IATEFL 2017: Positive psychology in action

As we gear up for this year’s IATEFL conference, today we’re revisiting one of the 2017 IATEFL talks.  Last year, Herbert Puchta gave a talk and workshop session on the topic of positive psychology and how you can apply this in the classroom.

Herbert’s session looked at success in the classroom depending less on materials, techniques and linguistic analysis, and more about what goes on between learners in the classroom.

Firstly, Herbert discusses what positive psychology is.  He then goes on to talk about the research around positive psychology and his suggestions for classroom application.

Part of Herbert’s talk looked at the importance of students’ emotional engagement, sharing that it:

  • Has a significant influence on memory
  • Makes learning more relevant
  • Fosters a sense of ownership

 

The session was also a workshop, meaning that there are activities that you can take part in from the video recording, and you can also hear what others at the session thought.  See Herbert’s full talk below:
