Index | Chapter 24 - Finite and adverbial clauses | Possible Answers

Exploring English

The answers to these questions will depend on your choice of texts. The aim of the exercise is to sensitise you to how (often) we use conjunctions rather than to make a particular point about our reasons for choosing one (type of) conjunction rather than another.

Course materials

The answers to these questions will depend on your choice of materials. In general, not a lot of attention is paid to this aspect of grammar at lower levels. At higher levels, particularly if the material prioritises writing skills, opportunities are often provided for using subordinating conjunctions in controlled exercises. However, attention is not always paid to precise differences of meaning or to the effect of changing the order of clauses.

If your students want or need to develop their skill in this aspect of constructing sentences, you may need to focus their attention on how sentences are constructed in the texts they read rather than relying only on explicit presentations of this aspect of grammar and exercises in your teaching materials. You may also need to reformulate and discuss alternatives to the way your students construct sentences in written compositions.
