a figure in the late twentieth century as she was in the late nineteenth — perhaps because she seems now, as then, to have lapsed into the obscurity of literary history. In recent years feminist critics have been interested in reclaiming a tradition of nineteenth-century popular poetesses whose verse circulated broadly on both sides of the Atlantic. A spate of new anthologies, annotated editions, and critical collections (as well as texts now available on-line) has reintroduced supposedly lost women poets into the canon of Victorian poetry. Indeed, this recovery is often predicated on a rhetoric of loss, as if only by losing women poets we can rediscover and read them anew. Thus in recent advertisements for such anthologies, we read that Victorian Women Poets (edited by Angela Leighton and Margaret Reynolds in 1995) “aims to recover the lost map of Victorian women’s poetry,” and British Women Poets of the 19th Century (edited by Margaret Higonnet in 1996) “restores the voices and reputations of these ‘lost’ artists”; likewise, the compendious Nineteenth-Century Women Poets (edited by Isobel Armstrong and Joseph Bristow with Cath Sharrock in 1996) “rediscovers rich and diverse female traditions.”
