Index | Chapter 16 - The past: used to and would | Possible Answers

Comparing languages

Look back at the verbs marked 4-6 in the text in 16.4.2. Mentally translate these sentences into another language that you know well, or collaborate with a student who can do this for you.

  1. Are similar distinctions made with regard to aspects of past time?
  2. If not, what kinds of distinctions (if any) are made?
  3. What implications does this have for people learning used to and would?

Exploring English

Study two or three pages of a biography or history and look carefully at the verb forms used.

  1. How much use is made of used to and would?
  2. Are there opportunities to use these forms that the writer doesn't take?

Does the writer appear to have a strong preference for either of these forms?

Course materials

Select course materials which teach the use of these forms.

  1. Are they treated together or separately?
  2. At what level(s) are they taught?
  3. How clearly does the material distinguish between the use of the two forms?
  4. Does the material make it clear that use of these forms isn't obligatory?
  5. What kinds of opportunity does the material provide for practice of these forms?
